neil_C 'religion has been the cause for more wars and conflict throughout the world than anything else.'

This is one of many similar comments'. And they are true. However, the gun brings death to many people. Do we blame the person pulling the trigger or the gun itself?

Of course, both are true. The object (religion and gun) and the people behind them use them for their own ends. We cannot fight the gun or the religion itself. We have to fight the people behind them.

Don't blame the religion or the gun.

Blame the human.

Some interesting comments from you.

In my view (albeit atheist):

Science does not answer any of lifes really interesting questions. We can barely describe the 'everyday' with science.

Think of all of the terrible things done in the name of science as well as religion.

Science does not encourage us to think about how we behave toward each other in any kind of moral framework.

I think you really let your arguement down when you suggest that (all) religious people are undisciplined thinkers, who are needy and lack direction. There a lot a very deep thinkers who might describe themselves as 'religious' or 'spiritual'.

Please explain what you mean by 'Scientific approaches to life'. I'm interested.

Jason

Religion aside...

What makes us unique in the animal Kingdom is the gap between stimulus and response. In this gap, whether it is 1 second or 1 year, we can choose our response. We don not have to hate someone or swear when your wife bumps the Scooby - this is our chosen response

We as humans have a response - ability. So we all have choices. Sadly, whilst we all live under such different paradigms, and choose our responses accordingly, there will be conflict. This is a certainty.

Sorry to sound so serious, but a serious topic in light of recent events

Scoobyebye.

Just another 2p worth.

The human race is, whether we like it or not, self destructive by nature. The reason to precipitate violence etc is just a justification for the person/s involved.

Religion of any description is a form of brainwashing. They get you early and teach you what you should believe.

I was raised in a very intense Catholic family. I went through all the indoctrinations of baptism, confirmation etc. etc. I was even an Altar Boy

I was attending my uncles ordination (thats the ceremony where you are no longer a brother but a priest) in a cathedral when i was around 11 years old with my family. We had the best seats in the house. Just before he took his final vows my brother who was 4 years old at the time shouted out at the top of his voice "<B>WHO IS GOD IN THIS PLAY???</B>" ROFLMAO.

(he also shouted "water, water, for god's sake give me water!!" we had been watching 'it aint half hot mum' just before. LOL)

Eureka! Out of the mouths of babes comes the truth.

There is no logic to any religion saying it is the real religion. It's incredibly ignorant and arogant for it to make such a statement.

Personally, i feel the concept of a god is complete and utter bollox.

The concept of praying to a god is complete and utter bollox and takes responsibilty away from yourself or from others. If you get what you ask for it's god answering you, if you dont he works in mysterious ways.

I have no time for any religion, they are brainwashing organisations that try to control what you do. I will defend anyone who wishes to live their lives in a religious way though as long as it doesnt affect anyone in a negative way. That just me having respect for other peoples freedom of expresion. Dont try and tell me i am wrong and need saving though because a fat lip sometimes offends.

You dont need to be religious to be compasionate, loving, caring or tolerant. In fact it helps a great deal if you are an athiest as you have no bagage to judge people.

So what happened with my uncle? He became a priest, spent many years in Africa teaching then returned to the UK. Met a nun and ran off to live in sin.... My grandmother wont talk with him because of that. He waited years to get permision from the pope to be freed of his vows and marry the woman he loved. Utter, Utter bollox.....

John, the athiest.......beaten up by a nun for questioning her constantly in religion classes at school. I can be an iritating ba$tard when the answers i get do not conform to logic. LOL

Being religeos has nothing to do with being a good person!

I surpose becoming a Christian at 32 was getting me young

Now I'm brainwashed as well. Maybe that explains why Ive bought so many Subarus since my dunking

And the problem with religion is ME

Please tell me the best bridge to jump off as I am obviously a very disturbed individual.

Seems to me the ones doing the judging on this thread are the atheists

Your post is almost to the word how I would of written a reply to this thread a few years ago. Your upbringing etc to your current views.

Quite uncanny

I am not judging anyone chins. Just my own personal point of view. If you want to follow a religion i will defend that right 100%.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, thats what living in a free society is all about.

Good job i dont live in Afghanistan, i would be killed for my views, as i would have been in Britain a few hundred years ago.

I would have kept my gob shut then of course, i am not stupid.

The irony of it is that if you read the Quran (I have read a bit of it), you'll realize it and the bible have obviously come from the same roots (they even believe Jesus was a prophet). Why Christians and Muslims think each other so wrong, when they obviously have so much in common, I don't know

What's even more ironic is that they all believe in one god. the same god.

Bring back the egyption faroes, they had a god for every occasion, must have been much more fun chosing which one to have a **** up in honour off that week. LOL

IMO, religion == emperors new clothes.

i.e. tell people there is something there and they will each 'see' a different 'style'.

.....a vicar guides their 'flock'....baahhh..

OK

I think we all know this is an incredibly delicate subject.

I'm going to close this now as the thread has served it's purpose and we're not going to be able to settle here what the human race has been fighting over, practically for all time.

All the best
