I watched Birdman this week. A very quirkey, funny and sometimes difficult film to watch. An epic performance from Micheal Keaton. Ed Norton is pretty good but as a cameo, Lindsay Duncan nails it.

A sad tail about mental illness, how it can effect Micheal Keaton's character and all those around him.

Unbroken was pretty good and depicted the brutality of the Japs pretty well. A really good uplifting ending too.

I watched Paranormal Activity: Marked ones last night. It started ok with a bit of a Chronicle feel but then too much started happening and the fear factor went.

Men behind the son and Philosophy of a knife depict unmentionable Jap cruelty too.

Reading this thread is interesting. I think most people are pretty happy with run of the mill movies, the bland fodder that Hollywood churns out, but some seek out something a little different, be it an independent horror or a drama from a foreign land or just something quirky and different.

Persoanlly I can't for the life of me work out why anyone would classify a movie like Robocop as anything other than average at best, but obviously I am in a minority on here.

Some of the best movies are ones you expect little of, but then deliver in spades.

I remember years ago sitting down to watch Three Colours: Blue expecting a well meaning, but slightly slow paced film based on some of the early reviews and being blown away by it and then the two other movies that followed were the same..... I love it when that happens and it rarely happens with anything made in Hollywood. The Dark Knight is the last Hollywood movie that I came away from knowing I'd seen something really special.

I just think that we're all different; with different tastes and different preferences.

I liked Starred Up last night. It was a film I didn't want to end. Brilliantly staged.

On one occasion, it reminded me of what Donni Andi recently said here on NSR on a thread. It's when the therapist says in a group session something along the lines that black, brown, white, African or Jew; everyone is a C for................you know what.

Philosophy of a knife I haven't finished as of yet though as is a very long film. Very strange watch.

Try ichi the killer (uncut) again very strange but a great watch.
One of the hardest films I ever saw was "a Serbian film" I'm glad I watched it but will never watch again. Good gore with one of the maddest twists Iv ever seen........Horrific content. Bought it from hmv too.

I read a really encouraging review about this. Should have got an oscar nomination according to review. I'm waiting for it to appear on my BT rental list.

One day, when they have run out of names for the latest Ponzi scheme, this will happen. I'll watch it purely for comparison. I'm sure lovers of the original Thing hated the 80s version just like I hated the rip off of my rip off

I also hope Jaws is left as is but one day, Spielberg won't be with us, and I can see that getting done. It'll never be as magical though. Any film with a John Williams soundtrack is magic!

I have Ichi, hard-coded subtitles to it this aft, not watched it yet though.

I watched Inner Demons tonight, the low budget made for TV feel really catches you off guard. Not to mention the OMG ending.
I've never jumped so much in my life.

Just watched the trailer, looks good!,,
If you liked inner demons then try the "possession of Michael king" proper in your face freaky/jumpy. I had to import from the states I couldn't buy it in the uk.

I'll give it a go, tbh I prefer spooky films but the wife judges a scary film by the jumps!

Neither of us find gore or killer films scary. I think most people judge a film scary on those factors alone.

Checked out the trailer on youtube, looks ok. I love found footage films. I've not really seen a bad one yet.

Noticed a linked film called The Gracefield Incident that looks like it will be very very scary.

Right, I'll once again trust you and give this one a go. If this turns out to be a 'meh', then I'll make sure I make you jump!

Good title, and I hope the film does some justice to it.

Also, that Lucy is being sold for a tenner each in supermarkets etc. I suggest to people not to buy it just yet. Either wait for it to come out on Netflix or buy it when it's down to 3 quid. I'm not saying it's such a bad film (it is, to me), but it certainly isn't worth 10 pounds.

Watched half of Lucy tonight and turned it off as it's bland nonsense. Think I will have to try Starred Up as it seems well rated.

Not bad. Worth a look....
A film has to be fairly good to keep me still for more than an hour and this kept me interested.

Why are there a few films called Broken, and they're all from 2012 onwards? There's one made in 2012 by Rufus Norris, another one is a Korean film, and this one by madam Jolie. I hear that the Jolie one is a good one, with the same boy as Starred Up, but couldn't she use her imagination to find any other name for her film i.e. Shattered or Damaged or Smashed or even Lamped? It's confusing with so many Broken knocking about on internet.

I haven't watched any of them, and I do look forward to watching the Jolie one.

Oh, I thought it was Broken again; like a broken record. Sorry.

I do like some of the films you have suggested. I will certainly be watching this UNBroken directed by AJ.
