Gaz, going off the progress to date, I can't see it being in the NEAR future My work rate isn't exactly quick at the best of times, and what with the missus reckoning I should be getting the house sorted, not pratting about with that 'piece of junk' in the garden. I can't see it being done this year

Just got my Mk4 wheel flanges back from the machine shop at work, I've had them turned down to fit into Mk1 hubs & wheel bearings.

Now I've got 5 stud 100mm PCD hubs all round (MkII GTi rear brakes with Mk4 discs), and a nice set of 16x7 six spoke Speedlines that used to be on the scoob

The shell is going for it's respray into Giallofly Yellow next week, so it might all just come together this year. Fingers crossed

I see youve gone for the Dellorto's then?, any particular reason?, i had brand new Webber 45's on mine, i got them for £60 for the pair inc vat!! when they were selling for £220+vat each at most places.
The reason i ask about the Dellorto's is that although they may be more fine tuneable (some say too fine tunable in that you dont need to go up in such fine adjustments) the parts availability is not nearly as good as Webber which are available anywhere!!
Also the accelerator pump mechanism is exposed whereas in the Webber its enclosed.
Either way they get the job done though!!

Pete.

I went for dell'orto's on mine, because I found them on the side of an Alfa Sprint Twin Cam motor in my local scrap yard, and paid £15 for the pair There is bu66er all left of them now though, because I cut them in half to use as throttle bodies, now that I'm running fully mapped injection & ignition

Question

crispduk..just wondering, what ECU are you using??as i need one for my mk2 16v turbo after my k-star stopped working.

All i need it to do is control 4 extra electronic injectors i have fitted(still using k-jet) and adjust the ignition on full boost.

Any recommendations..Cheers

After much investigation & research I went for an Emerald unit, mainly because of the features they ran in CCC magazine whilst developing the unit. It was originally developed on a MkI 1.8 8V running a posh head, and evolved to run the same engine with a G60 charger, and 150bhp worth of Nitrous. All controlled & modulated from the ECU. The main guy's name is Dave Walker, the technical guy is called Karl. I don't have the contact numbers to hand but will post them from work tommorrow.
The other main alternative I looked at was the MBE system, through SBDevelopments, as I had first hand experience of that system on a GpN Astra 16V It was awesomely quick & responsive, but had a nasty habit of setting you on fire if you stood to close to the exhaust when it was cold
I went for the Emerald over the MBE in the end purely on the grounds of cost, there is a fair bit more DIY wiring/loom building and fitting involved with the Emerald, but i do believe they will do the install and set-up for you if you require.

I can't give a final judgement on it yet though, as the car is a while off finished.

P.S. I can't believe I made the last post on a page, & didn't notice a corner in the offing, I 'll be losing my muppet status at this rate

I run MBE with SBDs 225 kit on my astra - good kit

do any of you golf guys know of a very sleeper style brown mk1 - only bonnet clips and wheels to give the game away - I had a play with said car on the way back from santa pod on sun, only to find out he was apparently running 12s qtrs! - throttle bodies by the sounds of it, same as me - he must've been holding back as my car has a duff crank sensor at the mo so I can only rev to 6.5k (still did 14.9 qtr though, heh )

Gaz love the golf. Cracking colour as well.

There is a VW audi driver track day at Castle Combe on the 12th Oct if you fancy it.

GP - I think I know the one your on about. 2 Litre 16v block on throttle bodies. Very very light weight, runs qtr in 13.7 secs.

13.7 would be more like it - that's what mine would be nearly capable of if I had full power range - and I opened up a gap in the mid range (where I do at least have power)

similar spec car to mine ran 13.89 on Sun

what made me smile though is he had his little boy fast asleep on the passenger seat all this time.. who didn't appear to even stir when the guy chased me up the DC - must be used to dad 'using' the car well

Cripsy starter - re: emerald ECUs - if you haven't already, get Dave walkers engine management book (haynes) - gives a good head start on the M3D etc, seems a lot more user friendly than MBEs software, too.

Question

Can any of you VW boys point me in the right direction for sorting out basic suspension for an old Mk1. My wife's car, she loves it and won't let me sell/give it away even though I offered to get her a TT, and the bloody thing keeps flying through MOT's.

1986 4 speed! 1.4CL. 70k miles. suspension feels like it's not actually connected to the car anymore and is only being held there by the weight of the car

Don't want race suspension as she just pootles about in the thing, but is there someone in the London area who you would recommend to rebuild suspension, bushes etc..

Cheers

Cheers crispduk..I spoke to dave last week about his Ecu but somebody else recommended i should try the DTA(www.dtafast.co.uk) ecu(550+vat).What i like about the Dta one it has traction/launch control built in,which is a brilliant idea for my "wheelspin fantastic" turboed golf.

I was all for the Emerald one but i found out they are relocating to Norfolk at christmas and would you believe i only live "ONE" mile from their Herne Hill base. BUGGER!!!.It would of been perfect and easy to see Dave if i needed any problems sorted.

So i'll have a think and see which IS best for its money.

Fatboy.. the best and cheapest place to buy suspension parts is GSF(german swedish and french car parts) or EURO car parts both of them have stores everywhere.

www.eurocarparts.com
GSF tel.0208917 3801

I aint got a foggiest the best place to go to have them fitted,im DIY guy so i dont mind getting my hands dirty. If you are desperate your could try Kwikfit or Halfords.

Fatboy, Get some standard spec springs & dampers for a MkII GTi 16V, they will transform the car, as planky says, get them from GSF, for less than half the VAG price.

GD, Thanks for the tip, I actually already have the book, as you say it is very informative.

planky, The traction control side wasn't an issue with me as I'm only going to be running naturally apirated 1.6 at about 140bhp, and I've got a quaife torque biasing diff which should cope.

standard spec 16v suspension, are you mental, if you like the boat like feeling maybe, go for a set of decent aftermarket suspension, it doesnt have to be coilovers, a set of bilstein lowered 40mm will set you back about £300 - the difference is amazing, its like a different car!!!
believe me - ive had 3 of em....

Gaz, I have no intention of arguing with you, that would generally be my opinion. BUT, FB said it was his wifes car, and if Mrs FB is anything like my better(?) half, she won't like a hard(ish) riding car. Besides, again if Mrs FB's car is anything like Mrs Duk's, it ain't worth wasting decent gear on

P.S. I've never been on track before either, but, there is always a first time, and I'm actually quite looking forward to it. I just have to get off here and get the damned car finished

Most of my motorsport career (such as it is) has been in the form of sitting in passenger seats telling muppet rally drivers where & what the next corner will be
This is why racing drivers must be better than rally drivers, racing drivers come equipped with a sense of direction

Mrs FB likes a hard ride, but when it comes to cars.....

I don't think she has ever got above 55mph in this shed, and has a mental block about motorways - she won't go on them ever since spinning her student Metro in the fast lane of the M1 during rush hour (No i don't know how you could do that either). As a result, anything that just removes all the awful slop from the current 16 year old suspension will be fine. I suspect she'll even complain about Gti suspension being too hard - she hates the P1 for that reason, and for that fact that it's too loud, too leery, too fast etc, etc, .

Get on track and spank him, if you're prepared to trust your life to rally drivers then there's nothing to scare you on a track.

Cheers

The key to being a good co-driver I think, is being blessed with a limited imagination. When you are sat in a 20 year old MkII Escort, packing a 2.4 aspirated Cossie motor and six speed 'box, doing 120+mph down a 7' wide dirt track, with a cliff wall on the drivers side and a 100' drop on yours, it doesn't take much to imagine the size of the accident if you go off

These days the only mad ****** I sit in a car with is me

I know what you're talking about as I've done the same stuff myself in Mini's, Mk1 and Mk 2 Escorts, except I made sure that I was in the other seat (and it was 20 years ago so no posh 6 speed gearboxes, but against that the road conditions were the same, the tyres were worse, and my nice little BDA pushed me along at very similar speeds)

FB
To this day nothing sounds better going through a forest than well wrung out BDA, although I bet they are a damned sight more hassle to keep fettled than the Cossie or Astra motors.
They probably didn't cost London house prices to get built 20 years ago either.
