The ECU was in essence a Version V STI with a tweak for additional knock safety as the UK had a lower octane rating for super unleaded fuel compared to the higher 100RON in Japan.
You sure?

I'll correct myself - it was a Version V ecu mapped for 100RON fuel with additional knock retardation for our lower rated UK fuel.
a poor effort by Subaru UK to make the car run on our super unleaded and the introduction of briquettes into the tank to get the octane up to higher level.

If I was buying an old classic I would want a more sorted engine (let's not forget what happens to the bottom end on these early cars), so ideally a new age block, keeping the original heads, better brakes up front like Brembo's, and new springs & dampers

Those totally original 20 y.old cars on 60K+ miles are tired out, and for me at £18,000 just ridiculous

Could you clarify please?
Passenger side mate ,right side of turret as you look from the front

I think as long as it has got a tag its ok.
Always on the passenger side mate
