I really enjoyed it, but it was more than a nod.....
Opening sequence of large space ship over desert planet - tick
Something hidden in droid in desert planet - tick
Person of questionable parentage who it turns out has the force - tick
Evil Empire washes away last vestiges of republic - tick
Baddie in black and mask - tick
Huge space station with ability to destroy planets - tick
Space station has really dumb weakness - tick
Baddie confronts old master/father figure and kills him - tick
Huge rebel attack on spacestation to attack it's only weakness - tick
Main baddie is presumed dead, but probably isn't - tick
Even the title is in the same vein A New Hope - The Force Awakens, essentially the same hint, some unknown person (Skywalker/Rey) to bring back the light!
And not to forget all the nods to EPs V and VI.
Sounds like I didn't like it, but I really did, I thought he did an excellent job, just a cheeky bugger for remaking an old film!
If the next episode is called 'The First Order Hits back'................

the empire strikes back still does it for me
the planet Hoth scenes - with the Tauntaun's the EON cannon and the ice monster
the dagobah system
Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett
the flakey Millennium Falcon

As a standalone film definetly watchable but as a 7th installment it was poor imho. Can no one think of a new plot these days? Same as ep4 with better graphics. Rennwas fine until he removed his mask. Then turned into the worst purveyor of the dark side to date and a rookie with the lightsabre. He just didnt come across as evil which contrary to most I think Hayden Christensen portrayed well as Anakin.
Lukes lightsabre in the castle basement was predictable as was Ren taking out Dad.
Some Random theories out on the net that Rey could be obiwan's daughter. But think people are overthinking whats in front of them.
No real discussion of what happened since ROTJ. Other than Luke taking some other young jedi's under his wing only to lose the plot when Ben turned naughty.

Perhaps because she's female, perhaps because she showed no early force signs. Perhaps Han and Leia (who've clearly been apart for a while) split taking one child (twins) each. Just speculating. Would make more sense for her to be Lukes daughter - ended up there after Kylo killed the Jedis, would explain the flashbacks she got.

totally agree - I felt that too (literally a disturbance in the force)

Disney released footage of the game play for the force awakens infinity game and within it Kylo faces Ren and says face me cousin. Now if that's not a giveaway I don't know what is.

Went to watch this two nights ago. Dear me. What a poor effort of a film. Cracking production/effects etc. But the script/acting/plot are dire. A complete lack of imagination/flair. Tried to convince myself otherwise as I love and grew up on the franchise. But it's a money making man's dream now - all about the merchandise and ticket sales based on hype.

I thought the Grand Moff Tarkin characture was a bit weak too
did not seem old enough to be out of space cadet school let alone command a death planet
and a touch of "ginger" too - and no one takes them that seriously either

Watched this the other night,
Really not impressed with it,
Poor acting, poor storyline and wtf is with all the comedy one liners.
The score and sfx were good, but this film is just a cash cow.

Watched it at the Cardiff IMAX last night: ok, so as a piece of art one could level all sorts of criticism at it, Star Wars' commentary on good and evil is always interesting and flawed, but as simple entertainment I thought it was tremendous!
