MY03 Impreza

This new model looks so much better than the current bug-eyed version.
Its no wonder they have rushed it out (the new facelift) because dealers can't give away the present shape. Hence 0% finance, £2000 off etc....

I always remember the autocar spy pictures/mockups etc that were doing the rounds 2 years ago. Then I remembered that Steve Breen had posted this which was supposedly sketched by someone on a FHI factory tour. It was greeted with great skeptasim at the time, but it was pretty darn close.
I strongly suspect the MY03 will look nothing like the spy pictures.

I've gotta say, i hope that is just a speculative design, because it looks horendous! Upon saying that, i don't think that even Subaru would be daft enough to release a car that awful looking into the market.

Well I prefer it to the bugeye, but I suspect it won't look like that in the end... Could be wrong though, but the piccies just look like photoshopped ones, I can't see subaru making some of the changes.

Funny, i'm trying to flog my Y reg GTi 1.8T and get a brand new WRX and TODAY the Subaru dealer called me up (interesting timing) being a bit pushy and asking me if i'd sold my golf yet, etc..so i think that these changes ARE for real and very soon! I'm really not sure about the front new lights - looks too weak. I think they should put a parrot on the roof and have it squawk whilst you drive the new shape. That would do it for me.

well I think it is a massive improvement on the current model which has looked unfinished from the start. I mean..... how bad is it that you have to go out and spend £000's on a new car before you can bear the sight of it every day:
I hope this is what the new lights look like.... least it looks less like a toyota corolla or a hyundai!... but then you bug eyed wonders can always go buy one of them cant u

I find it hilarious that comments like
"If the MY01 had looked like this, I would have bought one instead of a second hand MY99!" are made.
Seriously, can you be put off simply by a pair of headlamps??
Let's face it, both the old and current models are pretty dull/ugly looking cars that have never been bought for their looks, so to put the design of an individual component above the driving experience surely means you should be after a different car altogether, something like a TT?

I also find those comment amusing and a little depressing as well.

Im going to have to disagree BT52b and MATTeL, surely buying a new car is about the complete package, the drive, the look etc...
To most people £20k is a hell of a lot of money and takes some saving and sacrificies and surely most people would only buy a car if they liked the look of it regardless of how it drives.
I think only minted people can spend £20k on a car, hate the look of it and say hey its a good drive??????? Personally I couldnt swap my MY00 for the new age one as I just didnt think it looked as aggressive as the older one, maybe the new one will sway me but I would have to like it even if when it comes out its the best drive on earth.

I wouldnt spend 20k on a car I didnt like the look of, regardless of how well it drove!
As has been said, when I buy a car its an entire package. I would have the older shape over the bug eyed one any day of the week, it isnt just the headlights, the newer one looks worse from every angle IMHO, horrible nasty spoiler on the back that looks not to unlike an ironing board, nasty rear light clusters, and those bug headlights! - not a fan at all. I just wouldnt own a car I didnt like the look of, doesnt make me part of the TT brigade at all, I just couldnt drive a car I though was fugly!
No offence intended anyone, each to thier own and all that.

I was commenting on the "I would have bought one but the lights put me off" comments. When inside the car you couldn't see them, but you could feel the handling improvements and see the interior improvements.
It was three months before I got around to changing the lights. I was never that bothered by the original lights either.
Of course if we all liked the same things then life would be really dull and we would all be driving 1.6 Mondeos!

BT52b,
I think you've rather missed the point of the type of post you're ridiculing. Although you could argue that I'm biased.
These comments are not 'I didn't like the look of the WRX, so I bought a ford'. They are simply a matter of personal taste/choice between two models of the same car.
When it came time to replace my '98, I put a deposit on a WRX. However, I was fortunate enough to gain access to genuine pix of the WRX (not the misleading 'leaked' pix of the red one in Autocar) and felt that I simply couldn't live with the look of the 'bugeye'. As a result, I opted for a P1 which I'm very happy with.
Currently, the only version I would replace it with is the STi7, but not that willingly, and the only WRXs I've seen that look anything like as good have had a great deal of money spent on them, which I simply don't want to do. If the '03 turns out to be something along the lines of the Autoexpress impressions, then I would certainly consider it.
I think any of us would be lying if we claimed we'd drive a really ugly car, no matter how good it was to drive.

Wow - dr evil, that is the best looking scoob i've seen. But honestly, whilst £20k is a lot to some, you can't have it ALL at this price. I'm buying a new WRX because of the drive, the handling and the performance - i'm adding morettes because they look infinately better than the bugeyes but don't get me wrong. If i had more cash i'd buy a car that is designed from heritage like a porsche carerra 4 or Mercedes SL (new one). But at £20k few cars can even touch the new WRX in my opinion. And the other incredible thing is the love people have for these cars, this site is an incredible example of the following. I haven't seen sites like this for audi, or other makes.

I admit that I would be disapointed with my WRX if the new one looks like DrEvil's pic.
But then again I still like the look of my car, unless I view it from directly in front. Would like to get STi front lights or at least change the orange bulbs in the front.
