So, they've done it without Apple.

Will the FBI tell Apple how they did it?

Probably not. As ever, updating is a good idea, chances are the vulnerability doesn't exist in later versions.

I suppose that depends on the nature of the exploit and whether these are the first people to find it.

As it exists, and has never been reported, then it is entirely possible that Apple are unaware of it and so would not close it in a future release. It is possible that is has been closed in a future release, but not by design, per se.

Also, you cannot discount the possibility that Apple did, in fact, aid the FBI, and that Tim Cook was grandstanding.

I seriously doubt the last one and will add that that could have found a way to read and write the data on the chip somehow... seriously doubt this one too.

I doubt the FBI will say how it was done. Seems they asked Cellebrite to help them unlock the phone, so perhaps they (FBI) do not know exactly how the data was obtained from the phone, and Cellebrite isn't likely to reveal it, as it sells this tech (think the FBI was charged $15k) and so that would lose them business.

Apple did, I think, help in some respect. There was the situation regarding the iCloud backup, and Apple techs were helping in that situation. As for the changes the FBI requested, I very much doubt they helped on that at all. I seriously don't think Tim would be so public about encryption and such if in the background they were unlocking things.

This particular battle is over, but the war is still on going.
