is it possible to fit these without fully removing the gearbox, say if I took the brace off and just pushed it back off the engine and lowered it down a bit?

You have never had a fight with a impreza gearbox have you? :-) it's very unusual for them to come off easily and even more unusual for them to go back in easily. I'm not sure you would get enough room for the bolts but maybe... We need somebody to try! Mine are going on a removed box so can't help there.
I did mine last week not going to lie was a pain with gearbox in.
Ive got both engine and gearbox frames removed and a brace over the top of the engine holding it up and i still had to tilt the gearbox very far down and had to twist the engine slightly to get the bolts in so yes can be done but if you have the gearbox and engine frames it would be near on impossible
I have looked at these before and wondered if they would help cure the issues of trying to engage 3rd gear when driving the car hard?! I have fitted a quick shifter and the poly bush and this has made changes more precise but still difficult to engage 3rd when pushing on. Car is running 320bhp but has always done this even before upgrades,
Probably the same people that buy strut braces bigger anti roll bars updated bushes etc. They all strengthen chassis as this will strengthen the gearbox casing. It's a well known fact that any more than 350 lbs of torque the casing distorts and 3rd gear loses its correct mesh and strips. The TY52 box has a weaker casing than the TY54 this will strengthen the casing it's akin to using bigger engine stud to stop the heads lifting.

You do know that the Moore Performance plates which these are copied from were tested on an uprated gearset? Anyway, fools and their money and all that.
Fitted the plates. Easy job with gearbox out. One minor 'problem' the bolts are a bit too long. They hit the gearbox tunnel. So best is to cut them of against the nut before u put the box back in its place to avoid damage to the anti corrosion coating and platework.
