Tyre Recommendations for 400+ Club
Hi Frayz,
My car is currently being undersealed and I've been pondering getting a set of tyres for nearly 4 months!! I've told myself that when I get it back I'm buying them.
I keep thinking about the NS2Rs and have found them to be the same price as the F1 's. This will probably be the only set of tyres I buy for the car as I only do max 1000 miles per year.
I've booked it in with Zen for a cambelt kit on the 14th and then I have a novice day at Silverstone on March 21st. This is the main reason for getting the new tyres... Plus I can't predict the weather, so need to be decent if it rains.
I know you know your stuff, so will opt for the NS2R's, but what compound do I go for? Soft/medium. Mix of road and one track day.
Thanks in advance,
Dibs

i use the 180 compound daily and have found them to be nothing short of superb.
I haven't used the 120 compund yet but if these are anything to go by then if it were me I'd buy those. If the car does that little mileage then you're likely to replace them due to perishing before they wear out. Lol

So shall I go for the 120's?
Thanks
I fooking love RE070`s, Use them all year round...Lets be honest we dont need to drive like a loon in the rain anyway....i save that for the dry days but can be interesting depending on how heavy your foot is and where your wheels are pointing, Did a couple of wet laps at the ring on them too, Great stiff sidewall but as frayz said can be a bit noisy, lol.
I had those on when I bought the car.. Great in the summer.. Cooking deadly in the winter...!! But then they are a summer semi slick tyre so no surprise really
they also tram lined badly for me.

NS-2R's for me all day long
Great in the dry and in the wet, very hard wearing and cheap to boot
Used them for a couple of years now on road and track
Also on a 450bhp Hawkeye and a 550bhp classic
As Frayz said though, wait till they are scrubbed in before pushing too hard

Where's the best place to buy them? Also they are going onto standard sti WIDETRACK rims. So would 225/45/17 be fine or something else? Finally would you go for the 120 or 180 compound?
One things for sure, I'll definitely buy a set this week and post a pic up of when they arrive

If they are a daily then go 180. 120 are a softer compound more suited for track but still ok for road but with a better compound ready for when on track.
I've got the 120 on, but mine will be a weekend/track toy that I plan to push.

What size would be appropriate - 225/4517 or 225/40/17?
I'd prefer the 45 profile as I think it will lift the car higher and aid getting on/off the drive. Bad reason, but valid for me as driveway is a pain.
Hi, it's a second car and as such will not be driven daily, unless my usual car is ever off the road for what ever reason. Therefore mainly weekend use and the very, very occasional track day or club meet (e.g: CM Wales weekend).

40 for both I believe.
Both my bug and widetrack blob came with 40 profile tyres and I'm fairly certain that's standard.
One of us should check the manual it's bound to to be in there.
On the widetrack you could go for 235/40 if you wanted a bit more grip, friend had that on his and quite liked it.

Wow! Your car sounds awesome!!
Tyres seem to stand up well from the video
Did you mount your phone to the windscreen? Silverstone have stated no suction devices. Off topic: how did you get around this?
Great video by the way and excellent driving to match.

MrNoisy what tyres did you go for at the end??
If there the nankangs ns2r then there's good feedback here but not so good on the tyrereviews website. Alot of people wouldnt recommend buying again and alot say the road noise from the tyres is quite bad.
The price for whats classed as budget tyres is really good, although many would say they arent budget tyres at all and the price shouldnt be the reason.
Cheers

Placed my order for a set of 4. Will get them fitted sometime next weekend if the weather is ok to take the car out in.
Budgie, I've watched your video at least ten times now. I'm hooked on the sounds your car makes! How does it make those sounds? I.E. What have you done to it?
Mimes a JDM blob and doesn't sound anything like that. Would performing the airbox silencer delete help?
Are you free on the 21st March by any chance? If so, would you like to come to Silverstone?
Thanks,
Dibs

The tyres hold up very well in the wet conditions and are not far off 888 grip in the dry.
The camera is part of the race logic kit that I have and is permanently fixed to the A pillar.
I help run a track day club and am always looking to attend days but find Silverstone a bit on the boring side. I am doing Spa in May and hope to get to Cadwell, Oulton, Anglesey and Pembrey before the final run at Brands in December. Feel free to join us at any of them
Hi Mate, thanks and yes the car used to sound great, but it is now being stripped for parts

Way more grip than the Vredesteins or the Hankooks I had before but same price.
I also haven't noticed a difference in road noise but it's a Impreza and I don't run a quiet exhaust system
