If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to worry about. It works both ways. I would bet money that a fair few possible terrorist attacks have been foiled by GCHQ etc scouring Facebook and other social media websites (amongst other surveillance methods obviously).

 

Presumably you would have no problem with a video camera in your home watching your every move

I'm a big supporter of fb for the Buisness I run
6000 followers every week I advertise products and fetch in recorded sales of 2k+ per week compared to preciously spending 20-35 k per annum on newspaper and tv
And I boost pages for a measly £3 it's a bargain

To wonder our local newspaper has put up its ticket Price and advertising rates
and now it's too expensive to advertise for small companies so it's a slippery slope for newspapers
I'm glad I don't sell advertising

Fb yes it's got a dodgy image akin to chavs and Jermany Kyle audience sort of people but it's useful to millions
I keep in touch with the boy in Australia daily and relatives overseas all the time and great to see photos of what is happening in thier lives

Swapping photos and daft jokes amd news is a lot easier and more modern then picking up the phone

Very useful for networking in my part time position and council work too to get messages to people

Yes it's killing forums like this but that's life and progress

No, I believe the state has a FAR BETTER CHANCE of protecting me. People slip through the net, and always will, but if 'giving up' privacy means a paedofile ring getting smashed, or a bombing of a public event getting stopped, then so be it. If the men in black want to tap my phone, scour my Facebook or follow me in the street, then so be it. I won't know they're there, and nor would you, so just accept that it happens, and the reasons why. Whether you like it or not, big brother is watching and he's here to stay

About that Benjamin Franklin quote, It's very positively suited to your attitude. I had that quote on my wall since I was in school and still remains on my wall here; in my house office room. It balances me, and I find it applicable to many things in my life.

The other quote I have on my house office wall (not Facebook wall or as my Facebook status. I don't find the need to declare my preferences on internet every so often, although I'm doing it right now in this post.
