I've heard it a few places and I've got a mate with the 2.5 engine and his head gasket and ring went. Shame as I like the look of the hawkeye best. I agree some say they are fine and so say not. Not sure on the 27"

Scratch that it's a thread with bits of info on it. Either way I've made up my mind on a blobeye now. Fits my price range too and I think cheaper tax and insurance.

Here we go again, if you think a wrx is ****, then **** off, I'm interested in advice form wrx people, that's what I want. I don't want a fiat (fix it again tomorrow).. Trust me it's true. I used to be a car transporter and collected many new fiats straight from the boat that wouldn't start, had broken parts etc. Same with Alfa's. So I'll stick with a scooby wrx, if nothing else, when your punto is being picked up by a recovery truck I'll sale on by.

I'll say this once, IF YOU DONT LIKE WRX, THEN DONT COMMENT. I thought this would be a friendly forum as it seem to be the most popular, well since I've been on about a week and only one thread, there seems to be a lot of disrespectful scooby owners on here that (IMO) don't deserve one.

Sti's are great, gti's are great, st's are great etc, etc. I appreciate all fast cars, I just happen to like the wrx. Because you think your car is the best, doesn't mean it is! There is always a quicker car!
If anyone can find it, a guy I know had a rover 3.5 v8 sd1, he named it the beast, crap car you may think, trust me it would p*** all over sti's and this is a car from the 80's.

I ONLY WANT ADVISE ABOUT WRX THAT IS USFUL, ADVICE SAYING THEY ARE **** IS NOT USEFUL, PLEASE RESPECT MY THREAD AND IF YOU WANT TO TALK **** ABOUT WRX, MAYBE SPEND SOME MONEY AND CREATE A STI ONLY FORUM.

Ps my budget is in the £6000-£7000
I'm in my late 40s now and had been an admirer of Subarus for many years. The only thing that put me off buying one in the past as an everyday car was the fuel costs. However, I was looking for a summer use car only last year and bought a nice low mileage WRX SL blobeye with PPP. I like a quick car and I find it fun and a pleasure to drive and it's more than capable of holding it's own when out on A road runs with fellow Subaru owners in Sti models etc. No, the WRX wouldn't be as quick as the Sti model out on a track but it is more than quick enough for use on public roads. Go and search for one with the Prodrive Performance Pack that's been well looked after and you'll be well pleased. And all the better if you track down an SL version with full leather and electric sunroof. Hope this helps and I hope you find something that takes your fancy soon.

Finding a really mint SL will be hard. However, for your budget you're really looking at the top of the top WRXs. I have a 2003 WRX SL and it's great, I'm not sure I could live without the heated leather and sunroof, been using the sunroof alot recently!

Some people on this forum seem to only care about BHP and torque figures, and don't seem to understand that for alot of people, they just want a nice daily use car that will start each time they turn the key, and be fun without costing millions. Do yourself a favour, and completely ignore them.

Reality is that lots of people have had issues with both WRXs and STIs with 2.5 engines, with constant arguments about stock/mods etc. Truth be told, it's a design flaw that can cause trouble regardless of your power output. What you really want is a mint, low mileage 55 plate WRX SL. If you find one in red you've basically won the lottery.

Give it a chance mate, if you can see past a lot of the rubbish threads and useless comments, there's actually some very good info on here.

If you go to the User CP (in the yellow bar at the top) and click "edit ignore list" down on the side. You can add the names of users you don't want to see responses from and it blocks them out on your view.

Have you thought about sourcing a 2.0 Hawk from Japan? might be quicker than waiting for one to crop up online.

At the end of the day get the car you want the most. (I bought an Evo 4 instead of a 5 then a UK blob instead of a V-Limited ) I've just sold a mint 2.5 engine with barely any miles on it for £600 so a 2.5 isn't that bad if you put some money aside to address any issues.

Thanks for that, but it's way over budget for me. I really only want to stick to the £6-£7k. Ideally £6-£6.5k.

Hi, mate. As said above, there are lots of decent, knowledgeable guys on here, but unfortunately, there is also a disproportionate number of bellends compared to other car forums. On other sites, they would have been permabanned long ago, but on here, for some reason they are allowed to freely abuse and mock others, which sadly dictates the tone of many threads and the general culture of SN.

The worst thing about this site is all the WRX vs STi rubbish. Whatever anybody says, 2.0L WRXs are good, fun, reliable, quick cars, especially with PPP or a remap. You'd struggle to find a car with better performance and practicality for £5-6k. Any STi owner who criticises the WRX isn't a genuine Subaru enthusiast. Their typical comments include "poverty spec" or "couldn't afford an STi".

I own an Audi TT RS. Not once have I pointed out how much my car cost compared to, say, a blob widetrack STi. Why would I? If somebody owns a blob widetrack STi, it's probably because that's what they wanted to buy. It doesn't mean they couldn't have afforded a more expensive car. And even if they couldn't, what kind of lowlife mocks somebody for being in a less strong financial position than themselves. Furthermore, I am a member of several Audi forums, and not once have I ever read any TT RS owner ridicule a lower spec TT model, eg. TTS, 1.8T, etc. Not once - it just doesn't happen! And the discrepancy between the performance of a TT RS (340 bhp) compared to, say, a TT TDi (170 bhp?) is far greater than that of a WRX and an STi...

As has been said, this is generally a good site with lots of great info. Don't let the idiots put you off.

Nice way to put in uncle. Trouble is I bet daddy or bank manger paid for the sti's for the younger drivers. I know between 18-25 I couldn't afford a car like that and I had a well paid job. Especially the insurance.

STi's are great cars, but you've already stated your reasons why it isn't the right car for you. I'd recommend a blob WRX. Choose a clean, low mileage, well-maintained one, and I doubt you'll regret it. Decat, panel filter, fuel pump, remap = approx 280bhp. Fun, fast, reliable motoring!

I fully understand what you are saying. Ive only ever owed wrx's my last one was 336bhp and would make my friends 350ish blob sti look silly. My current blob wrx is about 290ish(decat, panel filter, perrin inlet etc) and holds it own with 320+ sti's upto 100mph that lets face it is stupid on roads. I love all subarus be it sports and foresters. Yes the sti might come out the box with 6speed box and brembo brakes but im a family man and with my bills and enjoying my holidays abroad then ill settle for what ive got. Yes i have fitted sti spoiler and my car does look like an sti without stick on roof vents and wrc replica stickers but its my car and im happy with it looks and performace wise at thats all that matters to me. There is alot of crap spouted with the constant my sti is better than your wrx or my jdm is better than your uk poverty sti or my spec c is better than your jdm etc. In a perfect world we should all offer good advice to each other cause we all here for the love of the brand.

I wonder what the difference in turn in feel would be between a 1280kg Newage with 5.8kg disks and a 1480kg Newage with 11.5kg disks?

I don't understand, if you have 6-7k why not hold out for an STI that's in budget. You won't have to worry about everything going wrong lol

Dont think the o.p is wanting an sti. He wanted advice on wrx's. 6-7k these days is lower end of sti's. Im not jumping on the wrx bandwagon here as i fully understand the benifits of going for a higher model. Bit like a ford enthusiast would love a focus rs but with his personal means would buy an st for sound and abit less perfomace in standard form. Ive not piped up on this thread to put anymore fuel on the fire just giving my personal opinion and thats all it is not facts. All cars suffer problems in any state of form i.e a wrx can destroy a gearbox but also sti's can develop a crunch from 4th to 5th when mildly modded. Its all swings and roundabouts and down to personal choice.

Yeah I can semi understand. Although you could get a good Bug STI for that money or even a higher miled well looked after blob. The WRX gearbox will **** it's pants, and if it's a Hawkeye WRX the whole car is going to **** the bed. Plus the amount of nice upgrades you have standard, 6speed, bigger turbo, injectors, brembos etc etc

Hey Matt. Regarding the former, the OP doesn't want an STi due to its more lairy styling. He prefers the subtle aesthetics of the WRX. Regarding the latter, the OP isn't bothered about big power. He'd be pleased with 260ish, so the WRX 'box will be fine at that state of tune.

A bug STI will be 15 years old! probably 5+ owners
He doesn't want high mileage or an STI, so why suggest a high mileage blob STI???

The hawk wrx gearbox is one of the stronger 5 speed boxes, can handle 380+ bhp

The hawk wrx is more reliable than the hawk sti

The sti is heavier, harder ride, worse mpg

FFS HE DOESN'T WANT AN STI!!!

What helps the op more - giving helpful advice or trolling about STI's?
