pressue on mine at cold was about 7 bar. regardless of rpm, but I never took it above 3k rpm until oil pressure dropped to 2 bar at idle which it did when warm.
interestingly when I changed from redline to motul oil pressure at idle when warm rose from 2 to 2.5 bar.

So could the over run be where the damage is being done?
My car is a dealer maintained (not from now on) standard car and has been running the semi-synthetic Helix oil and has covered over 105,000miles.. I do warm it up and down and give it reasonable respect.. but I find it difficult to believe that a car being treated like it is indestructable and lets go after not many miles is being treated worse than mine having done 3times more miles? so there must be something particular to how that car was driven at the time it let go? perhaps.. what do I know.......

Do you think I should switch to Fully Synthetic say Mobile 1 15/50 oil when I do the next change myself? or will the engine be too used to having semi-synthetic in? I have little knowledge of the in-depth details of the oil etc..

Fuuny that JGM - I noticed that more than any other car I have driven, my scooby spent a lot of time on overrun. That was until it went bang this week. I don't know what's gone wrong with it yet, but prolly the big end bearing's shot. This was after less then a 1000 miles since last service with mobil 1 15w stuff. Car was unmodified apart from decat exhaust and aps induction kit. It had not been revved past 6000 'cos I was waiting to get it remapped..

There is something extremely odd here as I can agree with each one of your comments:-
1. Milton Keynes [tick]
2. Just serviced [200miles]
3. Filled with Mobil 15/50 Motorsport [yup]
4. No significant mods [backbox only]
5. Big end went - approx cost £3000k [they fitted a new engine]
Based on your weirdly similar set of circumstances, I will go with my dealer's oil theory above and save £35 by not buying Mobil

Popped down scooby dealer for oil&filter
posed question: how manys cars have you had to fix under warrenty with main or big end failure over say last couple of years?

Q2, any pobs with bottom end?
Ans2, only no.4 piston a bout a year ago, material to soft, s-shaped the bore.
You see the oil flow for the bottom end, results in no.4 being last in the chain (dealer checked).
Therefore if the pressure relief valve sticks open no. 4 gonna kop it before no. 3.
If pressure drop is enough, length of time relief spent open, the whole bottom end is screweed. whether hot or cold, even more so the higher the rpm.

Which is exactly not what I was doing when it went. I was ripping around sure, off and on boost, wanging it around corners, never going over 6000rpm, never sustaining full boost for more than 8 or so seconds, maxing out on my speed limiter between roundabouts.

These problems seem to be very common with the STI models, how are they different to the noraml non sti scoobs, answer this and it may bring us closer to the conclusion, only partly...
Dont the STI engines get blue printed..??? so this could disregard the tolerance theroy...??
There is a lad near me who had a STI type R and his engine went at around 30,000 miles and he had just had a oil change...
Another guy near me had a MY 98 sport and the bottom end went on that after very low milage...!!
Wasnt there some thoughts about the fuel rail/furl injection at one point...

But MK certainly does produce a lot of heat - probably more than a high-speed run as the car's never going that quick but is under (some) boost virtually constantly. The roundabouts seem to be just the right distance apart to be too long to coast & too near together to actually get to a speed & hold it... Heat soak followed by boost followed by heat soak followed by boost etc.

My comment was aimed at showing a possible 'straw that broke the camels back' - lift off is (I *think*) the highest load placed on a rod/bearing except for detonation. Anyone?
An APS induction kit on an STi with standard ecu is highly likely to be running lean - was there det damage to the pistons?
Any failure after recent service - did the dealer underfill oil, was the correct procedure followed when changing the oil (cranking engine without spark/fuel until oil pressure light goes out)?

The lad that i spoke to said that the dealer had 'over filled' the oil.... but they denied it...!!!
Surly if the STI engines are blue printed then there has to be a reduced chances that the cranks are poorer than the non sti's...
The bloke who had his sport bottom end go who i know was gutted... however he had it fixed under warranty.... it as a R reg as far as i know and he had only had it about 3 weeks and it went....!!

Maybe mine went because it has a yellow oil filler cap. I have seen others with black ones. Or would an uprated blitz one be better??? Perhaps some colours of car **** their engines more than others.

I was there, in the old black granada.
It may be cheap stuff, but there is a little bit of waffle here. After reading the other big end thread, waffle here is an understatement, and clearly some people ( but not all ) have never seen inside a subaru engine.
