Would not touch a MY01. Very happy with my Jap WRX.
HOWEVER! I would not buy another Scoob (current thought) - my choice would be an EVO VI.

Mossman has a point. I've been thinking about 'the dark side', ie; Lancer Evo, and its tempting, very tempting. If the Evo Wagon is any good then it might tempt me away from a scooby wagon, but to be honest I think I'll stick with a scooby.

quote:
Dave I would suggest that your statistic is a bit misleading because I doubt all of old Impreza owners would have got another whatever the new one had looked like. Question is, how many of those people have actively been put-off getting another because they don't like the new one.

But then you have to ask how many new model owners would never have bought the old one. More than none I can assure you.[/B]

agreed this is hardly a scientific study and im sure that the new model will attract as many new owners to Suburu as there will be leaving the marque.Me for one!!

I was just interested to se what the opinion was at the mo.

good question.

the 01's not for me. i'm hocking the MY97 for a prodrive forester turbo-s WR next summer.

205bhp, cheaper than a UK300, better-equipped than an 01, stupidly large sun-roof, better looking than an 01, more comfortable than an 01 - plus stonking performance in a family SUV that makes the freelander V6 look lame.

could not have the 01, too ugly for me.
I love the Sti for the raw edge but even if the 01 had that power it could not persuade me.

Ive had enough of these "ugly" comments. Look at the extremely nice DBM MY01 and compare to the very OLD and plain looking cars around it.......

How can anyone call that ugly?????? It looks LOADS better!!!

Collected my a new one (import) in February. Liked it, did not love it. Decided to sell it. Advertised it for sale at bargain price in April. Finally sold it in May after weeks of advertising and only one single phone call. No-one wanted the poor ugly overweight child. Lost money. Learned a lesson.

Would I buy another MY2001? No. Would I buy another MY99/2000? Yes.

I reiterate my point. You want looks to be a factor in the choice of car then don't drive a old or new scoobs. Other cars look better. Surely the attraction is the drive more than the looks?????

Please correct me if I am wrong.

PS Jza Love the pic! I (flame suit on!) prefer the standard lights but the wheels on the nearside are kicking and the boot spoiler is smokin'. Who's car is that?

The old Scoob had blah / so-so looks.. and the performance compensated for that .. But the MY01 us just plain fugly, almost offensive looking.. and people have a problem parting with huge sums of cash for that to be sat on their drive. Especially when there's an equally capable but less hideous Evo7 to be had.

David

Fair point and i suppose it is personal taste. I prefer the new model. I looked at both, decided for another couple of quid a month the whole package was better overall in the WRX.

Looks came in about five on my list of factors. If it rates higher in others and the WRX is not good enough then so be it - buy something else. But if handling, useable performance, residuals and reputation are above looks then surely the WRX at least competes if not beats the old scoobs.

The MY01 has fugly bug eyes as we all know, but apart from that I think the looks are OK, and a lot more modern than the old shape.
It doesnt take much improvement to make the car look good, and most of the MY01 owners on here seem happy enough.
At the end of the day they are both great performance cars, but with different charactaristics and values.
Personally, I like it and have ordered a UK300 which IMHO looks great.

There is a very interesting debate going on here....its almost identical to the one over on the Lotus Elise BBS about the old vs new models!! I personally think the WRX is a great car.....I prefer its drive over the old one and I love the interior! At the end of the day...buy what you want, drive what you want and respect that different people are going to have dfferent tastes! It makes the world less boring!!

while it may be perfectly true that how ugly the car is cimpared to how it drives is insignififcant,it is also true that ugly cars can suffer higher depreciation because not all cars are bought for driving ability. In fact, probbly only a few are.

And if the diehards in here think its pigugly then i suspect joey public are gonna puke on site.Just my 2ps,and im 95% sure Im gonna buy one!!

Ive changed to the new shape, and one of my guys in the office who wouldnt consider an old shape has just bought one as well. Plus one of my other guys is looking seriously. Both prefer the looks of the new car.

...and it costs more to insure

I think its some kind of inverse vanity tax going straight into Mr Browns coffers.

Without a significant overhaul its going to be option 3 for me as well.

Classic model was purposeful, and different for its time

New model, just doesnt cut it. Ok maybe it does handle better, but that counts for diddly to me as I cannot exceed the limits of my car anywhere that Ive driven it, without way exceeding the current speed limits.

Must say I really like the EVO7, maybe its not as extreme as the 6, but I dont think I could put up with a 6 as it looks like it was designed by a star wars special FX guy (IMHO)

Well, it is in the eye of the beholder. I think the new one is ugly, and I would not buy it, but not because of that, but because it is actually a very different car from the original impreza turbo. Having one from 1995/6, with all the lag and problems that subaru have engineered out in successive facelifts and alterations to the turbo and plumbing to it, I can say that I think the original was the best and the most fun. The newer variants may have better seats and wheels and I have the later ones because I think that is right, but white dials and more even spread of torque does nothing for me but to turn the car into another albeit quick smooth eurobox with attitude.
The original although flawed in many ways is an iconoclastic car. As with so many like it, (Audi Quattro, M3 etc) successive improvements have not kept the appeal of the original.

Subaru have acheived what they did with the first model, a car that stands out from anything else on the road... The number of people that have to view the badge at the back to establish what model it is, in good way that is.

I heard several passers by comment on how purposeful the saloon looks and also how fantastic the WR Blue is. You guys need to see one in the flesh with one of the two available headlight conversions... And as for performance, yeah, it is slightly refined over the old, and in some respect it does take the kick out of it, but on the other hand it makes for a smooth (ish) power delivery that once you get used to how to get the most out of it, its brilliant fun!

Handling wise it leaps n bounds a head of the older versions, which can only be a good sign for the STi7s

Mine should have the morette fitted in about 3 hrs time, and will be at Bagshot meet tonight if anyone wants to see it.

Cheers, Alex

Talking

After seeing the T-S's cars, I think my answer to the original question is a definite YES!

I thought the new shape looked awful when I first saw it. It still does with the old lights/ride height/wheel size. But recently I've seen more and more with morettes and have softened to the shape. What Dave and Carolyn have done to their cars though has finally tipped off the fence. My only dilema now is which set of alloys and which colour...

Cool

ask yourself this question then...

imagine the pre my01 shape was still the current one. now imagine ford/ hyundai/ mitsubishi announced a boxer engined turbocharged car. and it looked EXACTLY like the my01. would you sell your scooby to buy one?
hmmmm....thought so

no matter what anyone says, i have hardly seen ANY on the road. they are going cheap in supermarkets. even my customers , when they see my pre my01 parked outside, say how much they dislike the look of the new one.
as someone said, apparently the scorpio was decent enough car, and well specced, but no one bought it coz of the looks.
is the old shape handsome? personally i think so, it has a mean purposeful look to it, it kinda looks 'right'.
the new one looks comical IMHO. i think the headlight conversion improves things, but if this whole design of the car is the best subaru could come up with, then dont ask me to spend 20k plus on it.
all the above is MHO, and i aint out to upset or offend anyone. if u love your bugeye, then at least you love a car, instead of driving a bloody skoda or summat ( no offence to skoda owners )

finally, no matter how quick or good a car is, if you dont like the looks, you wont buy one, otherwise we'd all be driving evo6's
flame suit on and running like mad.

p.s.
chins, you say someone else is getting one at your office, is he buying yours off you?

D BROWN the point I was making is that they will be driving them, not that the shape will change, anyway that DB4 GT zagato you built in the sixties was bugged, and is regarded as won of the prettiest cars ever. PS as for those tractors you loose some credit in the style stakes there

Unhappy

I've got a MY99 with PPP and I love it to bits.
It looks right in all the places, but in a couple of years time when I change the car I really d'ont Know what to go for?
Really like the new BMW Coupe's or may an Audi, really want to stay 4X4????????
Wish I could stay with Subaru, honestly Guys there are not that many scoobies around, 1 a day if I'm lucky compared with all other cars.
That's one of the reasons that makes the scoob special.
I still thinks the new model is ugly, ok the interior is improved so it should be .Just have to wait for the new STI to see if its worth getting.
You know what we should do.....
get a petition to Subaru Japan and say how much we d'ont like the look of it, hence losing sales and cr@p like that.
Hopefully they will get a new model in 4 years time rather than 8 years.
Anyway by that time I'll be an old fart driving a Vectra at 50mph on the motorway!!

Quick Reply: will you gladly swap to the new model?
