I had a trade policy for about 6yrs when I was running my own business, that was with Tradex... some said they were dodgy and wouldn't pay out, but they paid me out twice in that time and they were quite generous too... one was a write off out here in Croatia and my mrs went into the back of a Merc... I think the problems surrounded people who weren't really traders and came a cropper when asked to provide proof of trading etc.

They seemed to have morphed into another company who's name escapes me (google is your friend) but when I ceased trading I kept the policy on until renewal time and then came clean with them and told them I wasn't really trading anymore... was there anything we could do? then they told me about Family Fleet and let me carry my no claims over too.

I've not had that policy for about 3/4yrs now though, so not sure if they still do it.

I tried the trade policy a few years ago when I had a few cars at the same time.
When I went back to one car for me and one for the wife I let it go and just insured each car to maintain the no claims bonus for each of us.
My mate has 8 cars ,and he has a trade policy which he pays about £1700 annually so when he gets a new one he just adds the reg to the policy, nice and simple.
I think it is a bit harder now to claim your a trader and get a trade policy , so I haven't gone down that route.
My SLK 55 is only £460 to insure so it sticks in my throat a bit to pay £403 for a car worth a fraction of the Mercs value but it is what it is.
