Low Flying Milatary Jets
you are complaining about something you know nothing about. You have no idea why they were operating in the manner they were. Is having a few military jets make a bit of noise for a few moments really that inconvenient to you that you just had to make an official complaint? If they were going that fast the noise can't have been for more than a few seconds. You said yourself you've not had anything like it in 17 years so a one off is hardly a big deal

My question to you is were you there? and if so, perhaps you would like to share with everyone why my judgement of what I witnessed did not warrant a complaint?

'I say old chap, what an utterly disgraceful show of airmanship by those dastardly old Gerry's!'
a couple of years ago I was walking on our village rec
and was astounded to see/hear a RAF Jet (Tornado I think) doing some aerial acrobatics over the next village - he really gave it the beans
quite exciting tbh
turns out it was a "display" for an RAF officer that was getting married in the next village

this ^. engineer in my works brother is a pilot and has flown over a few places doing a "fly by" for family members. its quite common and im guessing would be frowned upon by the top brass, but it does happen.
It's better when you don't see them coming, it's a hell of a noise when you're not expecting it.
Mind you the slower stuff can be just as interesting, was staying in mid Wales at one point and a C130 came in low over a field just outside of the village. That was something to see, especially seeing Call of Duty was big at the time so it had the associated mental image of something that size on a strafing run.
Had a V-22 Osprey fly over our house once as well, that was weird 'cus they sound just like a chinook.

(Tiree is as flat as a pancake)
Then came the noise - my word what a sound
I've been in the Alps when fast jets have flown over (close to French-Italian border, so could have been from either military), and although they obviously weren't flying as low as 100ft, I could well imagine that the sudden noise might be enough for a hiker or rock-climber to lose their footing or miss a handhold, if the fly-past caught them at exactly the wrong moment. Even then, I still can't believe they'd complain about it though

I live very close to RAF Halton (almost back onto it), where everyone in the RAF does their basic training. While the air strip is no longer used for RAF planes it's still used for light aircraft and we get all sorts flying low directly over our house. In fact, our house is in direct path for the landings, so we get them very low indeed. The kids love it and so do we. In show season and for special occasions all the jets do fly overs for Halton. It's quite regular to have a whole air show we can watch in our back garden. We love it!

I find the herd of two seater Cessnas far more annoying than a military jet; They serve no real purpose, noisy, fly too low, have crap range, poor performance, no payload/passenger capacity and all they seem to do is be flown in circles by amateurs on a sunny weekends when I want some peace and quiet. I'd rather have the odd military jet than have these things buzzing over my house.
Fwiw I have nothing against light aircraft if they serve a useful purpose; if I win Euromillions I'll buy myself a Socata TBM 900 (or make do with a TBM700) and use it to fly to a Spanish bolt-hole every odd weekend
On another note...the light aircraft in Spain (two and four seaters) appear to be far far quieter...probably much newer with more modern prop and exhausts.

I don't get many jets but do seem to appear to be right on the flight-path for Chinook training missions. Often get buzzed fairly late at night by two or three of them in close formation. Amazing machines...

Used to have a family holidays near there as a kid and would always look forward to catching the jets practising, it was seeing this as a kid that made me want to become a fighter pilot.
Went back there as a teenager with the air cadets too

Best thing about living and working around airports..
Used to live 2 mins from Donny airport and saw the Vulcan most times.
Work out Lincolnshire way so see the red arrows out playing.....I mean training
And the typhoons playing....training from coningsby.
Good sights to see.

My old boss was with an American friend at one of the US airbases in Cambridgeshire many years ago when some low flying jets came over. His friend simply said 'The sound of freedom, Doug', and he was spot on.
I imagine those the OP complained about were on a practice run to bomb the **** out of anyone starting the first sentence of a new topic with 'So', but I might be wrong....

I'm with you on that front.
Maybe the pilots will be disciplined for not maintaining a safe stopping distance behind the plane in front - what is the stopping distance at 1400 MPH.
Love that sound - it was our daily wakeup call while on holiday in Italy - every morning (weekdays only) at 0830 one or two military jets whizzed by and were on the horizon within seconds.
Dunno what it is - but the sound of anything with serious power just stirs the soul.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this experiment in online forums. I was interested in seeing the relationship between "unpopular posts" and the responses that ensued and this evidence will form the basis of my write up.
I figured that a car forum would have a strong affiliation with jets (given the speed and noise) and so thought this topic would be very emotive given the pride people in the UK place on their armed forces and you didn't disappoint
Sorry to have spun a bit of a line but I needed to make sure the research was authentic and without prejudice
I hope you enjoyed the added misspelling touch in the header but no-one really came back on me in terms of the explanation I provided.........
Some really nice pictures added though which is a real bonus
