Should we take on more assylum seekers

it suites people with agenda's to simply label everyone as migrants - it sort of relieves us of any morality in these discussion
I believe at the very least, we should act with compassion regarding refugees and meet our legal and moral obligations
do we share some responsibility in creating this mess in the middle east - well I would say yes, our foreign policy (arms sales etc) i.e. meddling has been a disaster for many years in this region
and this crisis shows that things are coming home to roost

OK, we move forward and have separated the chancers from those in real danger. I would accept an appropriate number on the basis of temporary protection until such time as they can be returned to their country of origin. I don't believe any country should have to accept any permanently unless they choose to do so.
The problem as I see it is that you will have enormous difficulty proving your refugees are genuine (because so many aren't) and whatever the outcome, only those migrants with skills are without burden.
The whole situation is a clusterf@ck however you look at it, but one thing is for sure - you make it anything other than difficult and there'll be a lot more coming.

It's no different than many other topics argued over on here.
Benefits.
Muslims.
Immigrants.
Even homosexuals in a roundabout way.
The p@ss-takers spoil it for the rest, who may well be honest, genuine, decent or whatever else. Political correctness often results in a softly-softly approach to the issue and a large proportion of the population becomes fed up with the lot of them. The milk is soured, too much trouble, boll@cks to the lot of them.

Which has been my point in the similar thread about the ex-eastern Bloc countries:
The media has wilfully fudged the actual demographic of the refugees/migrants, so no-one in the UK has any idea what, or who, they really are.
Further to this, they have created waves of sympathy for a group, the most part of which, deserve no such sympathy, and a small part of which just might end up as a danger to national security.
And this at a time when the general population are being told every month or so that new legislation is needed to curb the security dangers....new legislation which almost always erodes OUR freedoms.

How about the freedom to enter an aircraft without having had to remove your shoes?
How about the freedom to take fluids on board an aircraft?
How about the freedom to have phonecalls, texts etc be private?
The bl**dy terrorists are winning...they create terror which makes US change our ways of doing things, inconveniences US.

You will always get the p1ss takers, scrounges, freeloaders, lunatics, ne'er-do-wells in every race, colour, creed and socio economic group
The con, the line we have been fed, is that you HAVE to design EVERY system around them
The lowest common denominator
The latest round of benefit/tax credits cuts are a classic example
In fact Quite a few conservatives politicians absolutely know these cuts will cause real hardship for a lot (the majority) of really hard working families - not scroungers not people spunking tax payers money up the wall ***** nilly - like some politicians
But ordinary people, hard working people, people with jobs, two jobs sometimes

no, but the problem is - as demonstrated by this thread the term migrant and refugee seemed to be used interchangeably when discussing this issue - and any complete answer is difficult

Some serious fcuktards on here lately, wake up and smell the coffee.
Oldest trick in the book, divide and conquer, they do it over and over again, yet still the masses just don't get it.

As Zip106 memorably put it on the 911 thread

It only takes the gullible to believe it."

Interesting read on the immigration situation in Sweden. Over there it's pretty much outlawed to even question mass immigration, and obviously as a result they receive a vast amount of third world immigrants. No doubt hodgy0_2 friends would love the UK to become like this.
Going to be an interesting few decades ahead for Europe. Maybe it'll become a big socialist utopia with everyone living in perfect harmony like one big happy family and all the liberals shouting "told you so!" or maybe we're in for huge trouble ahead as debt-ravaged and increasingly divided countries with ludicrously unsustainable welfare states face social unrest on a massive scale.

Sounds like bliss!

In Sweden, where equality is revered, inequality is now entrenched. Forty-two per cent of the long-term unemployed are immigrants, Mr. Sanandaji said. Fifty-eight per cent of welfare payments go to immigrants. Forty-five per cent of children with low test scores are immigrants. Immigrants on average earn less than 40 per cent of Swedes. The majority of people charged with murder, rape and robbery are either first- or second-generation immigrants.

This is damming indictment for your indigenous Swedes efforts !
~ the figures should be no where near 50%
Sweden has a large programme working /development in Africa ,which is one reason for the numbers Africans in Sweden , clearly you can't abide with this

So I guess you see Europe ending up as some sort of socialist utopia dpb? You think vast numbers of unskilled migrants can be easily assimilated into communities and provide a positive contribution to economies?

It's hardly comparable to the current situation?! The British Empire benefited Britain because it brought additional resources from the colonised countries which could be used or sold for profit, a source of cheap labour (I guess this is the comparison you are making?) and additional taxation.
The current wave of mass unskilled immigration doesn't bring us any additional physical resources, we get extra unskilled workers, but these are hardly needed, and quite the opposite of the Empire the additional people are an additional drain on our finances.
