I think it's been a bit over-sensationalised - bit further down in the article, someone admits 'we don't know within several tens of millions of kilometres where it will be on that date'. So the chances of it hitting us are pretty small. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
We will get hit by a big one some day though. But maybe not for several million years.

I don't know why you guys are too worried about this. More than likely, we'd all be dead by then thanks to WWIII. The signs for it has been appearing a lot already. The asteroids would probably be an end to our sufferings..

Claudius - I'm still not worried. It's probably been passing us by quite happily for at least several hundred thousand years. It passes close by in 2019, we wave, it then heads back off into the dark and doesn't even get close again for a few more hundred thousand years.
Anyway, as Jade from BB might say 'Asteroids? Can't you get cream from the chemists for them?'

Apparently the odds on it hitting us are about 75,000 to 1 at the moment but getting shorter all the time, so my advice would be to get out there and stick a nifty on it.
More chance of winning on this bet than the lottery (14m to 1).
