I cant be bothered wadeing through 14 pages of this when the Title says it all. Any methods of eradication cant harm anyone unless you are Anti-Community Spirited. So 98% of people have nothing to worry about.

Really didnt want to reply to this tread but it keeps hitting the top of the page.
Agree with most of what has been said and most points have been covered,
There are a lot of dealers on here and a lot of youngsters also small bands of people who only talk to each other. But the majority are people who have time on there hands eg :- working-stuck at home ill or otherwise-alone and want someone to know they are there.
I saw on this board recently we are not the samaritans well I am sorry to some you are, It costs nothing to be pleasant to people and you never know. these are the dealers potential customers actual scooby owners. Why else would they be here'
The youngsters AND older individuals who think its clever to be obusive should be told so by the rest of the community to go away
it works after a time believe me.
I was told by the muppets I wasnt interesting enough so I left
So SN let it sort it self out, as you are going commercial you never know who your customers are.

The ONLY way I can see all this working is to just PROMOTE community spirit. Promote is differnt to reward.

1) We can arrange regular regional meets, by appointed regional organisers.

2) Possible a "True Community" forum in which posts of ANY negative / disruptive nature are moderated firmly. This will be posted as a sticky at the top. It will be the only place where this kind of "no-tollerance" approach will be used. HUMOUR will be 100% completely fine, but stomping on people's threads / posting ant-supportive comments on threads that people post in request of support, etc will be deleted immediately. This will be the place that the people who say "it wind me up when people cry about breaking their watch" will be told to simply not read if they don't like it.

3) A harder line will be taken on trolling. Not instant deletion, but it will be monitored more thoroughly and acted on more regularly.

The main thing in it all is to promote more of the community spirit, and I see the regional meets, etc as a good way of doing that.

Thoughts / comments?
Point 1) There are plenty of meets being organised the meeting forums are full of meets, take a look. Wrong time of year at the moment for a big meet though and also a question of locations, which is why the lcoal meets work well.

Point 2) Debate means various points of view what someone see as negative comments is anothers opinion. Will it end up being agreement forum where people darent post anything with an opposing view ? I hope not. I agree posts should be constructive rather than destructive but its a very fine line.

Point 3) Agreed and this is the major problem, nothing to do with community spirit though although if it isnt fixed it has an impact. IMHO its the wind up merchants which are starting flame wars, things get out of hand the threads goes bananas and no one can remember the original question.

There have been some good ideas on this thread but I dont see any progress/change from what we have already or perhaps I have missed something ?.

How about a few new ideas :

1) Lock threads when they are going nowhere ie when its obvious people wont agree, then agree to differ. Before it turns personal and into playground name calling.

2) Look at some of the "lesser" forums as a few a hardly used and maybe be merged and it would be easier to police. I personally think there are too many.

3) How about a voting/poll type threads where people can vote on issues rather than discuss then could be funny and improve community spirit. eg "Should the webmaster run for Prime Minster" .

4) Full and up to date FAQ which is sent to new users explaining how to post pictures, use smilies, use url link. List of scoobynet supporters (banner advertisers and their webpage links). Brief explanation of each forum and what it is about.

5)Terms and conditions which is sent every 3 months say, so people have no excuse for not knowing. If you dont accept the T&C within a time limit with your user name and password then your account is suspended. Stops daft accounts where people just make up a silly temp mail account.

Cheers

ChrisP

simon, how about like on some other forums when you register you have to wait to use the forum until they send you your password i.e 24hours later, this might stop some of the 1 or 2 post wonders joining just to stir up trouble in a thread and then leaving again, i also think that the post count is totally meaningless, what does it acheive by being there

regards

mike

I agree the post count is a waste of time - it encourages people to post one or two word answers to posts all over the place.

Perhaps a closer eye should be kept on the content of some of the threads in the serious part of the site - there seems to be a long delay before "muppetization" of some totally stupid threads occurs.

"Was It You" has also got out of hand with people keeping the threads 'live' for ages by having a private discussion irrelevent to the original post.

I'll admit now that I haven't read every single post in this thread so sorry if I end up going over old ground here but here's my tuppence worth...

In some of the posts I read nearer the beginning of this thread there were comments related to "not stopping freedom of speech" and "people should be able to say what they want to say" etc etc - why? I disagree with this.

Whilst scoobynet "is" a community, it is one which is ultimately centred about Subaru's - Surely the majority of conversation on here should be related (at least loosely) around this? This is what drew me into the forum when I first began to browse a couple of years back - It was nice to be able to come on, ask a question, and get a sensible answer - I'm not saying that random discussions never occurred, but the MAJORITY of the posts were related to this. Now (and unfortunately one of the reasons I actually stopped posting around 8 months ago), the vast majority of threads are, to put it bluntly, cr4p.

Some suggestions (and indeed one's which have been suggested already) could be -

1) A more "involved" and "time consuming" signing up process to prevent people registering simply to post rubbish immediately or to put up a fast reply?

2) Harsher moderating? - can 1, or 2 week bans be introduced for people that overstep the mark? Confining "wayward" topics to the muppet forum, or at least moving to the relevant place?

Sorry this has turned into a bit of a long post but I, for 1 would like to see more of the "old" scoobynet again!!

Kelvin.
