so does the wrx, this is due to only having 5 gears.

this is the only reason the wrx is similar to the sti up to 60, due to the sti having to change to third just before 60.

look at the times after 60 the extra gear and power puts the sti streets ahead

TBH I'm usually changing to 3rd at around 58mph. Often clipping the limiter (raised to 7500 on mine). There's a lot of people all over the net that talk about ratios making the STI slower to 60.

you need third to get to 60 although at the same bhp the sti is still faster.

got my engine pegged at 7300rpm for safety, but can run to 8000rpm quite safe,

my 2nd gear speed could be over 70 if i tried

RS Matt I have always been quite intrigued with your Defence of the WRX its quite admirable,but ask me this one simple question,Why did Subaru send the WRX model car to their STI works division in the first place?Was it not to make the WRX a faster better handling,braking,tougher transmission,more performance focused car,even better then the existing WRX model was in the first place or was it just to make a slower car with a pink STI badge on it.I personally think that the whole argument (discussion)is over nothing as all the facts and history is already there at Subaru.SJ.

I have read the classic WRX had to be detuned to save blushes...

...but... I believe the STI is set up for track conditions, so speed is secondary, totally different focus to something like a Mustang GT, ergo speeds ranging from 50-120. Stronger box to perhaps deal with temperatures rather than torque and pretty much the same with the larger disks and pistons. As a side effect low down acceleration is compromised, especially when tuned. Wheel spin, need for slick quick changes and transmission losses all become an hurdle. That's why nearly all drag times posted by WRX's are only matched by STI that have around 20% extra power. Launch control does seem to help.

I've always theorised a maxed out WRX with 350/350 (rods, rings & box) will push a maxed STI (bottom end) with 450/450, beyond those power reaches I believe both cars would benefit from a stronger 5 speed box.

That said, the ratios shouldn't be an issue if the US ratios are the same as the UK ratios going by the link Tommy found to get his "approx" guess of 56mph. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/general-...each-gear.html

So basically both great cars burdened by the box. I think the problem is on SN I view the cars from a drag/straight line/traffic light perspective were a lot of STI owners are more track/cornering inclined. So the debating is counter productive.

I'm flattered you boys took the time to search for those old threads, they have made me chuckle too.

Still missing the points though, and I love the way you take every post out of context and turn it around.

I think that anyone with an ounce of common sense would realise that in the real world once cars are on the move you need a very considerable power advantage and the ability / opportunity to use it to be leaving any car that has a decent chassis and a good power to weight ratio being driven by a half decent experienced enthusiast type driver.

Thing is I don't think I'm anything particularly special in the driving department but those that know me have always conceded that I'm a better driver, I just think it's because it's something I have always been 'in to' and interested in from a very early age.

It's also helped by the fact that I have probably covered considerably more miles on country roads in cars due to 20+ yrs of an average of around 1000 miles a week in company cars, my main areas being Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, any of you that have driven around those areas would know that there are a hell of a lot of good driving roads.

Just try and imagine what I was driving like when there were no speed cameras, not much in the way of radar traps, in cars that didn't belong to me and the petrol / diesel was paid for with deadlines to get from one job to the next and there generally being around 4/6 jobs a day.

Oh and I was around 19 when I got my first company car. and that was 30yrs ago.

Along side that because I had company cars for so many years I usually had a motorbike of some description, off road in the early days then road and track bikes later on through my early 20's and 30's.

Now I don't expect any of you to believe a certain amount of what I write here, because even I struggle to believe it sometimes, but I also quit work at 42 moved to a different country, where I didn't speak the language, bought a house in the in the middle of nowhere and I'm currently turning it into 3 apartments.

So yes my life is and always has been a little different to the ordinary existance/ experience that most have since the day I was born, and like I have said before, I put it down to not feeling as though I belong to one group or another because of my mixed heritage, so always went my own way and did my own thing.

All this bull crap that I get on here from some of you guys is nothing new to me, I have had it all my life, I'm different to most people, always have been, always will be, it's always p1ssed a certain type of people off and always made me smile and dig that little bit deeper, fight that little bit harder and continue to do things differently.

Do you actually understand what is meant by the term 'sleeper'? 'Cus it's not something that can be applied to something with; a big wing, bonnet scoop and Subaru badges (either WRX or STi).

 

Out of box, the only 'true' impreza 'sleeper' is the SpecD

Yeah it's not as in your face as the average STi but it's not really a sleeper is it. Gold brake calipers and a bonnet scoop aren't particularly subtle.

If it's sleeper you're after then whip the boot spoiler off, paint the calipers black and fit the bonnet from one of these.

To more accurately sum this crap thread up. No body actually knows what this thread is all about and it's full of rubbish.

 

 

I had a WRX PPP back in the day, often recorded 35+ MPG and mine was far faster than a mates STi

The problem with the STi is the low gearing, he had to change gear 3 times to get to 60 and then he ran out of fuel and had to stop at the petrol station.


I also upgraded the pads to Mintex 1155's, which improved MPG no end, plus the prodrive springs made the car more streamlined adding another 2.2MPG.
In the end my unmodded WRX PPP could beat most cars on the road, including many high end supercars, which was very pleasing for me, but highly embarrassing for them.


I've just ordered a Focus RS which by all accounts is faster than any Subaru on the road, so stick that in your Scooby back pipes and smoke it

It still wont be a sleeper. Imo a real sleeper by definition is a car with a engine swap from another more powerful more heavy model. And that looks fairly standard. E.g redtop nova/ corsas vvc metros etc etc
