The weak one of the four in the title is the 206 GTI. Having owned one, and got rid of it after a couple of months, I think (as some of you on here will know ) IMHO it is a pile of ****.

Dave T-S: Just guessing, but you didn't like the 206GTi much then?

Druddle: I dunno how you were driving at 80-85mph, in 4th perhaps? My CTR never drops below 32mpg normally, goes to around 25mpg if it's thrashed and on a long run (Leeds, Cardiff, Nottingham regularly) it's returning 37-41mpg. Not bad from 200bhp is it?

Plus as you well know, the CTR outhandles a 172 anyday (private joke before anyone gets uppity)

hi laurence

long time no speak !

when u coming down here then to give me a ride in yours !!!

still v happy with it i guess then.....

its a bit of an outsider cos she not that happy with how it looks (and the lack of air con is a bit of a downer) but i am presuading her to test drive a 51 Plate Red one. (14k?)

dave : yep 206 is even more of an outsider ! 180 mite be a contender if it was available !

Steve,

You took on one of our guys when he got made redundant so I'm surplus to requirement these days (except to answer his questions!). I don't get down to your neck of the woods much, although I still keep going up to Leeds for another project.

I'm very happy with mine. It's got induction and exhaust now and is putting out 200bhp+ (I can't be bothered with exacts - this is enough!).

With the red one. I would have though that unless this is very low mileage this is quite a lot without A/C. Have a look at the Honda Forum (http://www.r-forum.net). There's a guy on there selling a silver one with A/C, leather, CD changer and fogs for less than that!

Guy called Graham (won't say the surname here, but it begins with an 'H').

He thinks he's going to be transferring down your way soon so make sure you look after him!

£3000 saving on new price.

Yeah, mine's a 51 plate and it's first birthday is next Sunday.

Originally bought standard but since added:

Dash Mount 6 disc autochanger
Tweeter kit
Air-con

(+ obligatory JDM tints, induction and exhaust )

When I got the aircon fitted the dealer did it for 50% off list if that helps.

cheers for that site m8
ok test driven the

cooper s &
clio 172 sport

today.

Cooper S
had about 1½ hours in the mini. both drove it and did bout 50 ish miles in total. combination of twisty b roads and motorway. i found it rather uncomfortable. i could not get the seat to adjust as i liked. goes well, engine / exhaust note are nice. gearchanges were very nice, with an almost quick shift fitted as it was a short throw. handled well though......went around a couple of round-a-bouts just to see how it handled it !! other half really liked it and preferred the driving position to the clio....... This one had quite a few extras....climate control, part leather, heated seats, DSC, 5yr servicing etc as is gonna cost £16,800 !!!! thats standard price as if it was brand new and not an already registered car with 1800 miles. No discount at all off this price despite wotever mileage it ends up with when its taken offline as being a demo car New car will be march/april for delivery....

Clio 172
Took this one out for about an hour. both drove again. i would say this car is quicker than the mini from 0-60 and through the gears. quite noticably quicker. it was also much much more comfortable........i sat in the seat and was immediately comfortable.....like sitting back in my old scooby. standard kit is also very good....part leather, electronic climate control, single cd and xenons etc..... Only thing we both noted was the fact that yoiu seemed to be miles away from the gear lever ! it seems to sit a long way forward ? even for better half whose not as tall as me and hadthe seat closer ??Weird ! This was actually a 2nd hand car..........registered may 2002 with 4.2k miles. priced at £11,999 (£14.6k for a new one). Seemed reasonable to us..... ? dealer also came up with an expected p/ex figure for her car so.....

However she is now confused cos she really wants the mini and does not feel the same about the clio. big price difference though...............is it justified ?

I guess re-sale value down the line should remain much better with the mini, at least for a while yet with delivery times of 3-5 months for a cooper s vs 5 weeks for a clio ?

Guess its also time to confirm insurance for them both. MPG ? well both of them had about 33 mpg on the trip computers so assuming both get driven quite quickly when taken out ! not much in this area ?

So what does she do ? watch this space............. !!

steve
still want her to try a CTR !

Well, Steve, all I can contribute is that I had the Clio Cup on a wet track day yesterday, and it monstered around. It was simply a hoot, fantastically adjustable, and very fast( easily as fast as the elises around the track ), and both me and my wife are quite fond of it now!

Steve,

If it helps later on.

My CTR is averaging 33mpg as well although I've had 41mpg on a run to Leeds and back.

Insurance wise I was paying £509 when it was standard and £544 with the mods.

ok the decision has been taken, the choice made.......

phoned the garage this morning and agreed to buy the 2nd hand Renault Clio Sport 172.

in all honesty she would have liked the cooper s.....preferring the looks, interior styling and driving position of it over the clio (or anything else she's seen) but at the end of the day as a complete package the Clio 172 was better, especially better VFM.

got a basically brand new mint motor for 12k with all the necesssary bits and pieces as standard.

another issue with the mini was the delivery time for a new one AND the availability of an (imho) overpriced ex-demo car during which time her own car is further depreciating.

give it a yr / 18 months though and i reckon she'll be looking to trade the clio for a cooper s !!!

maybe then a cooper s will be a more realistically priced proposition.
