392 black 500's were made 56 white ones including 4 ford prototypes and 52 moonstone blue ones were made.
The saff is no looker but neither is a subaru the 4by4 benefits from a 200 block and a far better head than the 500 or 2wd sierra variants. It also costs a lot less than an escort and is essentialy the same mechanicaly has better aerodynamics is lighter and much cheaper to insure.
I can't see why some sooby owners need to make excuses all the time Ford has produced an amazing FWD car probably the best one to date which is a match for most things with a reasonable price tag. Again the game has moved on.
As I said the Rs cosworth range of cars were way ahead of there time and still not really bettered. I wonder why they have such a massive following. Every tuner will tell you that they are mechanically superior to any of the modern stuff. Neither the evo or flat 4 is over engineered the way the YB was. And all this twisties stuff is rubbish. Look at the ten of the best which car set the fastest lap times have alook at the palmer sports site 330bhp escort lapping quicker than a modified porsche GT2 driven by Tiff Needel. There is little point scooby owners getting on there high horses spouting nonsence. It really isn't flattering and only goes to prove my point.

How can one guy be so insecure about the car he drives? Sad isn't it. Do you think if we all 'agreed' that the Saphire Cosworth is the best/fastest/coolest/best handling car ever made, and ever likely to be made, that he would just go away

unless you're a die-hard ford fan, why have a focus RS when you can have a brand new evo vii at 25k, or a used vii at low 20's, or a low mileage used 6 at 18k

my mate drove the RS at anglessy as part of the Top Gear group test thats in the mag at the moemnet... steering pulls badly and kickback all teh time

Ford say the next Cosworth 4X4 will be based on the Focus but probably the coupe version which maybe called "Capri". They may also not go for turbocharging but may use a trick Cosworth V6 instead.

Date wise 2005 to 2006 again maybe!

Jeremy Clarkson was asked a lot of direct questions on the Focus @ topgear filming. His view was great on the track, lethal on the road. Having not driven one myself I can't comment, but Jeremy was a huge Cossie fan, and always rated it over the scooby. He also said the car was a 'huge letdown'.

Topgear is now filmed in a studio at a track, on track (even when damp) the scooby was slower than the Focus. On the road the diff on the RS is a real problem. Most initial reports which praised the RS did so from track driving and smooth german roads - not crappy UK roads.

When they are available I will try an RS out. I won't buy one (why would I want one over my skyline), I find it extremely frustrating that Ford seemed to have launched this car near the end of the current Focus' lifespan, rather than near the start.

I really hope Ford bring out a 4x4 Cosworth model... Preferable as an Evo rival with circa 300bhp, oh and lets see it as a proper model launched with the new shape focus!

Good point Jackal so why a scooby in that case either. Why not buy a Skyline for 20k there is a mint 98 UK R34 Gt1R with 3k on the clock for sale near me from a dealer at the moment ?
What makes me laugh is plonkers like Saxo boy who have never been in a 400 brake car waffling rubbish about his silly little saxo and 200 hp subaru. How can twits like this make an objective comparison they can't. I have driven many scoobs and am thinking long and hard about an evo but not that impressed it was gutless in comparison and the costs involved to get some decent power were astronomical sorry they just don't get near the fun of my saff. Both are good car's though and better than a cosworth out of the box but the Focus looks like a very cool little car

Hi,

I know a few fast ford lads from work. One of them in particular has a 3 door sierra that is pretty much a touring car in disguise. He has all the best bits.............I can't begin to understand what they all do..........but I am assured that only about 1% of the RS owners club realise how special it is. The result is a car that can comfortable do the hundred in 9 secs....that is every time!
He told me that he was following an STI type uk last week on reasonably twisty stuff and could not get near it. Of course it was game over for the Scooby when a straight bit appeared.
Anyway, he informs me that the Japanese cars have their engines made with such precision and fine tolerances, that your smarter than average Ford man would make an **** of it.
True.......cossie engines are remarkable...........but they are crude.

I am going to stop now.....I am losing the plot.

Bye

Bob.

co55ie, the thing with the saff is that they only cost a few grand so i couldn't possibly consider one... everyone would think i'd gone skint or something... and a very old car now by anybody standards. Sure, you can get them to go fast cos the engine was eminently tuneable but there is more to life than just horses.

i agree with what you say jackal. I went for mine as it was cheap and I knew I would seriously mod it. That is what is putting me off an evo spend 20k on the car then 20 k modding it and its only worth 15k 6 months later with the saff i have spent 15k in total including buying the car and could sell it for 8 - 9 k as it stands probably in a year or so time. So to me this is were the wise money went. And you really can't beat the look on the blokes face as you leave his M5 for dust in your old H reg shed it is priceless.
The cossie engine is not crude at all the tuning techniques used on them have come on alot since the early 90's. The way they deliver the power is what makes em so special its like diahorea. Nothing then wallop. I doubt that many of you critics have been in a well sorted big power car it would make you grin from ear to ear something to me that neither the evo or scooby can quite manage, but each to their own. Still at least I have something to play with and find most subaru owners I have played with to be top bod's

Cossie,
I'm not trying to get involved in this arguement about what car is better than the next, but there are times when your arguements seem
to trip themselves up. On the one hand you tell us that subarus are "jap crap" then go on to say that u would buy an evo if it wasnt for the cost of tuning/bhp. When u describe the feeling of the power delivery of your Cosworth you seem to be basically describing my car, early Sti, short gears , big turbo, nothing then.... yeehhaaa. A lot of people have a lot of respect for sierra cosies, I am one of them, but they are not the B-all and end all. It does not mean that I hi-jack every thread to tell everyone on a subaru board how sh1te their Subaru is!!

So enjoy ur motor m8 it sounds a bit of a machine, but pls take a chill pill and let the rest of us enjoy our cars as well. **** they cost enuff to run without someone making owning one a little less enjoyable.

Dougie.

ps whoever wrote that there would be no evo's or subaru's if it wasnt for the cossie.... I think Audi would have something to say about that!!

Dougie - and don't forget the Lancia Delta Intergrale's...

There will be a Focus Cosworth in 2005 based on the new Focus floorpan. Fact.

Cossie - you sometimes write some sh*te on here, but equally if you want cheap tunable '**** out' speed you can't do better than a Saph cossie - and the 3dr's are becoming genuine classics now. Personally I'd go for a MK1 RS2000 for low speed kicks.....

A Cosworth Focus? Dare I hope it's better built and more reliable than the 1.8 Zetec sat on our drive awaiting collection by the leasing company? They've let us out of the deal early, as we've had soooo many problems. Add in the appalling attitude and down right incompetence of the dealers, and we wouldn't dream of having one again.

It's given more problems in 8000 miles than 4 Impreza Turbos/WRX have done in nearly 160,000 combined.

Focus? Absolute crap!!!

I dunno why people have such a problem with this 'us and them' syndrome. I like cars, I respect all cars that look good/fast performance etc etc.....I couldn't give a monkeys (to a certain extent) what badge was on the front....it could be made by Rowntrees for all i care, aslong as I loved it and I bought it cos I wanted to be seen in that kind of car. I am completely not manufacturer bias....I've owned a scoob, I've owned Fords I'd consider buying a Lotus/Porsche/Mitsubishi/love Honda VTEC engines even might consider a VX220 especially that new turbo one. I don't understand why you guys wanna slag each other off so much....its like listening to 8 year olds in a school playground!!

No car is superior to another because at the end of the day it comes down to one person's opinion (YOU the driver!! cos you're the mug paying the hundreds of quid a month to drive your chosen make/model, so enjoy what you have and let the other guy do the same and may be have a bit of respect for the guys that drive something completely different to you because they want to.

Jesus, it ain't that hard surely........? Here endeth the lesson

I bet ST170 owners are kicking themseleves now.

Its funny seeing all Scoob owners get all defensive when somebody brings something out that challenges its superiority over the rest of the second division (premiership being Ferraris/Lambos and second division being Porsches, big BMW's and the like)

Doesent matter !

Enjoy it cos my Golf is far superior to anything in my opinion (well not really, but I have to think like that)

yep there is allways some excuse on the scoob owners side it was a biased review etc etc some of them seriously think that an impreza is the fastest car on the planet and I love winding them up as they are so insecure. Nothing but nothing can beat an Impreza down a dragstrip not even a top fuel dragster and round silverstone a ferarri F1 car wouldn't get near a 200 bhp(snigger)scoob round the twisties. They are hilarious. At least my shed has a bit of go in it and I don't have to get worried about being canned by mondeo's
A happy shopper prodrive pack consisting of a naff exhaust and off the shelf crap ecu turns any scoob into a road legal weapon. I am surprised mary whitehouse hasn't tried to ban these japenese fire spitting all singing all dancing automotive miracles

How far can you mod a fwd car anyway? realistically, without compromising the handling?

Think a FWD with a turbo is a complete waste of time myself, rwd or 4wd is good, but with a fwd, you'll get to about 230bhp, and it'll be very difficult to keep on the roads, or put the power down nicely.

Pointless car, and against the 4wd competitors, it doesnt offer anything near the tuneability, so the whole concept of the cosworth is kinda ignored. Pity the people who spend there money on it.

If whitehouse has kicked the bucket then I am sure she could be resurrected by some new miraculous subaru technology and wreak havoc with imprerza's owners and there depraved behaviour on the public highways of the UK

Integra hasn't that got a funny little honda engine in it with no torque ? Obviously this engine would be very suited to a front wheel drive car from what you say.

Yip, thats right c055ie, small, no torque engines are perfect for fwd cars, and the nature of a na engine is also perfect for fwd, but a bigger, turbo charged engine is most definitely not, as it would be too constrained from a tuning point of view, and wouldnt put the power down nicely.

Oh, and btw, I really have fun driving my small engined fwd car, ive got a big p3nis, and a fit girlfriend, so arent too interested in beating people away from traffic lights, or boasting about bhp, for me, its just about enjoying it, and I get that from the teg, loads of fun, and handles okay too.

Didnt take a pot shot at cossies anyway, simply stated a fact about fwd cars, cossies are generally very powerful and tuneable, so if thats what you like, then cool.
