Tony - with you totally. These cars are too easily obtained now, and are not driven with the respect such a powerful car should be given.

Stef - you're wrong - my other car is now a Galant VR4 - and insures for half that of the Scoob - and it is just as high a group.

Boost II - too right and to a great extent, the more the merrier.

Didn't really mean to start a major debate here, but the comments are interesting. Tony yours are very valid and I agree totally.

The point I wanted to make was...

for so long I thought I was totally invincible in my car... you know... me and my scoob will take on the world...

until I lost it big time on a bend, probably because I braked instead of putting my foot on the pedal, Tony describes it quite well, being female I was not strong enough to hang on to it, but I did manage to pull her straight (somebody up there loves me) preventing me, the car and my two passengers from going through the wall onto a railway line... sheer, complete stupidity on my part, so since then I have come to appreciate the fact that at the end of the day......

IT IS ONLY A CAR... A LUMP OF METAL... IT COULD KILL YOU....

so just slow down... that's all...

Penni,

You did make quite an assumption, implying the drivers in question actually know about and read this site.

Your topic heading could have been better thought out.

Oh, and just as an amusing aside, isn't it a bit "stereotypical" or "sexist" even to make a comment like "...being female I was not strong enough to hang on to it..."... There are quite a few successful rally and race drivers out there who happen to be "female" to. That comment really tickled me, especially when I recall your posting about your wheel buying/painting expirience.

And you are making an assumption that they don't read this BBS... I would lay odds they do....

As far as my comments are concerned, they were a criticism at my ability not the ability of others. It is a common known fact that the majority of women are not as strong as the majority of men. I fit into that category. And the situation I was in I would be surprised is the majority of men could have held the car on the road.

Moving on to Female race and rally drivers, they are well trained in their craft. Their cars are much lighter and designed specifically for that sport. My road car is heavier and my ability to match their driving prowess limited.

So Moray, were you driving the blue scoob or the silver one....

P

Black Cat (Penni)

What has being female got to do with hanging onto a car when it is in trouble I think you'll find that the car actually got very light when in trouble not the other way round

also, I tend to drive "quickly" when I am in the car by myself and driving conditions and visibility are safe. I would not get into a dangerous situation with two passengers in my car

I'm not having a go at you because I agree with some of the points that have been mentioned

Lastly I would say that owners should definately get themselves on a track day, be it an airfield or racetrack. It is the only way you will learn the cars Capabilities and limits

Penni,

What would physical strength have to do with it anyway? Does your car not have power steering assistance?

Regardless of what you chose to assume about the drivers you encountered, you could still have chosen a better title for this topic.

I have been having fun driving a nova gte and e30 m3 lately... since my blue scoob snapped a conrod just before new year... so I can say hand on big blood pumping muscle, It wasn't me! I now have the excuse I needed to go internal.

Penni,

Perhaps for the record you could tell us what YM and type of impreza`s these motors were ? Were they the "92-94 WRX`s" "that can be had for 4K - 6K" or were they infact uk turbos ?
(soapbox out) Don`t you just luv the my motors newer than yours snobbery and the turbo v`s WRX snobbery and the think I`ll jus open my big gob an blurt a load of crap coz i haven`t really got anything constructive 2 add comments..... & hey i think I`ll try and devalue some peebs cars whilst i`m talkin cack. Just to keep some of you misinformed peebs right, the old wrx block isn`t made of chocolate like some of the newer uk ones, therefore they can take heavy mods without bursting
Anyway bottom line scoobs are a one of the "drivers" cars irrespective of guise. But as I`ve said before on numerous occasions " you`ll find your driving limits well before you find the scoobs" (well most of us)there`s no subsitute for driving experience. What it sounds like a few peebs need do is ditch the pipe n slippers, get down to your local track and get some experience. Then you`ll know why they manufactured scoobs

(Si took so long to type i forgot wot the thread woz edit as u c fit)

You are so right, the elitist attitudes of some people on here are laughable at times, maybe the government should bring in a law requiring scoobs over 5 years old be destroyed? That way the 'plebs' couldn't get their hands on them at all then!
I'd also love to see where you can pick up a WRX for £4k - £6k.
Incedentally, I'll be going into the SIDC arena again at Trax this year in my 95 WRX 'plebmobile', if anyone wants to deal with a lowlife like me, great! Alternatively, go and stand next to someone's 22b or P1 with your nose in the air!

BTW, that little rant was in no way aimed at p1 or 22b owners, merely at the people who think they are better than everyone else. They REALLY need to get a grip!

I think some of you are getting the wrong end of the stick here.
To start with you can pick 92-94 wrx's up for under 6k, now for a car with 240bhp (in japan) its a steal, the problem is when you stick some kid in it whos had his licence for 2 years and owned a clapped out gti since he passed his test.
The fact is, driving on the track and driving on the roads are two COMPLETELY different things.
Anyone who thinks that there going to be much better after driving on the track and then transferring it to the road is a complete IDIOT!!!
What you do learn at track days is how progressive your car is, how well it handles and how well you can play with her without killing yourself or injuring yourself or your pride too much.
Track conditions are completely different to road conditions, track tarmac is top quality stuff, good surface and grippy, roads on the otherhand are as different as chalk and cheese, some are good and some aint, grip levels vary from corner to corner because over the years parts have been replaced with different types of surfacing. This leads to one problem, the driver.
If he or she thinks they are rally god (as both male and female drive this type of car) and dont have the experience to drive within their limits or the limits of the roads then they are stupid, and the point that Penni was trying to get over is that these cars are not indestructable, neither are the drivers, and its the drivers that make mistakes, sometimes getting away with it and sometimes not.
Only experience tells you this, thus the reason the less experienced people think they are good, there not, the car is but its not forgiving when you make a mess of thinks though.
As for wrx's not having chocolate engines like the uk models do.... sorry, id say you would be able to get about the same bhp out of a uk turbo as you would out of an early wrx safely, the best engine there is in the subaru range is the 2.2 22b one, then the sti engine, the wrx drops into the lower class oh and dont say that one car is better than the other, improvements have been made over the years and i do drive a uk turbo (MY00) but its not the car, its still the driver.

This is TOP quality drivel!
Whilst all this banter is going on, I suggest everyone takes some time out and telephones their insurance companies tomorrow. Then proceed to find out what this years re-newal price is!
I was told by several insurance companies that due to the influx of impreza's (imports and UK supplied) in the UK over the last few years, price of the older ones have come down. This enabling the younger element to buy them and therefore raising the insurance premiums. What does add to this is the fact that, as so many of you care to illusrate, most of the tear arseing around and smashing up, is carried out (according to the insurers) by the younger generation.
Therefore we all suffer, but at some point the younger generation will not be able to afford the insurance.
CONCLUSION:
All us oldens, weather out the storm until such time the sun shines and all the 93-94 imports are decorating lamposts. OR (and the key here is) that if everyone is sensible, old and young alike, premiums should soon level. However, as the saying goes, it only takes one bad apple!

Cheers, Jacko (flamesuit over me PJ's activated...kerchunk!)

I think the only attitudes that have changed are yourselves, resenting the fact that there are more on the road, with younger people buying them as they are very fast. Speed sells (obviously.) I doubt there are many people on here who can say they didn't buy the car for it's awesome acceleration and handling. Isn't that what everyone wants? Why feel annoyed that other people can buy the same car as you?
Yes it had it's cult appeal and friendly enthusiast following, relatively unknown, but times change. Rather than resent the new owners, be happy that you had it before everyone else...

Saphire Cossies have been cheap for years now, so I guess a fair percentage are owned by the young max power lads you are all stereotyping - so they must cost a fortune to insure right ? has anyone actually compared the cost difference ? I was quoted substantially less for a well modified Cossie than the Scoob.

Ps I love all the Kiddies (hark ! I am only 25) who buy the older cars - these are my potential customers when Scoob has to go !!

On another note - what is the thinking behind buying a 5K Scoob when they cost more than that to run for 1 year ! why not buy a newer one ? if you can afford the running costs you must have the cash anyway ?

Tonyburns,

Sorry don't agree with you mate, You cannot help but get valuable "road" experience from doing track days. Ask people like Stef and SDB if they know more about the characteristics of their cars since putting them on the track, I think they'll tell you that they have learn't a great deal without having to do it on the road

You don't see regular track day people like them wrapping their cars around lamposts, I think they save the enthusiastic driving to the track, where they can smash them up (sorry Steff couldn't resist ). Seriously though You definately get to know what to do if you are unfortunate to hit that bit of ice or oil on the road. And lets not forget that we all bought these cars to drive at slightly higher speeds when the road conditions permit, otherwise we would all be driving GL models with spoilers on

Rant over

The writing has been on the wall for a while now, we just have to adjust our approach to other scooby drivers. We can't assume that they are any different from the usual nightmares.

It's bad enough driving a scooby when every dick-head who has an I suffix on his/her car wants to have a go, but now we have to endure it from people in Scooby's too!

Bit too lazy to read all this but tend to agree with most people.

I have recently changed to a F355 from a scoob and just the other day while 2 of us 355's are driving along a scoob gets in the middle. Guy (young racer type) gets a bit excited and floors it up my mates rear, I back off. Mate decides to floor it after changing down two gears (he has the F1) with traffic everywhere. Scoob follows suit boosting on and off, while im flashing my high beam frantically in horror. Shortly after 355 mate narrowly missed a 10 ton bus and must cross a few white lines in the process. I know all this not from following them, but from my other mate whos in the passenger seat.

Anyway to cut a long story short even ferrari drivers can be complete idiots! I blame myself anyway cos I think I might have screeched past the scoob (safely) before hand.

This is HongKong so the normal rules don't apply
