WHY are we in the UK obsessed with houses?

I don't get it either and it bores the living **** out of me how much people bang on about it.
Much better overseas where they care about more interesting stuff.
I heard that someone in London (via radio) with £100k salary can't afford a house anywhere near where she needs to be - it's bloody insane. But it makes people feel rich (when they are often right on the edge of going bust), allows them to boast about how clever they are and keeps the trades in business.
In our situation, the banks can naff right off - we're doing things our own way and should hopefully buy a house soonish outright (the wheels are in motion). Will I bang on and on about it? No, I'll live in it and be pleased we "beat" the broken system we are suffocated by.
Meanwhile we rent a nice place by the sea and laugh at the second home w4nkers that pretend they own the place. For two weeks a year.

I agree the subject can be tedious but how do you think you will have beaten the broken system? And why do you think that second home owners 'pretend' they own it?
And lastly, I'm assuming you understand that unless there are 'second home w4nkers' you wouldn't be able to rent their place for the two weeks of the year which you enjoy.

Every night on the TV, no matter what channel you choose, there's some **** selling, buying, doing up, choosing, wrecking, DIY-ing, being helped to choose, doing up to sell...houses..............I'm utterly sick of it...and last night I saw yet ANOTHER format on the same tired old crap..........

I checked out 10 minutes of a new show called Desi Rascals on TV lately; simply out of curiosity. Body image conscious Asians talking in Essex accent (I think it was Essex accent), because obviously, they are bread and born here. OK, but it is another pathetic reality TV programme that offers 0 stimulation value to me, and it was quite embarrassing to watch that crap. Some may like this sort of sh7t, so no offence intended.

Not a regular TV watcher here, but I notice that although the gardening shows have calmed down, the TV is still full of house related shows and cooking programmes. TV seems to be possessed with the basic needs enhancement display. Talent shows and reality shows are also of the type that they wouldn't even stimulate a fly! One could switch over to the documentary channels, I suppose. Or, people can settle to have a visual feast of 'things' with improved technology on the repeat on the shopping channel, and may believe that they have crawled up a bit on the hierarchy ladder within the same 'basic needs' box.

Christ!
SS's fault. She was talking about the bread loaf, which must have got stuck in my mind.
Sorry.

Our landlord has lived here most of his life. He lives just up the road.
Beating the system? We won't have lived in some horrible dump, desperately crawling up the ladder, we will have worked for our money rather than proclaiming at every opportunity how much our house has gone up, we will have lived where we want, when we want. We will have been able to move at short notice for big opportunities. We will not have wasted weeks on end doing painfully dull DIY. We won't have joined for any of that cr4p that millions see as the British Dream but to us, it's a bloody nightmare.

I think it is simply a combination of the home being a "castle" and the perception that you can make serious money from them
And in certain parts of the country that is absolutely true
I was having lunch in london today with an old friend, he is moving to what looks like a lovely part of France (il de re)
He is selling up, a nice, but nothing special 4 bed in Wandsworth - been advised to put is on the market for 1.75 million
He paid 240k in 1995 (the mortgage was often covered by tennants - in fact he ended up marrying of them, so an added bonus is that his living cost were of peanuts)
No that is over a million quid 100% tax free
Not bad going - and when the buyers solicitors deposits the money in his account, that is real money

Price of property continues to rise, quicker that the rate of your savings, so the money you have stashed away is effectively worth less reducing your opportunity to live where you want when come to buy, or if you do buy where you want to live then face getting less for your money. And how often do you move for big opportunities though? Also there is nothing wrong with a bit of DIY, it's quite satisfying and there's nothing wrong with taking a bit of pride in fixing/maintaining/improving your home.

I'd rather go surfing, cycling, play with the kids, countless other stuff.
I don't actually care if it's not 99% of people's idea of the right thing to do; to me, just not being a tedious house bore sheep is worth a lot of money.
Thanks for the "education" though but believe me, our master plan should soon work saw treat. I'm glad we hung on.

Still doesn't explain how it is "beating the system". It's not as if all those activities you enjoy will stop after buying property.

It's like my eldest said, the other day: what did we THINK we were going to get for programming when uour channel list shot up from five to two hundred?
Repeats, repeats of repeats, American pap, and cr@p...that's EXACTLY what we get.

I've also coined a term for daytime TV as "Alzheimer's TV"
Pardon the expression, but this is the term I use for TV shows where after every advert break, they spend a few minutes reminding you of what happened over the last 10 minutes.

The value of our houses might be our religion but owning other peoples house is our primary economic goal. We've gone from an economy that makes stuff to being about a zero sum game of trying to stick your hand in someone elses pocket, conveniently dressed up in self-righteous discourses of 'investment' and 'bettering yourself' which allow is to shaft someone with no threat to our own conscience. It's really the worst development in Britain since I left school.

The world we live in. Conscience is often compromised in an individualistic society.

So yet again you're planning on using your own money for an outright purchase, which is admirable, personally I'd take on a small mortgage and up-size as a means of gaining greater capital growth as the old rule of thumb is that house prices double every 10yrs so that small mortgage pays you a very large dividend over the long term.
My own experience is the perfect example, £50k mortgage, house sold 9yrs later for £198k no amount of saving on a £20k salary would have see me with that sort of cash in the bank over the same period. Then with that cash I bought one house out-right and used some of the cash as a deposit on another. the one I own out-right has quadrupled in value over 10yrs and the one with a mortgage has gone up by roughly 70%.
The original £50k has netted me in the region of £300k+ in 19yrs, and counting, not a huge amount of money but way more than I would ever have been able to save during the same period.
Now I know this will be seen by some as me "***** waving" and frankly I don't care, there are plenty on here that will laugh and think it's peanuts too.
But the point I'm trying to make to you is, I beat the system in my own little way, but "you've got to be in it to win it" standing outside pointing fingers isn't winning.
Sorry matt but your logic and economics are flawed, as you've still been lining the pockets of the bankers or someone during your renting period, you just don't have anything to show for what you put in, and while your money has been in the bank they've been using it to make more money.
And I'm not having a dig, just a discussion.
