Well this is starting to suck:

Energy contract for works is due for renewal soon...

Current rate is 14.5p/Kwh for electric and 3.06p/Kwh gas.

New rate is 44.2p/Kwh electric and gas is 14.2p/Kwh !

To put that into perspective. We have a 7.5kw fixed speed screw compressor that runs 9 hours a day its power consumption doesn't really vary that much between it being loaded or unloaded. Currently it's about £2300 per year to run. When the new contact kicks in it'll be close to £7000 per year to run!!

I hate to think the gas the spray booth or space heater guzzles. Put it this way I can't see how any bodyshop can sustain this hike and still be able to do insurance repairs. Our bodyshop is closed since Covid which is just as well given this crap, but I can't see how other shops will cope unless they use waste/heavy oil oil burners. Which what I'm currently looking at...seeing that we pay for waste oil disposal and waste oil burners do exist; Just need to comply with regs etc. to run it.

And we're going to ditch a perfectly good compressor for something smaller, without the booth there is no need for the CFM to run paint guns, so that leaves the tyre changer, blowing up tyres and air tools (latter mostly replaced with battery tools anyway)...

Unless Truss pulls a rabbit out the hat...

Don't worry! Truss is here to save you and your kids and their kids after them will be paying for it! Conservatism at its best, borrow today and someone else will pay tomorrow!

British politics in general living in the pockets of the financial sector....Create bonds, print money, pursue growth, tax public to cover the interest, any shortfall...just do it all over again and again.

That's some quality company you're keeping there:

Sse tried giving us a £9600 bill for 3 months for our shop. It is a smallish gift/furniture/antiques shop and the only electric we use is for a small fridge, charge cable for the card machine, and the lighting which is all led bulbs. New smart electric rads fitted that are meant to be more economical but we have them turned off anyway.

It was estimated and they cut it, but have since given us a smart meter and are still trying to sting us for £4500.
We sell lots of candles. They can **** off!

because there was something very wrong with the meter in the first place hence the £9600 estimate. It is an old building, at least a couple of hundred years old and the wiring was terrible. We rent the building (my wife has a hairdressing salon next door in the same building) and sub let the flat to our friend, who is an electrician. I renovated the shop and he re wired, but wasn’t allowed to mess with the main cable going into the fuse box.

The meter is still playing up. To put it into some context, my wife’s side of the building is supplied by British Gas. It has more intense lighting for hair dressing, they use a tumble dryer for towels, hair dryers and hoods going all day, and the kettle is always on the boil supplying clients with cuppas. Her bills over the same period have been £100 a month (I’m sure this will rocket though)

but still don't understand why a 'smart' meter rather than simply it was replaced with a working 'normal' meter

Sse said they would fit one, electrician thought it would be a good idea to keep tabs on what is being used. I know there is a split of people that are fire or against them but I don’t understand quite why that is.

We are refusing to pay until they come out and do a check as to quite why they think we are using what they claim.

currently having an argument with home electric supplier after ours conveniently broke and they are insisting we should have Smart - they can get to ****.......installer has been refused entry once and now its radio silence......
installer told me they has plenty of std ones on the van anyhows......

they have been told to replace 'like for like' as they can't come up with any sensible argument why it should be anything else other than "it will save you money" ??? how exactly..........?

I’ve had one at home for years. They don’t save you money they just show you how much you are using by the day/minute/hour.
Being sensible and thinking about your energy usage is what saves you money, we just thought having one in the shop will show us a bit more what is going on.

I can’t see how they can make you have one, if you don’t want it.

May I ask what it is you don’t like about a smart meter?
Ive just googled them btw and there is a citizens advice page about them, it says you can refuse to have one fitted but if they are replacing a broken meter they might insist you have one as the older ones are becoming obsolete, although your engineer has said he has got some so they can’t argue that point.

its all far too 'big brother' and we are already very energy aware so we don't need any meter or worse App telling us when / if we are using electric as we already know because the light is ON........
its also simply contributing to more wastage as they seem very prone to failure / replacement

the main one is that No-One can answer the question as to what they do and why so wonderful and this on its own raises further questions IMO

Fair enough. I’m more concerned that my phone is big brother, I’ve had conversations while out and about and had emails relating to a subject I’d spoken about, but have never looked up on the internet.

Anyone here run a small business?
if so can I ask what the energy suppliers are charging you. Our shop has used 327 units since July, as we only use led lighting at the shop and the card machine. Sse are trying to charge us £7500 for this. My wife phoned them last week and today there is a debt collector at the door!
