Military Coup in Turkey
It needs some thought and analysis and sound interpretation, but for me it's something that gets better everytime I read or hear it. Thanks to my father-in-law for the introduction - he knows a thing or two.

Now this takes wandering off the thread to a new low, WTF?
This seems to be escalating, with apparently 50,000 people in senior positions arrested/fired from their jobs/ suspended. I must be growing dimmer because I haven't seen an explanation for the revolt. Presumably it had roots or the army would not have been involved, but the people seem to be behind the government. I'm confused

I don't think it is just you
it seems terribly confused, Erdogan is an Islamist - but an ally of the US/UK, the plotters secular??!!
and sort of backs up my personal thesis that nothing much makes any sense these days
maybe that's on purpose - keep the populous guessing

Erdogan is taking Turkey away from secularism and toward a more Islamist state.
NATO and the ARRC have invested heavily in the bases or the use of them in the fight against Da-esh. Erdogan is now cracking down on the moderate intelligencia to further oppress freedom of speech and thought.
The West have to be very careful here or they may allow the fight with Da-esh to get one more country nearer. The Turks have the largest standing Army in the European area and while they not be the best fighters the numbers available will make a difference.

But this doesn't seem to have kept the populous guessing. I would have expected a few bricks/bottles/flares to have been thrown by the odd prol supporting the rebels but nothing; just lots of Turkish flags waving, soldier thumping and tank climbing by the general public. The army and its friends must have badly miscalculated. Just seems unlikely that they could have got it so wrong though.

It would seem there simply wasn't enough time to rebel rouse and agitate and coerce the majority and as such the critical ground swell was absent.

According to the report, which appeared in the local Cumhuriyet newspaper, the 300 putschists had heard that the Turkish government was about to issue arrest warrants for soldiers accused of supporting Mr Gulen. So, they advanced their plans to Friday night when Mr Erdogan was away on holiday in what would turn out to be a doomed attempt to catch the government before it caught them.
The report would explain why the events unravelled so quickly. “The beginning of the coup felt very rushed, but the planning of it was not. That's important,” Oktay Vural, MP from the nationalist opposition party MHP, told The Telegraph.

I don't think it has much to do with Islamism and more about absolute power. Erdogan continually pushes the boundaries of democracy to gain more power and with more power suppresses the opposition. With this failed coup, he has a trump card that he can use to eliminate all his enemies in one foul swoop, whether they were involved or not! No doubt the next step is to suspend democracy due to the threat from the revolutionists and ta-da! We have another dictator!
If a group of caged turkeys native to Turkey conspired to breakout, then it would be deemed:
A Turkey turkey coop coup.
Groan.

he has now declared a state of emergency meaning he can pass laws without the approval of parliament!
How to become a dictator:
Step 1: Become president! Check!
Step 2: Declare a state of emergency so you can pass laws without approval! Check!
Step 3: Repress all opposition! On Going!
Step 4: Pass a law to give the presedent supreme power!

I suspect many of his supporters may now be wondering what they've done.
