Can you have a word with my local cops please as I've had two run ins recently where I've been stood next to the car and they both told me it against the law for it to be running without someone behind the wheel.

How does leaving a hot turbo, engine, exhaust and cooling system running even longer than required cool it down better than a gentle cruise for a minute at 60mph with plenty of wind and engine revs, oil and coolant flowing round and through the engine and cooling system?
Is it ok to trash the nuts off your car and stop and let it heatsoak, cooking your engine and turbo as the cooling fan struggles to cool a hot engine that is getting hotter as it's still running! The exhaust and turbo are only going to get hotter

On the subject of leaving engine running leaving the car unattended, I parked outside a bank to post a letter through the letter box at 5am before I headed to London, important letter for buying a house.
I was never more than a meter from the car, I left the engine running, I was going to be about 15 seconds. A police officer appeared from nowhere and fined me for abandoning the vehicle. Had to wait 30 minutes for a police car with on the spot fine tickets, the bloke I worked with left and I lost a days pay!

If on private land it is not abandoning the vehicle but on public land or where public has general access to then a bored police officer could fine you!

You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

Finally found the relevant section.

Leaving an unattended vehicle with the engine running is called 'Quitting'.

According to a 'Consumer Action Group' website found via Google, Quitting is dealt with by Regulation 107(1) of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulation 1986 (S42 of the RTA 1988)

Regulation 107(2)(a). This states that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licenced to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set.
