I was (am) a bit nervous about splitting the calipers and rebolting with spacers as well as tapping out the stub axle! However I have checked with a friend in the trade who says he would be happy with it! So I'll be doing it at the weekend - assuming I can get hold of an M14x2 tap by then!!!

just another thought. My friend (who runs a garage and is a first calls mechanic) was telling me that the Mintex web site has very specific details of how to bed-in Mintex (race) pads. he says the instructions should be followed to the letter to get proper braking performance.

I used to use M1144 pads on nmy Suzuki Swift race car, and they were very good. They used to fade if they were worn down by more than half way, but we replaced them so often that wasnt an issue.

Didnt bed them in in any particular manner tho, maybe they would have been even better if I had! (Of course I was only stopping a 650kg car at the time!)

kwakman,

placed my order with ian on the 2nd October and I'm haven't got my kit yet, but he's cashed the cheque already!!

Like you I've tried emailing Ian but no luck so far. I'll have to try the old fashioned telephoning method now.

Andy.

Aight Scoobs. Im not on my own then.

I didnt place my order til nearly a month after you! Hope I havent got that long again to wait!

Ian did say I'd have them 7-10 days from the 7th of Nov, but I havent heard anything since then.

From what Ive read, Ian usually cashes the cheques straight away, but I think he normally delivers (eventually). I was half expecting to have a bit of a wait but thought I'd live with it cos the deal seems like a bit of a bargain.

Might end up being my Xmas pressie to myself!

tks, brilliant instructions exactly what I needed! My box of 1144's has 4 pad shape rubbery 'mats' in. Are these sposed to be stuck to the back of the pads?

Made contact with Ian a couple of days ago. I'm in the same boat as a few of you guys...order placed for 325mm kit in September and still waiting. However my car has failed the MOT and needs discs!!

He told me that he was just finishing the last of the 308mm kits and then he had two 325mm kits to do, mine being one of them. Said in his own words "shouldn't be long now". Didn't really want to push any further.

I guess this is the consequence of a group buy.

Hi Fellaz

Just a word from the original groupbuy starter!! My 335mm kit fitted suceesfully to my P! look and stop awesome. Calipers hasd to be split but a non franchise mechanic did it 4 me so im non techy!! Bit of a squeal from the front but i spent maybe too much time bedding in, standing on them soon clears the decks!!
Heading to Bedford Aerodrome this Weekend with SIDC so will see how they cope with BIG use (say hello if you're there !). Sorry to hear mixed reports and worries on the brakes but persevere, they are an awesome bargain over standard brakes and worth the wait............

Regards

Another tip for the 308 kits. As Jay had pointed out(i had the same problem) you may need a washer but better yet is first to measure the ring spacers as mine weren't uniform, some were 11.4mm and others were 11.9mm in thickness. Use various washers to find the exact offset that will center the disks (bolt them tight beforehand) within the caliper's groove, then measure the washer thickness and lathe down (best!) the spacer to the thickness of the washer or use the washer alone but make sure that a high quality item is selected (like steel washers found on engine blocks)Mine worked out at 10.8mm spacer thickness but i also had to remove some material from the adaptor plate as it was fouling the housing (maybe forester spesific). And after everything was fitted my 16"'s would hit the caliper (also Forester specific) and that gave an excuse to buy the RL-7's i've always wanted. A bit expensive mod but it looks as well it feels good ! More info on performance will follow.

Regards,

George

Going to the garage where I got the kit fitted to get them to look at the knocking pads (I hope). Anyone got any bright ideas as to how best to solve the problem? I am also guessing that some copperslip might help my squeling brakes at low braking pressure?

Try bending the spring in the back of the calliper (assuming you use the Subaru 4 pot). This will put more force onto the pads and stop them rattling as much.

They aren't subaru calipers, they are the godspeed 4 pots (which I think I'm right in saying are from a jag?).

Will get em to refit pads and to make sure there is no 'cr*p' on there. But still confuses me as to why it makes the noise only when on full left lock. What would be moving differently on full left as supposed to normal or full right? Could it be the pad catching something on the inside?

Hugh, did you check the gap between the caliper and the disk (looking from the top), mine before the mod, was very close & was barely touching on the left side of the caliper. This may be the cause in your case, as the forces during left cornering could push the disk in slight contact whereas turning right move it further apart so no noises are induced. I get no squeal in mine and i have the same kit as yours. Just my thoughts ofcourse i'm no trained mechanic.

George

Problem solved (after a few miles travelling about). The bolt used to mount on the hub in the kit had been far too short (dunno why, because Ian knew it was a Subaru), so the guy that did the work had had to cut some longer bolts done to the right length. He was about a turn out in his measurements, so it was just catching slightly when the disc was flexing. Didn't happen on the other side because a delivery of bolts had come in the day the work was done and he used some that were of the right length from that.

All working fine now

fitted my kit today. All went well. The tapping of the holes was a bit scary but turned out ok. Now just need to get some miles done to bed them in.

Is anyone else still waiting for their kit and struggling to get through to Ian on the phone?

Hopefully with him being back from holiday tomorrow he'll pick up the emails or this thread and put my waiting to an end.

I got my 325mm kit! And they look monsterous! I can feel an increase in unsprung weight coming on, but if they stop as good as they look, its gonna feel like a crash when I stand on em.

Just gotta fit em.........

Quick Q for those that have done it:

When fitting the braided hoses, do the slightly longer ones go to the front, and do the crush washers fit either side of the banjo?

Cheers

Ian,

I think youve left some spacers out of my 325 mm kit as the caliper adaptor plate is a long way off the hub bracket (half an inch or so) with the disc secured and the caliper centred on it.

It looks like the securing bolt wont be long enough if the spacer was in place, so four of those of the correct length would also be appreciated.

As my car is up on jacks now and I dont really want to have to put the old brakes back on and do the job twice, can you get some over to me ASAP?

Cheers

Andy.

Thanks for getting back to me Ian.

The bolt lengths are 48mm with head, the threaded length is 40mm. They deffo wont be long enough with the spacer on board.

Cheers

Ah well, we tried, I guess I'll have to do it again come Monday!
