I didn't know enough about your line of questioning to comment.
I've done done digging and have learned more.
I also looked up "Quran" and "violence"; targeted learning/understanding. Read a bit more and I have some idea. No expert of course but more empathy and understanding than your average anti Muslim/whatever right wing yob.

You don't have to be an expert to have a working knowledge.

Well that's a pleasant surprise, I had you down as a bit of a tit in the Australia hostage thread but it's a refreshing change to see a more open minded Atheist. It's a similar outlook to the one I apply to religion and I find it deeply irritating when people hide behind Atheism as a good excuse to bash religion.

You're right, I've not run a country, but I did study politics at degree level.

I'd just like the arguments to be cogent. I'd settle for that.

Fair enough. Do you now see how there's a mandate for violence in the Qur'an?

Depends in what context you take it. But yes, I can see how it can be interpreted as promoting violence.

Yet more people losing their lives due to religion. Ultimately religion boils down to something written in a few books & this is how serious people take it? Come on for **** sake, theres a whole world out there to see, stop wasting life on a bloody book!

A lot depends on how one defines 'defence'. If you're 'defending' Islam, then you have 'just cause' for violence.

It gives a little context to the aforementioned verses. Violence and aggression has no place in society, that's my opinion and the author comes to the same conclusion.

I notice the gent's a Sufi, an order deeply opposed by the Salafist and Wahhabi and Deobandi. I agree with his interpretation and yours, but alas the latter do not and they represent a massive majority.

Makes a change from a stray missile fired by a US/Coalition Drone.

And guess what? Other than taking your new found faith and shoving it up your *** there is nothing you can do about it... at all...!

Over 100 children have been murdered today and all you can do is troll about your supremacy. You disgust me.

You obviously need to take off the blinkers and have a look at the BIG picture and try seeing things from BOTH sides of the situation.

I don't agree with any of it and if it were up to me followers of all religions would be dropped into an active volcano because they're all so full of **** it's un-beliveable much like the religions they follow.

The only ridiculous thing I can see is that grown adults living in the mordern world still believe all this bollax and are prepared to kill one another because of said beliefs which are only superseded by the idiocy and irony of them all actually believing essentially the same thing then going against it's teachings and killing one another.

The thing theists have in common is that they believe in a God. If I were to suggest that all atheists believe "essentially the same thing", I'm sure there'd be objections, and rightly so. As an example, are you genuinely of the opinion that the philosophical teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and Mohammad are the same?

TBH, I haven't looked into either enough to be in a position to give you the sort of answer your after, and I never will because I have more important things to do than read fairy tales.

If people want to believe religion that's fine by me, it's the forcing it onto their children and the rest of the outside world I don't agree with. All of the things they say and do seem to me to based in a time long since past, all I see is many forms of barbarism, bullying, intimidation and abuse by all concerned no matter the religion, they're all as bad as one an other.

Well, if the same thng is believing in a supernatural being who created everything, and then have the punishment of eternal damnation for not following, then yes.

The teachings of Jesus and Mohammed are still about control and subservience, under the flim flam.

The only commonality that atheists have is that they do not believe God (any god) exists. That is not to say some atheists are extremely unpleasant and display the very worst things they point out in theists.

We are all human, after all, and that really is the crux of the problem.

Poor kids They are innocent and have no care or desire for politics or wars.

What the **** is wrong with this planet eh. Bless them.

Remember we have been here before with the Syria attacks and all those dead children. I know I will be lynched for saying this but its true - religion in general causes problems. No matter what faith or belief, the end product is profit and war.
Sorry if my opinion offends anyone.

Ok, it's just that you said to another poster that they needed to:

take off the blinkers and have a look at the BIG picture and try seeing things from BOTH sides of the situation.
I'd assumed that you had done that yourself.

I don't agree with that either which is why I'm a Baptist.

Again, I find it very difficult to appreciate how you can make such a judgement when you haven't read, and therefor can't possibly understand, the source texts.

You've neatly avoided the core teachings by describing them as "film flam", well whilst that serves your position, it doesn't deal with my initial question which was:

are you genuinely of the opinion that the philosophical teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and Mohammad are the same?
Did you study politics, too?
