Guys - just to warn you - There appears to be an unmarked bobby mobile travelling between the M5 stretch from Exeter to Weston super Mud. It is a White Mundano R Reg with large rear head rests hiding some nice blue flashy lights on the rear parcel shelf. Just thought you convoy type southern Scooby Doers might want to know about this.
Matt,
LOL, hmm suppose I am. Sideways and me were chatting about it the other day, and if he / or I died, it would be a lovely gesture, for the SW boys to pass the funeral service on WOT
Not that I'm comparing weddings with death
but nearly the same
I got a Forge VTA DV about a month ago, and it's a fantastic sound. Snow crash wants one after hearing mine. I prefer the waste gate chatter to the Turbo dump noise
It's great. I think I need a looser spring though, and drove past Forge today, but didn't have time to fire in there
I've noticed that I can control what sound I get from it now. It's grrrreat

Come and have a look at my car, and the logs that I have done with delta dash (no silly comments now)
Cheers Phill C

softwizz,
LOL put a external mic under the bonnet
I think that Snowcrash is looking to collect all the video footage / pictures of the day, as well as other days (for example me playing with a few P1s at Bedford in my old company car
) and I'm going to stick it all on CDr. Do you mind FTP'ing your video / pics ? Should be good
Cheers Phill C

Babber,
This occasion will be ultra-experimental for me, but the guys're welcome to copy whatever I get. My biggest problem is in-car mounting, I have an SM4 mount arriving tomorrow and B.Hague have advised me to use it inside the car *only*.
I already considered putting a mic inside the engine bay, but there are a couple of problems :-
(a) it gets pretty warm in there, and I don't want to lose a mic
(b) I don't have a portable mic mixer, or yet any clever sync gear, so I'd have to record the separate mic to MD and hope that the MD and camcorder wouldn't drift too far from each other
(c) what happens to the mic cable at the boundary of the engine bay? I guess there must be some orifice through which I can take it out and into the cabin, but I'm running out of time to investigate the possibilities
Any ideas gratefully received!

softwizz,
Surely you can connect an external mic, and mix the internal and external mic onto the Camcorder (assuming it's stereo) left track internal mic, right track external mic, and fade it all later ?
Have you got air con ? If you have then I think the only other entry point into the cabin is the rubber bung just above the brake pedal ?
Can't you use a cheap computer type mic under the bonnet ?
Cheers Phill C
PS Could get a lovely pair of SVHS rack mount Panasonic VCRs (through a time base corrector) powered through an inverter
Front and rear views

babber,
Only way to record built-in and external mics together is to use 4-channel mode, and that's 12bit 32KHz instead of 16bit 48KHz. I suppose I might try that out, the sounds aren't going to be that clearly defined in the first place...
Yes I have air con - this rubber bung sounds promising, does it come out from the cabin side or the engine bay side?
I don't have a cheap computer mic, I gave away the only one I had to a needy soul. What I intend to put in the engine bay is only a £30 item but it has very good performance and I'd rather it stayed in one piece. It also has the advantage of being a stereo one-point design, which should lead to a richer sound being captured. But its tiny - a tieclip model - and I have no idea how to insulate it against chassis bump/thump, let alone how to keep it cool. Have you thought this thing through?

softwizz,
The rubber bung is about an inch or so across and can be found just by the downpipe in the engine bay. Very close to the lambda sensor. It pops out into the engine bay side, and can easily be put back in once the cable has been threaded through. Inside the car it's quite easy to acess. You'll need to pull the carpet down (a little) and may find that black matting slightly covering the hole. Push a screw driver through the hole from the engine bay side and you'll find it easy!!
No sure the best place to stick a mic under the bonnet really, what about infront the radiator??
Hope this helps, Phill C

ask brian@rallyday.com (although i guess things are getting late for paddock parking) - or try and blag a ticket off someone - as if he's coming in the afternoon, im sure someone would have left the paddock to go home early...
i will be borrowing the works professional digital camera's on the day, dunno what i'm going to film....
i guess if me and softwizz keep on opposite sides of the track, then we might be able to edit the mess of footage together...

I still have two track sessions going begging - 9.40 and 10.40. If anyone is interested, please email me or call 07973 328612 as we need to set up the transfer ASAP. I paid £20 for each session.
Cheers,
Nick

Sorry for the delay in responding guys.
Wedding is August 31st in Northampton about 100+ miles from Bristol. Evening reception starts about 18.00 and goes on till about Midnight.
all the above is subject to change as I have given up wearing my trousers in search of a quiet life.

Snow,
Paul will be going in the morning with someone else, it's me who might be coming up in the afternoon, haven't decided yet, thought I'd better try and get hold of a ticket just in case, so I can park with all the scoobs. I'll have a scout round.
From what I remember of last year, a lot of people did leave early.
Depends if I get too stressed out in the morning.
Cheers.
Tracey

babber,
I can't see this rubber bung from the top side of the engine bay, and I don't have the facilities to get it up on a ramp, so I've found another way. Actually it's quite easy - under the rear edge of the bonnet just inside the hinge, provides easy access, and the mic cable is so thin it pops into the cabin via the door/frame seal.
I solved the other problems also - I strung a short bungee between the LHS of the strut brace and the front of the battery clamp, where it provides a nice vibration-proof perch for the tieclip mic in the area ahead of the water reservoir, that doesn't seem to get too hot.
Sounds are clearly defined (though it isn't the natural exhaust sound of course) and include all the other engine-bay sounds e.g. tappets. Not sure if this sound track would be entirely useable on its own, but I think some judicious mixing with cabin noise produces an exciting prospect!

snowcrash:
I tried just hanging the mic at the rear of the car, but it was picking up scads of body boom and precious little exhaust noise.
Can't hang it outside because wind noise would kill the recording.
Have you managed to mic up an exhaust successfully 'in flight'? If so, how'd you do it?
Anyway, I have bigger problems than that - my camcorder is so awkwardly shaped for the SM4 mount (which can't deliver the mount point any more than 8" inward of the windows) that I'm having to partially dismantle the damn thing. My wife *told* me I'd be better off with a pocket-sized model - should have listened to her!
(not really - there are compensations having an 'all-singing all-dancing' one).

lmao - im toying with the possibility of rear facing my camera..
- i haven't tried sticking the mic at the back b4 (just a suggestion)...
also my phone number has changed!!! it is now:
07815867927
dont phone the old one!!!

Couldn't you tape the mic to the rear bumper just above the exhaust ? Just an idea.
Steve.
Simon, We may need to think about how to get to Gordano as it's going to be one of the busiest traffic weekends for that stretch of the M5 !! Might be best to go through Bristol ?
