I'll post some quick pics, I've edited out some "things" in the pictures at the request of the subjects

There were some running "fly-by" tests too, but I didn't manage to grab photos of those.

 

Further on from my last test, I found that my blinder units seemed to be angled wrongly, and were pointing straight out (as described in the manual).

I angled mine up slightly (very slightly) and found that they were much more effective at scattering the laser, in fact the laser would not lock on AT ALL on most occasions, and the occasions it did, I had travelled approximately 800-1000 feet before it managed to lock on the signal, which is plenty of time to adjust my speed.

My unit is slightly different to Shunty's, with the receptors/emitters being much more visible, and there being 2 of them as opposed to his one.

We still both managed to block the signal with plenty of notice to adjust our speed if necessary.

Its one of those things that can only be tested "in the field" as it were, just a shame that no one else was able to test theirs at such short notice.

Well a BIG thank you goes to Burr & fellow officers for organising this, although I thought a few more people might have popped along to test their LE 850's....it wasn't THAT early on a Sat morning was it ?

Anyway, my son & I arrived there @ about 9 o'clock, & met Steve (burr) the 2 other officers, after a bit of friendly banter we decided to do 2 passes each.
I have the same model jammer, bought 1 year ago but I can see the design has changed looking @ burr's (the optical part of the unit looked twice as big)...& he has 2 units front mounted to my 1.

As my unit is mounted underneath my numberplate, almost @ the bottom of my car, I was dubious as to whether or not mine would detect the laser signal properly (or at all).

I am happy to say that the result was fantastic & it IS nice to know that the LE-850 does what it says on the tin!!
My 2 passes where 60 & 70 mph in a 50 limit, & both times the LE-850 detected the police gun & gave me ample time to slow down. The distance of the shoots where approx 400 metres.

I deliberatly decided to do both passes at slower speeds than normal, this was to make it easier for the officers to get a lock on my car. In other words if the laser gun couldn't detect my speed @ 60-70 mph what chance would it have @ say 90-100 mph (on a private road of course)

BuRR, you say you thought they were angled wrongly, do you think this was because you had positioned them so lowly ie below the plate. Were the officers aiming above the plate? The manual does encourage placement above the plate as PC's tend to aim high.

My personal theory is (not that it is possible) place one either side of the top of the windowscreen ie on the roof. This would give the best detection, scatter and protection.

 

AlanS - there is virtually no scatter with laser, hence you DO need them as close to the numberplate as possible
on the roof I hope you are joking ??

Mine is approx 2 inches away from the numberplate (underneath) & as described earlier worked a treat.
Also we did try to see how far the scatter could be detected by aiming the laser gun @ my euro 550...as this detects laser. We found that until it was virtually pointed straight at the euro 550 it did not pick up the signal at all.

I'm not saying that any is the right way - just that this now works
perfectly for me, as far as I'm concerned.

My theory is this:

Initially, the blinder only managed to block the laser efficiently when I
was "giving it some" and not when driving relatively normally. I reckoned
it was because when accelerating, the front of the car is lifted slightly,
and when cruising, its not. This also gave me the thought that I would be
vulnerable when decelerating (due to the nose dipping) when braking once the
Blinder registers the hit (which would probably be above the listed limit
for the road).

By angling them up slightly, I simulate the acceleration of the car, even
when cruising, thus giving me the protection.

Put it this way, on one drive past the laser could not get a lock on me AT
ALL.

West Yorkshire teaches their traffic bods to point the laser just above the
registration plate, and that's the area my friend was targetting today.

Shunty is well aware of the range of these pro-lasers, as he saw a
demonstration of it hitting a wagon in excess of 1,300 feet, and getting a
lock in less than one second.

btw - I could maybe arrange one more date - in a few weeks maybe, when some
others could test theirs. Let me know.

Burr, thanks for all the great info. I've just fitted mine and it's in the same place as yours. I have angled mine in a horizontal position as per the manual by bending the brackets slightly. But if I keep in line with the natural contour of the bumper it does angle slightly higher. Is this the angle of yours?

Well, mine are bent ever so slightly upwards.

By default, the units were facing straight out, with a constant 1-2mm gap between the top of each unit and the face of the underside of the front bumper.

Now I've bent the bracket slightly, the top edge of the unit more or less touches the bumper face.

I hope this makes sense?

I've negotiated with my colleageue, and at this stage we reckon we can do one more testing period.........

9am on Sunday 11th August 2002. Now I reckon we could cater for about 5 or 6 cars, maybe up to 10........ depending on the feedback I get.

Now, his availability on this date is totally subject to his operational commitments (as his post is a reactive one) and the location would be in the vicinity of J31 M62.

PS, if anyone hasnt registered yet, i suggest you do so this week, as theres a 30 day limit on the registration date, also get the numbers off the back of the units before you fit them, unlike someone i know!

Put it this way, my first fitting was not good enough, and it took a test run to sort the problems out.
