Good memory, also been a waiter, worked as a bar man and drove a taxi at weekends, all at the same time, fitted a few suspended ceilings and now I help a mate out here sometimes with concrete floors, did a 130m2 driveway on friday, 2 cement trucks worth 13 cubic metres.

Similar money to lift engineering tbh but the heaviest thing I picked up was my tool box, which was a lot nicer than humping guides into a lift shaft or the hand balling all the lift parts off a wagon, then everything you touch is dirty and cold, working on muddy building sites in winter in buildings with no doors or windows and it's not dangerous, oh yeah you know what it's like, and that's before you go and rip an old one out and put a new one in, what a great job lift engineering is.
I did actually quite like it though.

Have to agree there too, the look on some peoples faces, who think it's a boggo WRX, when you leave them like they're going backwards..

Kind of I suppose, I just did what ever came my way to earn a crust, I'm not too proud to take any job, better than being on the dole, begging for hand outs is not my style, I can turn my hand to pretty much anything if I put my mind to it, it's called having a work ethic, with a bit of practice anyone can do anything if they have the will to learn and work.

Ergo a STI driver might launch next to a WRX with external mods but will feel he can smoke what he thinks is a relatively stock WRX with a casual take off when sat next to a WRX with no obvious external modifications.
Is Andy F's record breaking Impreza a WRX RA or a 1994 STI?

I wonder if my 307 lbft WRX can beat a Spec C with a *babied launch (*SN's members comments) not to mention the track was damp and my budget tyres full of mud!
Right, this is a biggy, let's watch the comparison test to see if a WRX with less torque and inferior box/driver/track conditions can beat the "greatest Newage of all time."

Well I didn't say "my" I said "a" ...if that half answers your question.

I used to leave STI's in the twisties by dropping my car into 1st around sharpish bends! Not good for any of the components but it worked. That's the beauty of the WRX though, warped disks or shagged transmission parts and it's twice as cheap to fix or less than the STI. So far in 7 years of WRX ownership I've only suffered 1 flat battery, 2 sticky brake piston cylinders, 5 shock absorbers and 18 split CV's boots

I've made it look like an STI was the joke. TBH the WRX is bloody awful with 225bhp, unless you launch it at red line everywhere you go.

I don't tend to corner hard or anything. Car ride height is pretty conservative, apart from the week Tweaks fitted coilovers.

What was this thread originally about? I've seriously forgotten what with all the WRX v STi bashing, Ditchy's 'I can do all the things' posts and the 'my car is a sleeper with a big-*** bonnet scoop' mentions...

As much as my initial post was in jest, I've gotta agree with you there. This countries lost site of the value of someone who's good with their hands and can get things done.

Then they start with all the attacking, personal insults and attempt to dis-credit via calling BS on other things I have said over the years, like having been a lift engineer for a short spell, which is what Jayallen does for a living, you'll notice how he shuts up about it now because he knows from the things I say that I have done it, simple things that most wouldn't know unless they'd been in the business, like putting it into test mode and operating it from a car top control box, checking the safety gear, ropes etc when servicing one.
Point being, everything I say I have done, I have and for some reason it erks them, maybe they're missing something in there lives, who knows.
Thing is people you can do it too, anything is possible, you just need the right frame of mind and to be open to a challenge, willing to learn and not be afraid to ask questions that may make you look stupid.
I have only ever been out of work for very short spells at a time because I get off my **** and go look for something, anything, consequently I have walked out on a few jobs, been sacked a couple of times and told the boss to stick it where the sun don't shine once or twice, so that's why I have had quite a few different jobs and been self employed 3 times over 30yrs of working, I'm a grafter but I take no **** from people either, life's too short and the working week too long to take crap from people everyday.

I'm not into bashing WRX's as I was happy with mine and it suited what I wanted from it at the time.
In stock form there's not much in a straightforward 0-60 between the two cars. Depending on the driver the WRX may even shade the STi to 60mph. That's where the similarities end.
The WRX may be a tad more comfortable, slightly more economical, and generally cheaper to run.
The STi has a few refinements that the WRX doesn't have (shift light, coolant spray etc). It has more engine power, a stronger gearbox, better suspension, better brakes, higher top speed (if that's your thing), and so on.
None of this is a surprise to anyone with their eyes open.
However where things start to get heated is when folk start confusing standard cars with cars that have any kind of performance enhancement over a standard basic model. Things like PPP and remaps have bu99er all to do with like-for-like comparisons unless they are equally applied to both models.
A WRX with PPP or a re-map will probably be as quick as a standard STi.
However once you apply those same criteria to the STi you're going to be back where you started.
A decat/remap on a WRX will get you around 280bhp.
Do the same to an STi and you get anything between 340 and 350bhp.
If you're going to say that a remapped/PPP WRX is as quick as an STI, you may as well say you can strip 100 kilos of weight out of the STi and the standard WRX will never get near it.
You have to compare apples with apples.

TBH just 5.1 fluid and braided hoses got rid of the (3 minutes of fast driving) brake fade.
Pad and disk upgrade doesn't cost the earth. I think both the STI and WRX benefit from a change in suspension too.

That said I don't have a problem admitting that the STI is a stronger base for modding and makes a better track car if that's your thing, because it's obviously true, personally I don't like the ride, styling, gearing or turbo characteristics, which are it's achilles heel, add to that knocking suspension seized caliper bolts, dodgy syncro's and they're not such a great prospect as they once were, basically they're not quite as mighty as some would bang on to all newbs and insulting the WRX and not even taking an OP's, budget or requirements into account, it's always buy the STI or you'll regret it.
I have had 2 WRX's a Forester and an STI and tbh the one that broke and probably only one I regret (a little bit) is the STI.

Well for my part, it's the WRX bashers that can't or don't seem to want to accept that a PPP or re-mapped WRX could be equally as quick as an STI or dare I suggest leave one behind.
