fatherpierre,

I used to smoke 20-30 a day, gave up 11-12 years ago. Just stopped - no patches, books.

Thing is, I loved smoking, and would still smoke if it wasn't so bad for you and didn't make you stink.

Every so often I buy a packet and smoke the lot - usually on a long car journey - then don't touch another for a year.

The key to it for me was thinking of myself as a non-smoker, albeit one who still smokes very occasionally. I could have one right now and enjoy it, but there's no way I'd look to have another in an hour's time (which I used to do) or consider buying a packet.

One thing I realised - bad hangovers are at least as much to do with excessive smoking as excessive alcohol.

Just an update on this:

It's been six weeks now and I've not touched any of the filthy things! The urge has gone and the smell of smokes makes me wanna puke.

Didn't realise I smelled like some of the guys I work with!!

I've noticed a definite increase in my fitness level too.

Wasn't as hard as I'd imagined. Thank **** I did it

If there is any a reason or incentive to stop smoking then my father should have a quick chat with you. On Thursday he will be admitted to hospital for open heart surgery.

This is inevitably down to the 40-a-day habit he has had for years. At the present time he wakes up on the hour every hour, takes a puff of his inhaler and this relieves the excruciating pain in his chest. Double, triple, quadruple; they will only know when he goes under the knife.

Good luck

Keep at it!

EVERYBODY smokes in Portugal. You know you are going into an ultra -high-class restaurant (or one owned by Americans) when they offer you smoking or non-smoking. Coz for 98% of the establishments here, the concept is unknown. My wife suffers really badly from passive smoking, and it's one of the things that is really starting to aggravate me too.

Did anyone see the cartoon in Private Eye a few months ago? A couple are admitted to a restaurant, and the waiter asks them "Mobile or non-mobile?"

Gave up last November. After 3 weeks of being a right grumpy git it was easy. I even managed to go through 3 days in the Welsh Forests during the Rally of GB which was prime smoking time for me.

Used the ALAN CARR method, worked for me

Also I know 2 others that have used ALAN CARR either the book or the clinic

How many polos is he on a day now? Is it possible to get mint patches so he can wean himself off them?

I'm not giving up because I was always told a child that "NOBODY LIKES A QUITTER"
