2l block lined to 2.2l
#33
Im doing 4 engines useing this method plus one bigger engine, the liners are meant to be used in a diesel engine but the dimentions were perfect for what i wanted also the top flange gives a good seat for the gasket and insures that the liner will not move, which is the problem on turbo engines, this method worked well on some cossies i done a while back, i have had some liners made to do a 100mm bore in a 2l block but this will leave the alloy a bit thin and may result in over heating problems and could leave the main housing a bit weak in a high power engine but i will try it at some point. I have also got my own cam profiles for both phase 1 and 2 engines and due the the lift ive had to source some srings that will cope without being coil bound with the right seat presure and and presure @ fill lift, otherwise valve guide wear would have been a problem on road going engines to use these ive made valve retainers and spring seats to gain the correct fitted lenght and this will also stop the springs from walking, which can result in broken springs, anyway my point being i have just finished this so i can finish the engines know and the results will be known, i have no dout in the ability of this conversion or i would not of done, i have done many such things before with no problems. The top flange o/d is 106mm and the liner has 3mm wall thickness per side to put this into perspective if you were to line cast iron block with this wall thickness you would break into the water jacket or the oilway with the subaru there is still ample alloy wall thickness.
If this makes no sence im sorry but i have a splitting headache.

Thanks Steve,
Would you say there is enough meat in an open deck block to run these linners?
I had a quick look through a book i have and Nissan make a diesel that has a 100mm bore, but i will have to check if it is a sleaved block or not.
Do you know what diesel engine the sleaves are made for ?

Steve,
when doing an engine like this, using a larger diameter bore, are the standard heads ok to use as they are?
what i mean is, as standard, the majority of the combustion chamber aligns with the bore wall, but if going to a larger bore, this is no longer happening.....is this ok?
(hope you can understand what i mean)
thanks
ian

like MS asked, it would be very interesting to know if this conversion could be done on open deck engines, like the EJ20K .....
Steve do you have custom made metal head gaskets for this piston size ?

Ian heads will be fine.
I do have some custom gaskets and the 2.5 will work but a gasket with a 98mm hole will be better.
This conversion can be done to a open deck block, but will have to be put to the test, i have done it to a block with some very miner closing and it is debatable wether the closing will have had any effect at all but i am using my 14mm stud and nut conversion with a metal shim gasket this in its self can add strength to the block
due to the ragidity of the gasket with even cyl clamping less distortion to the bore will ocour reducing blow by and stiffening the block assembly.
