That doesn't always work...
Since 1995 when I went self employed, I've not had a proper trade set holiday, this year I was determined to do it.
Didn't happen, but I've just finished today so only a day out

Self-employed peeps can take time off as per their wish and convenience, provided they wish to. Some decide to carry on working through the holidays in order to either continue earning, or to meet their pre-decided deadlines or else, and that's fine, as long as they're happy with that.

Break up tomorrow and go back 4th Jan. It's the first year I'll not be working Christmas Eve since 2006, and that was only because it fell on a Sunday, which lucky for me, I don't work.
Not sure what the future will hold for Christmas holidays, as our Managers have just been told they can't take any holidays in November or December next year, so maybe that 'rule' will apply to us down the line too.

Certainly from my own experience, when I was growing up in central London in the 70''s Christmas/boxing Day were like no other in terms of traffic and general feel
The place was deserted - quite eerie nothing open and no traffic (traffic was obviously less anyway) but I saw a real change in the 80's
No they seem not much quieter than a regular Sunday

So, deserted streets, but with the occasional bus mooching about lol

yeah
I suspect these "national" holidays (where pretty much everyone got a day off) are/will be a thing of the past
in reality they are holidays for the affluent middle classes and above (who still need to be able to buy fresh lime for the Guacamole salad)

Bet your missus is well pleased.
Academic Half Term week begins here this evening. I'm not entirely free but not as occupied either, so may use my holidays to chuck more than usual spanners here for the time being. Look forward to it.
