Best Bass Players? IMHO...
Flea - RHCP (has it all, talent, technique and attitude)
Claypool - Primus (but a bit little too "im the man")
Clayton - U2 (Simple but effective)
Karn - Japan (Fretless maestro)
Bootsy Collins - Funk dont get no better
M'Chel N'degeocello - various - Awesome talent!
Bernard Edwards - Chic (produced some of the most famous disco basslines ever!)
Wictor Wooten - Great all rounder
Nathan East - been there, seen it and done it all!
Entwhistle - the bull!
Ray Brown - Jazz Legend
Marcus Miller - awesome funkster
Jaco - Fretless Icon
Larry Graham - inventor of 'the thumb'....
Sting - you try playing his lines and singing so well!
JJ - Stranglers - made overdrive on bass an acceptable feature.
Stu Hamm - just a great player
Mcartney - legendary status basslines copied by so many.
Victor Bailey - another huge funkster!
Im sure there are loads more but these are the guys I take pleasure from listening to and try to emulate in my playing....
Mak the slapper.

Makalu -- good to see JJB in your list, awesome player.
I'd also put in:
- Peter Hook (largely for "Transmission" and "Sunrise")
- Stuart Morrow, the original bassist from New Model Army, he was a one-man orchestra
- Tracey Pew (Birthday Party), listen to King Ink and you'll know what I mean
- Ron Asheton (Stooges), his riff on "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell" is awesome
- Derek Smalls
- Barry Adamson (Magazine & Bad Seeds)
I love the bass, me

Pontificating
Agree, Flea ***** on the dude from Chic, was it Rogers or Edwards, he invented a bass line which they used in every song they did, one hell of a bass line though and very effective.
**** band but fantastic bass player you've all forgotten Mark King, he could slap like no one.
Fretless, Mike Kahn and Pino Palladino
Dave

This is turning into a bit of nostalgia trip - all the bands I listened to growing up!
For the record, 1986 was THE year, Master of Puppets by Metallica comes out and my musical choice was changed forever! (Still the greatest metal album IMHO - and continuing the bass thread - Cliff Burton!!!)
Sorry, just had to share that!
DP.
