the turbo timer is great at defrosting the car , the snow/winter tyres have been on the last 6 months or more , the drive ok even when it's not cold but not all winter tyre do , the benefit of buying a cheap set of wheels and putting snow tyres on them , non winter tyres v winter tyres is night and day , when it has snowed it saved me from two cars who had lost it in the snow funnily enough one was a range rover who lost it , probably thought he had a 4x4 and can do any thing , then realised he had no grip approaching a red light .. a bit of an oh crap moment , the other a jag going down a very steep hill side ways not pleasant for him
Had mine on for a couple of months now, had to use them in anger last night, quite a heavy snow storm, quite un-nerving driving down into the valley and then the last mile up to my place, squirming all over the place on a single track road with a 300ft drop on one side but I made it home.
This is just after I got home.
And this is out side next morning.

Laughed my head off today at cars scattered on the hard shoulder, putting on snow chains; had an easy drive up to 1400m on compacted 20cm snowfall.....That's what 4x4 and winters are for!
I put Michelin Pilot Alpin 4's on my car and find they are just better and more grippy below around 8c than my Conti summer tyres. i find they are more worth while for the grip advantage in colder conditions more so than the snow benefits because they don't harden as much as summer tyres.
Went one step further yesterday... after my experience last friday night in the snow storm and some rather hairy moments getting back home, which is just shy of 300m above sea level, sea level being the valley below my house and roughly a 2 mile drive up hill to get there, some of which has some rather steep slopes on... I decided it's probably a good idea to invest in a set of snow chains now that I don't have a 4wd daily driver.
For the sake of about £20 I thought it better to have them than not, as the prospect of possibly ending up walking the last mile some time or another to get back home doesn't appeal to me.

Seriously glad that I ve got them on here in the Alps. Roads aren't salted in the national parks, we are driving everyday, and winters give peace of mind. You've still got to drive with small throttle and brake inputs though
