Thought at least a few would pretend that they will go then drop out.

It had quite a lot of sentimental value to him etc etc - he took out European recovery, but when he really read the small print, the cover did not automatically mean that the company would recover the car - if they deemed it too expensive they would pay the "market rate" for the car and recover the occupants

Just be careful - oh and have fun!!!!!!!!, looks amazing - European roads are awsome

In which case, I bet if you offered to meet part of the recovery cost, they'd play ball. Don't forget most people on holiday aren't petrolheads, and wouldn't give a toss if an old car got abandoned. I'd ask all the questions before leaving, exactly as you suggested..
