Definitely lesson learned. 😑
I wish I had the confidence to pull the engine out and have a fettle but the most I’ve ever done myself is change a few bolt on parts. I can imagine it would take a good few hours to do it too and with a new baby and half built house, time is at a premium. I will get it fixed (probably), but it will need to wait a while now.
It takes about a week to do it properly if you know what you are doing and do a thorough job. Sounds like its best left to someone else based on your current knowledge and home issues.

Out of interest where would one find a comprehensive list of clearances / tolerances for such & endeavor....?
And would said clearances differ from factory, if building a higher spec engine designed to handle more power / boost / abuse?

Sorry for the thread hijack
the factory workshop manuals list everything for stock engines.
yes, you use different values for high spec engines. Each part you use will have its own spec.
Quick update. I've decided to bite the bullet and get it fixed. It's pointless leaving it to rot on the driveway so it's booked in to have the engine removed on Wednesday.
Getting quotes at the moment but will be using a reputable builder to make sure it's done properly.
Will hopefully post some pictures when it's out and apart...
Now I just need to find a decent engine builder who isn’t either ridiculously busy or massively expensive.
harder than you might think...🤦♂️
Sounds like holding out for a good one is the best bet Engine Tuner build a lot of 2.1 strokers & could handle the whole thing from start to finish: teardown, build, run in & map.

Yep, Engine Tuner do have a good rep but you have to pay for it. My mate just had his rebuilt there, it ended up costing over £14k!
If I was keeping the car for myself then I wouldn't hesitate to use someone like that but I'll likely sell later this year so it doesn't make sense financially.
I'd like to use AS performance but they currently have a 3 month wait list so I have to decide if I want to wait that long....
TDR are one of the best, i always took my scoob there. tony, michael and mark always had time for a chat and never tried to sell me something i didnt need
Engine is now out and stripped. Has some strange marks on one piston/cylinder but otherwise not too bad.
It seems that the pistons have been modified for the oil squirters but one was still chaffing, probably what was causing the slappy sound.
I'll let the pictures do the talking...

oil squirter hits piston....... Piston loses by tko😭
Amazing that it's been doing that for many miles and still didn't fail though!
It's had a fair amount of abuse too (especially from the previous owner, as you know)
The new engine is now in and running!
It sounds so much better than the last one too. I should be picking up the car tomorrow, all being well.
It was a bit tight fitting the oil cooler hoses around the new sump but we managed to squeeze it in there.
I also had the old headers welded up while they were off as the crack was very small. Not sure what I'd do with the new set I bought yet, may list them on here at some point.
The heat wrap on the headers is looking really worn now so will probably remove it. It's also reminded me that I need to give the underside a touch up and underseal.
It look very good underneath for a 17 year old UK car but prevention is better than treatment right...
I got the intake sand blasted and repainted while it was off. Looks fresh again now Very tight fit! Not too bad but could do with a little bit of a freshen up
