So much for the Brexit Bonus! This is the one of the most stupid Brexit waste of money so far!

For one, the UK should have made remaining in Galileo an absolute priority. We have already invested millions in developing Galileo and just as its coming online we lose access! Total stupidity!!!!

Buying one-web as a replacement "to rival" Galileo is also ridiculous! One-web is(was) a Low-Earth-Orbit satellite constellation designed to provide internet access to remote locations. It failed because it was simply too expensive and delayed compared to Star-Link, there was simple no viable business model! It was never designed to provide global positioning and lacks the accurate clocks required to provide accurate global positioning.

The One-Web developers have sold this deal to the UK government with the idea that they can easily reconfigure the satellites to provide a GPS service, but "simply" and "satellite development" don't go hand in hand, and given this will need to have encrypted channels for military service (the whole reason why the UK/EU wants its own GPS system in the first place), the cost of re-purposing One-Web as a GPS system will be enormous.

Is this waste of money what the Brexitees voted for when they knew what they were voting for?

Apart from costing the taxpayer a rather big pile of wasted cash, OneWeb's satellite's aren't even in the right orbit to provide a navigation type system:

Its not impossible in that orbit, but the footprint of the satellites is much smaller, so many more satellites are required to provide coverage. The short distance also means a shorter time difference between satellite signals needed to determine the position (although an advantage to reduce latency on internet service), so much faster and accurate time measurement is needed in the receiving hardware to get an accurate position. The final problem with low orbit is the speed at which the satellites have to travel to stay in orbit is much faster which means you have to very quickly gain a fix from the satellite before it disappears out of view!

There is a reason why all other GPS systems are operated at a much higher altitude - it simply makes more sense! But common sense is not something the current British government is renowned for!

But of course all Brexiteers were fully aware that leaving the EU meant leaving the Galileo program and the UK wasting billions trying to replace it!
