use your left foot on the brake and your right foot on the gas.

Hmm..... let me guess, you must be thinking i'm a idiot?

Thanks pat, this simple line is very informative and un-offensive.

Apologies if that came across wrongly...

I was just trying to simplify my response based on your comments about your grasp of the english language.

I did not mean offence.

The LFB trick came into use this afternoon on my way home from visiting relatives.

I came out of a 30mph limit behind a Isuzu Trooper which was chucking out more smoke than George Burns with a Havana. I overtook him after the 30mph limit on a straight and continued on my way, about 2 miles later in 50mph traffic it caught up with me and the 3 occupants in it who must of had the family braincell for the day started to give me the V sign. Also implying that I needed some hand relief
I ignored this and then they thought that at 50 mph with their bull bars on it would be fun to lurch forward towards the rear of my car to try and frighten me. There must have been between 1 - 2 feet between us at some stage, I slowed a touch so the traffic ahead could pull away. Then I started to accelerate and as I did so they stuck with me like glue so I decided it was time I tricked them and I dabbed the Left Foot on the brake to flash the brake lights and at the same time I planted my right foot to the floor and left the hill billies for dust. They jumped on the brakes as soon as the brake lights came on and I think were shocked when I p155ed off into the distance.

Why is there so many w@nk3rs out there that are purely jealous and try and think they can make you race them. Thankfully the scoobys speed can get you out of a situation like that quickly as you hear of these car hijacks etc..

O.M.

Cool

Surely if God didn't intend drivers to LFB, God wouldn't have let man invent front wheel drive?

I found that I needed to drive a little slower, then turn the wheel sharply and open the throttle to get the car sideways. Once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes second nature.

On my standard Impreza, if you open the throttle first, it just drives off in a straight line.

I practice (& need!) lfb'ing in GPL - took a long time to get right

When at the nurburgring (for real) recently I also felt it's need on fast trailing throttle type corners - the car naturally understeers and a touch of brake would hopefully tuck the nose in a bit.

But my size 12 feet are a bit unwieldy for me to be confident with this when the pedals seem so far to the right. Will pedal extensions help?

A bit OT - but on the same trip I also drove a skidpan for drift traing.....the Scoob would *only* understeer (in my unskilled hands )! I resorted to the handbrake in the end (on advice from instructor) - but even then it was necessary to let the car get *way* sideways before balancing with the throttle. I should mention this was only on the super-slippery 'inner-ring', on the normal wet-tarmac outer ring things were *fun* and could be balanced nicely

Cheers

Not intimating in any way that I'm a good driver or I know what I'm on about , but I've found nicking my family's automatic Scorpio has been very handy for learning (slightly! ) LFB'ing.

The lack of occupation for your left foot easliy lends to getting used to the basic need for good control (while using LFB for faster purposes) - the process of getting used to how much weight to give to a completely different type of pedal.

Just don't act like me and try full throttle bends using your left foot to brake in a 1.5 tonne boat of a Scorpio

Two minor points:
- Automatics (including rental karts!) are two very good ways to train your left foot.(sorry to repeat this).

- There's a real world use for LFB which hasn't cropped up yet.(Well, _I_ use it...)
If you're on one of those windy B-roads where visibility/hazards are the main modifier of speed, and you find yourself in (say) 3rd gear for miles, using LFB helps you react to stuff much quicker. You can go straight to throttle as soon as you get a clear look round a corner, or get the anchors down the moment a hazard appears. The only drawback is that if you DO need to stop suddenly you risk screeching to a halt with a stalled engine But clearly that's better than hitting something solid cos you didn't react quickly enough.

My main problem with LFB on track is HTH do you combine it with hell'n'toe?!? Obviously it's possible, but a load of trouble waiting to happen...

MathewC,

Practice?

I heal-and-toe all the time, it's just natural and I can't remember driving any other way, except for automatics. I don't recall having any problem mixing H+T and LFB, I started to LFB well after I was H+Ting everywhere and LFB just kind of slotted in.

Are you sure you are happy with the H+T technique? You should really make sure you are completely comfortable with H+Ting before you try combining it with LFB... otherwise you could end up living in interesting times!

Have you read Simons articles on these subjects?

Moray
