Mechanic races MY CAR - not happy
#91
I doubt that Claudius would be happy them doing that beacuse it is set up for tarmac
I understand where Claudius is coming from and it does depend on the circumstances. The real issue is the difference between test drive and joy ride. In addition, it also depends who drives it. A workshop manager, senior mechanic etc. who hasn't got race/rally or similar experience shouldn't be testing cars to the max.

Well, 85 posts and JF's finally brought up the subject of engines warming up properly. Glad someone did.
Still no-one's mentioned the problems caused by shutting the engine down immediately after a blast. How many of these raggers do you think let the turbo cool for 2 minutes first?

Claudius, stop being thick.
I was going to put your attitude down to being french until i saw that post.
And trust me, the top rally mechanics do not thrash the cars they build for their customers, they set them up properly using the correct tools then give them a gentle shakedown, they do not nail them like the regular driver would, they cant afford to risk braking very expensive parts, which is always a risk with these cars, even on a short blat!
If anyone drove my car like a prat whilst it was being serviced, well, the garage concerned would soon be out of business, i would make sure of it.
As for making someone go out of business for driving your car in a way you dont like, I think you're a little bit harsh, here.
With any of my high performance cars i have always used specialists who see it as just another job, I usualy build a very good relationship with a local garage specialist so there is mutual respect there.

I don't care if the mechanic is Richard fecking Burns, if I catch anyone thrashing my car without asking first, then I'll kick their @rse up and down the street. Although, if anyone asks if they can thrash my car, they'll still be told to go **** themselves
Claudius,
If your car is truly a "rally" car (used in the loosest of terms), then I assume your quite happy for your mechanics to drive the nuts off it through a nice gravel and pot-hole ridden forest stage?

Be serious, dont misinterpret what I say on purpose! You get me wrong intentionally to slag me off afterwards, what kind of an attitude is that? I'm discussing mechanics driving your car with you, and you feel the need to verbally aggress me because you disagree?? Grow up and broaden your views.

Claudius, Scoob engines, unlike those in Evos, are made of chocolate..LOL..they need to be very well cared for. A ragging from cold and immediate shut down by some inexperienced *technician* , especially after a "dry" filter oil change, may well cause significant damage.
I think we're not talking baout the same league of people here.
As for the road testing - it depends on what the car was in for in the first place.

The one time my dealer took my car out for a road test with a technician driving I was asked to join him. Not invited ("would you like to"), asked ("the car is going for a road test and is just coming out of the workshop, will you go with them?").
I went outside and the passenger door was open!
I guess it depends on the dealers and the technicians involved.
With TSL you are always taken (not even asked) as part of the road test is you driving to make sure you are happy. Any issues could be discussed while the drive takes place!
I did have a tyre dealers in Rickmansworth want to take the car out... I told them it would be fine. I was very doubtful of that one!

This is getting silly.
It's a matter of property. No one has the right to take your car for a joy ride, just because they happen to work at the dealer that's doing some work on it.
You leave the car there for them to fix it. Nothing else.
It's totally unprofessional, and they don't deserve to be in business.
Call the police - TWOC.... they may also be interested in the way he was driving...
Talk to the manager.
If no comeback from talking to the manager of the dealer, I'd try IM and / or your local paper.
And name & shame on this site.
don't get mad, get even....

Although a small few like their cars to be cained by young mechanics who arent used to the cars, it should be left up to them to specify they don't mind. If this wasnt specified the garages need to assume you don't want it driven more than a couple of miles etc (dependant on work done).
I would be gutted if i'd spent 27k on a car and saw it whizz past sideways by some1 i hadnt consented to driving it - as would most!!!

One of my scoobs had 20+ miles on it when it came back from a service and I wasn't happy
I asked the service manager what oil he put in the car, he said he thought it was semi synth but wasn't sure but I shouldn't worry as it's got a warranty hasn't it? I didn't take it back there again....

When I took my 306 XSi to be serviced at a dealership, I found an extra 100 Miles on the clock. They couldnt tell me where it had gone and gave me a poxy 10% off next service thing. I now take it to Skip Brown to be serviced. They aint cheap but they are excellent as proven by their 5 - 8 week waiting list ! These are the true Pug pros ! They test before and after a service, and whats more I trust em.
I think it all comes down to who you trust.

I took my car in for service and also had the cam belt changed and with all these stories I made sure i noted the milage when it was dropped off.
Well picked the car up, they had washed it which was nice and then i looked at the milage......nothing they hadnt been out in it??
Now im wondering WHATS WRONG WITH MY CAR that no one wants to go for a joy ride in it
No joking aside in relived they didnt go out in it and also the have done a top class job.

Quote from Brendan Hughes,
Without taking anything away from JF, it was I that brought up the subject of engines warming up properly. My post is directly under his, so it was easy to mix up.
Also you are right about the turbo needing to cool down for a minute or two before shut down. I doubt they allow the engine to idle after a thrash at service.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

Take your car back in to the dealer, and complain about some obscure problem that only occurs intermittently.
Ask for the mechanic that worked on your car to come out for a test drive with you so that he can hear/feel the problem for himself. Insist on the same mechanic.
Take said mechanic on test drive out into the country, pull over somewhere and suggest he has a go. When he jumps out, drive off.
(Best done late in the afternoon in winter, or failing that when it's pi55ing down).

Even though it's a ****'s trick what the grease monkey did with you motor, but how many of you would do the same if you worked in a garage and had the opportunity to have a burn in a fast motor? Imagine you can only afford a c reg fiesta 950cc and you work in a garage that looks after Ferarris, etc! Very tempting!

WREXY & Brendan, I was told by a friend of mine who works for an RX7 specialist that you shouldn't thrash a turbo car, then leave it to stand idling before turning it off. It is quite obvious when you think about it, all the heat from the turbo can only escape through an already hot exhaust. which is running under an equally hot transmission. I always drive the final 2-3 miles home at low revs to get some cool air under the car, then leave the turbo-timer on for 30secs, because it's cool
P.S. I use my local main dealer (Monks Heath) for everything, and am exceedingly happy with the service I get

Ask anyone who has been to Dublin,Liverpool etc to pick up saome imported cars.....I have many times. I can assure you the lads unloading the cars "rip the guts out of them"
A mate who has imported 100's cars Pays someone in Dublin to make sure his cars are looked after
Also many dealers a few years ago would pay to have other dealers cars damaged etc...
