I have an R as a daily and can honestly say it's fantastic.
Nice interior, mod cons and dsg makes life super easy when cruising, town driving etc.
Plenty enough space for the kids but not enough for the dog unfortunately.
Goes extremely well to the point you forget you're in a golf but mine isn't a standard car anymore.
Cannot really comment on braking as mine are uprated now also.
I find it handles fantastically well with minor mods and I'd go as far as saying better than most imprezas I've driven.

As a daily car it's great,would I have one as a weekend toy,probably not.

Great every day cars, usual German interior quality, very fast point to point. But they are so common because of the lease deals, puts me off.

Even so, it's the deals that make em attractive - no comparable car can be had for similar money.

I have driven a friends R stock one on track. Felt great! Suspension is too soft for track, but great on potholed country lanes. Brakes were decent on track, no fade, although I didnt push it that far.

Lots of space, been in the back of it a few times as well and its very comfortable.

I'm just thinking if they are really worth the money aswell. I'm thinking about getting a mk5 edition 30 but they hard to find.

A lot of golf R's for sales cause they newer and easier to find a nice example.

Fast car, DSG great for traffic lights GP.

My Sti has K-Sports tho so i may be spoiled,

However after the map the stock golf R brakes were frightening.

Expected a lot more from the braking and handling,

I drove it like i stole it both times and it felt FWD when pushing on.

Sure i had ESP off too.
Interesting about the brakes as I was under the impression they are pretty much the same setup as the R32, and I'll reckon they are best standard brakes I've come across on a non-supercar. Apart from they require regular hard use to keep them working ok. Like all sliding-pin type calipers, they tend to stick and rust on the inner disc surface if previously driven round too much by a miss daisy, especially if the car is washed and not driven straight afterwards or stored outside without being driven daily, and once that happens they are F**ked (need new discs and pads). I've come across a lot of GTi's like this which causes massively reduced pad/disc contact area with obvious loss of hard braking performance, but "seems" ok during normal driving until you do a emergency stop a realise they are crap...new disc/pads/calliper-clean fixes it).

Hot and cold and I really do give them grief and not had any complaints, to be honest they've got me out the proverbial in a few emergency situations that I know if I were driving one my past cars (Monaro/NSX/scoob/BMW etc). I'd have crashed. I'm running genuine VW pads and discs too, and I can't seem to wear the damn things out either (although the wheels get plastered in dust just after s few days of driving). Apart from having to grind the lips off the edges discs to rectify a bit of pad knock-back that developed (I suspect my NSF wheel bearing is starting to wear) that's all I've ever done over 40,000miles.

Didnt mean to sound so harsh.
Maybey im just alot harder on the brakes than most folk.
I find Most stock brakes cook eventually after repeated use.
Never drive my scoob with stock brembos.
Can honestly say my 356mm ksports are one of the best mods on my car.

Can't comment on the Golf R, but I have a Mk5 GTI as my daily driver and I love it!
Interior is a nice place to be, and for a FWD car I'm very impressed by the handling. The steering is nicely balanced and gives good confidence.

Goes well, not in STI/Evo league but still good, i am looking at getting a re-map to improve that.

I'm in no rush to get rid of the Evo, but if I did I think I'd sell that and my current Golf for a newer model GTI with a few tweeks.

No it comes down to people never having driven a proper dsg car.

It's the future of performance cars hence why most of then have it.

Had one for over a year, it's running c360bhp and 330lbft and I absolutely love it.

- Is it as playful/light on it's feet as a Scoob? Nope, not quite.
- Can it be provoked into a slide? Yes, if you really try.
- Is it as effective on a cross country blast in Scotland as any Impreza I've driven? Yes, without a doubt.

...I've also had mine on track and the brakes were only just starting to fade after a good 15-20 hard laps at Knockhill, have changed to better fluid and going by reports on the Owners Club, I expect that fade to be non-existent now.

It's also bloody quick in a straight line (12.something 1/4 miles and 170mph+ top end), not that it was too shabby as standard, but the Stage 1 modifications have really beefed up the performance on it.

I no longer want to rattle/roar/shake down the road in a modified jap box as a daily, they're awesome as weekend cars and I'd never say that I'll not own another Scoob... but as a daily, the Golf is leagues ahead of even the newest Subaru, IMO.

Only problem is, what to replace the Golf with given that I will not have an automatic; which knocks out AMG and RS-Audis as well as most M-cars and S-Audis... only solution I keep coming back to is another Golf R, which as someone who likes changing cars, is a big statement.

Cheers,
Grant
