have to remember its a WRX so replacement engines wouldn't be as expensive as the sti ones ,, plus rebuild could prob be done a tiny bit cheaper if power isnt the goal

True but most breakers only deal with STi, as that's where all the money is (STi parts for STi and also upgrade for WRX) Matty very rarely has an WRXs in for example and I'd be very wary of buying an engine from a generic breaker. If it was 10 years ago, there would be an abundance of low mileage WRXs in breakers but they'll all be high mileage now.

I don't think there is really any difference in price on a rebuild between WRX and STi engine (stock anyway). Labour is all the same, some parts maybe slightly cheaper. I know for example TDR charge exactly the same, only difference in price is on year of engine, not whether it's STi or WRX. The block, pistons, heads and crank are the expensive bits on an STi and you wouldn't be changing those on a rebuild unless catastrophic failure or looking for more power.

im gonna buy 2nd hand engine and see ho long it lasts for I think

im having rad flushed tomorrow so that may sort heating issue out

baffles me as it goes to over heat then just cools right back down again

Mate I don't want this to come across harsh but why are you not doing a compression test. Forget the second hand engine because you don't know if you need it. I'm also wondering if the cambelt was done properly or if the engine has skipped timming. We know the cause of your over heating so bleed the system properly. There is a tried and trusted method but I don't have the link to it, I'm sure one of the other guys can point you to it.

I do flap a lot lol
its more because the initial remap it only made 10bhp more and then after upgrading to the sti mods it only made 280 bhp so it’s kinda telling me the engines not right in the first place, if the heating problem is sorted then least I can drive it normally but I feel on borrowed time with it now anyway due to the issue with the engine not wanting to do anything with the remap etc

There are many reasons why an engine might not make power. Bad ignition so things like spark plugs, coils etc. Then you have air, blocked air filter, bad maf or the intake pipe collapsing on boost. Actuator is another thing I mentioned and then you have fuel delivery so things like fuel pump and fuel filter.

No diagnosis has really been done other then the camera inspection but other things should have been checked.

Hi guys
bit if a delay sorry been hectic
i
managed To get car checked over today
the compression test is coming back as 150on all
cylinders. No problem with overheating now as systems bled but has got a slight bubbling in the rad/expansion tank.

not really any closer to why it’s low on power

No you are wrong there. You know the car no longer overheats and the problem was how it was filled. You also know the motor itself is healthy so no need for a rebuild or such. Now to dig a bit deeper and start looking at other things

Yes mate I agree when it’s said like that, been given a number for a garage owners by one ex Scooby and one ex evo owner who did a full rebuild etc for the garage I took it too so fingers crossed I may get some
answers from them soon

How much did SC charge you if you don't mind me asking did they do any other checking or was it just a compression test.

I didn’t get the chance to go to sc as been manic with work so couldn’t have the time off sadly but he quoted me £150 for a in depth compression test and a sniffer test.

I had my coolant burped etc and compression test for £50 at my garage.
he has his own sti and just sold another he’s had for a few years so he’s pointing me in right direction at minute etc
