It didn't take as long as I thought before the EU cabal were flushed out by their actions.

Holier than thou attitude regarding the NI protocol.

We mustn't do anything to jeopardize the fragile peace treaty- first hiccup on their part, they go full monty, disregard any rational respect for the protocol. initiate hard border in Ireland.

The EU can never, ever be trusted.

Btw our USA turnover and profit numbers are in. They match the European figures. The more interesting point is these figures were generated in less than 50% time the European plant has been running. I always thought USA would be a much much bigger market going forward. I might visit my family and pop into the plant to see how many more staff we have

Just remind me, is the UK in a pointless union to lose sovereignty, laws, fiscal control and pay billions to do trade with the USA?

The EU article 16 move is akin to the argies invading the Falklands

I like this piece it really typifies how big a foook up Vindictive Deutsch Lady has got herself into

How EU’s floundering vaccine effort hit a fresh crisis with exports row

A new rule on exports from Europe suddenly blew up into a threat to the withdrawal agreement – and a hasty backtrack

Daniel Boffey in Brussels and Michael Savage in LondonSun 31 Jan 2021 09.00 GMT

3It started with a tweet by a blogger at 4.36pm on Friday. It ended with the prime ministers of the UK and Ireland warning the European commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, during late night calls, that she had put peace at risk by effectively seeking to erect a vaccine border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

“OK, I’m not usually on here any more, but I’m making an exception because this is very interesting: the EU’s regulation on export controls for vaccines *does* include vaccines going to Northern Ireland, and the EU is invoking Article 16 of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol,” @dijdowell had tweeted. “I really didn’t have Article 16 being used *by the EU* in the first month of the Protocol’s operation on my list of predictions for 2021. I would be fascinated – *fascinated* – to know what the Irish Government makes of setting this precedent.”

It did not take long for @dijdowell’s curiosity to be rewarded.

You know you have f∆cked up on an epic scale when Sinn Féin, the DUP and the Archbishop of Canterbury are united in condemning you,”

There wont be a uncontrollable member fee, it wont come with loss of sovereignty, laws, fiscal control.

That's how trading pacts work. No sly underhand skulduggery to take over sovereign nations

He wasn't the one making the Brexiteers are racists comment.

I'm sorry for this going off topic but I had to pick you up on that.
Had that been been someone claiming all muslims were terrorists they'd have been banned quick sharp.
I was just making the point that if people want equality then it cuts both ways and your sweeping generalization was out of order.

As a moderator you really should set a better example.

Anyway I've said my bit I hope you see where I'm coming from.

I will hazard a guess that a far bigger proportion of Brexit voters actually were/are xenophobic, than Muslims are terrorists.

Ok sarcasm fail. This thread derailed a few years back so it's nice to have a change. I'm sure you know some people on this thread regularly makes snide jibes on things like race and Brexit. I'm mocking them for it, indeed for their usually sweeping generalisations and strawmen.

Pulling the mod card in this thread ain't going to change people's opinions and the inferred stereotypes; Clearly some do have a problem and a difficulty in rationalising more than a few different viewpoints. This is no worse than an episode of Question Time. However if you look back far enough you will see I will have pulled up the conduct of a angry remain voter for outbursts and use of words like gammons and brexidiots. Not going name any more names, and no disrespect to any of them, some are knowledgeable Scooby owning folk and good contributors back in the day, but with very polarised political opinions and love to make a point of it; Using this thread as their echo chamber every so often.

To be frank, this is the way things are now, these 'angry' people are just looking to vent as if the people to collectively blame will read it. Reply to them however and you become their targeted strawman. Sort of like twitter or the BBC's HYS and social media in genera, they are here to stay.

Of course bear in mind that I'm a middle aged middle class caucasian non-practicing Christian working male. Given recent world events my view doesn't matter, because they say I'm privileged, and if I stay silent on the issue? Well, then I'm apparently the problem. I have no answer for that, so yeah I know we (white men) are going to be at the brunt of every insult and generalised accusation going (and worse if you voted Tory/Trump etc) and not be allowed to give it back because it will offend. That's a problem beyond Scoobynet, it's sh*t, I know.

Hmmm, that got pretty deep (lock down cabin fever). Hopefully you got the jist of where I coming from as well.

Ali,
Great reply and thanks for seeing things in the light they were meant.
Of course I understand your perspective.
I haven't read much of the thread largely due to the vitriol spouted on both sides of the issue but I did think I had to make the point I did.
Moving on, its also refreshing to be able to raise a point and discuss it without insults being hurled in both directions..
If only that happened more often on social media platforms.
Take it easy.

So how has the trade landscape with the US improved since Brexit? What was it about membership of the EU that was holding your company back from growing US trade? How was your company unable to see more growth in the EU prior to Brexit?

You can't judge all companies and the whole UK economy based on your personal experience with your company that may well have made many mistakes in failing to grow markets over the years. As you have said yourself in the past, it was Brexit that kicked your management into thinking about expanding in Europe! Many UK companies are not in a market where trade outside the EU is an option. 80% of the British economy is services and services are not part of any trade deal, so they couldn't grow outside the EU in the past and now they've lost access to the EU too!

So far I've yet to see any advantage to UK businesses other than the promise of extra trade deals, which a) will take years to complete and b) the EU already has many trade deals in the pipeline with a stronger negotiating position than the UK has. All your arguments about the success of your company are irrelevant to Brexit (other than waking up your management). The fishing industry isn't any better off, the service industry is way worse off, transport and logistics is suffering and imports from the EU are more expensive. Where are the winners that have actually benefited as a direct result of Brexit?

I joined the industry 20 years ago when Corus, as it was before being sold to tata, even tried to introduce UK specific steel sections to try to survive against chinese imports, but thay didn't work and ots been declining ever since.

Short version, brexit has done little if anything at all and if you want anyone to blame, blame China.

I'm aware of the problems the steel industry has faced, including Chinese steel dumping and the UK blocking the EU from raising steel import tariffs to stop the Chinese dumping and how Germany and others have been giving state aid to support their industries while the UK did nothing to help its own industry.

Now, once again the UK has sold the UK steel industry down the river by negotiating insufficient tariff free quotas for UK steel exports to the EU. If the industry wasn't already dead, this could well be the final nail in the coffin! Like the fishing industry, the UK doesn't see steel as a sustainable industry in the UK and has sold it down the road in the Brexit deal. To be honest, they probably see the demise of the Steel industry as a big win in reaching climate targets!

The Brexit bombshell won't hit until the export quotas have been reached. When they do, it could well be goodbye to British made steel!

It worked though didn't it! AZ is now supplying the EU with 30% more vaccine! Guess where from?

It WAS already dead or did you ignore what i wrote about it being sold again? Why try to protect an isdustry that isn't viable? you seem to live in a dream world where everything should be supported, in the EU/out of the EU makes no difference at all to the steel industry, the final nail as you claim was hammered in way before brexit.

Not every bad thing is because of brexit like you seem to want to claim.

After and only after the UK has used up its allocation contractually agreed by AZ
