Just to throw a female perspective into it, I think it's good when someone has a hobby/passion/something to do with their time, no matter what it is.
It's nice when someone has interests and I'd rather someone got excited about a game that sit there staring mindlessly at some total utter **** on the tv.
Life is so mundane and serious, is good to have something that you can just switch off with and enjoy for a bit.

Gotta love Mattee and Ditchies holier than thou stance.

When I was a bairn, I was never in the house unless I was eating, sleeping or sh1tting. I was always out playing football, cricket, pissing about on BMX's and all the other stuff that kids used to get up to. That's why I have so much bother with my knees now.

Couple of hours a week on GTA5 though, shouting at the Yanks. Got mates that also play it, so have a bit of banter with them, the same mates that I socialise with.

I don't bother with Call of Duty, as I'm crap at it.

I wouldn't queue overnight though. Too old for that ****!

"Spare" time consisting of watching some goons kicking a football then pretending to be a soldier on a console makes me wonder what's going on?

The Wii was interesting because it had some movement but it seems to have died off to be replaced by countless shoot em ups.

None of my mates play them. None of my family does. And have no desire to.

So there.
Well this thread went the way you thought it would, eh Matty! :

It went exactly as I thought it would.

Question something a bit geeky, have the usual geeky SN hordes indignantly defend it, geeky hordes feel they've "won," hordes move onto something else.

It couldn't be any more predictable.

Squeeze me, I wasn't giving it "Holier than thou" I just think it's responsible in part for the degradation of society, not saying everyone that plays ends up like some wierdo or mass murderer type , but these shoot em up or driving god games seem to cross over into the real world for some and generally de-sensitise the majority, after all the real world is what they are trying to emulate and turn into some sort of fantasy where everyone is a super hero or driving god.

Dare I say it but, Mary Whitehouse did have a very valid point. I don't for one moment think that the vast majority posting on this thread "need to get out more" but unfortunately I don't think that's representative of the vast majority world wide.

Of course being an adult "gamer" you're not in the slightest bit sad?

I posted because instead of the stuff we should've be talking about (computers, phones, hifi, TVs) it's all bloody video game nonsense.

Not at all.

I just find it rather amusing how you try to hide the reason for your original post (trolling) but then openly admit to it.

I still don't get it and in my social circles no one has or plays video games; I wouldn't say we're unusual.

But we all have our geek streaks; I just don't go on the attack if someone questions my nerdy elements.

You sir, are priceless.

Nobody is getting upset. But do you expect to receive positive replies when you imply that another persons hobbies are 'strange'? I admire someone who has the time to participate in many outdoor pursuits and I encourage such activities with my son.

I do agree however that some people, young and old, take gaming to the extreme and this cannot be healthy when so much of their time is devoted to such an activity.
Personally, I have always loved motorsport and spend most of the 2-3 hours a week that I spend on the console, playing F1 sim games. I just like to know how the track layout can affect racing and quite often, I can tell half a lap before, what a race driver is doing and how he is lining up a pass on the car in front. I have driven a couple of Formula Ford races in my youth (1st one, 2nd the other) as well as countless karting events. So it just satisfies my motorsport fix. I would love to do more 'real' races, but financial commitments as well as both my wife and I having full time jobs, means that any spare time that I do have at the weekends, is spent going out as a family as opposed to being selfish and spending all our spare cash on my own hobby.

Regarding your own hobbies, going out to 'parties' can be seen as an odd pastime for an adult as well as surfing, but who cares if you enjoy it and are not hurting anybody?

You mention that we 'should' be talking about mobile phones. Why? Especially when you consider that a large proportion of smart phone sales are to under 21 year olds? Why do you need the latest smart phone when a good old blackberry 8900 can act as a perfectly good device for reading emails? Because you like the apps/games/video/music streaming services that provide? How immature.

Get off your phone and go and ride a bike.

Interesting thread in my opinion - I have a bloke who works for me, he's married, in his 40s and will routinely give up sleep to game online. He has shown my photos of his 'gaming room' which is similar in layout to one of the images earlier in the thread, upscaled to home multi-screened home cinema proportions. He has invested thousands in processing hardware, as upgrading his kit seems as much of an addition as playing his games.

I have two other guys who work for me, who are heavily into amateur radio, which I considered a pointless waste of time, until I got chatting to them about it and learned about what they had achieved.

Neither of those two pass times hold any real interest for me, but those guys find me odd in that I own 5 cars when only one of them is regularly driven.

The world would be a dull place if we were all too similar or the same. Different things interest and motivate different people.

Jesus matteeboy

what I find TBH a bit pathetic is people who judge people for doing something that brings them happiness.

who cares what people do in their OWN time its THEIR time to do with as they wish.

I am 34 and play games regularly once my son is put to bed then the wife goes to bed early then the ps4 or xbox one gets plugged in for a hour or two,

people have different hobbies and interests and the world would be a boring as **** place if we all had the same hobbies and interests but not half as boring as your dumb a$$ thread.

I'm an adult (and getting on a bit now.....) and I play video games (feel like I'm standing up at an AA meeting...)

I don't consider it weird or strange, I see it as an equivalent to reading a good novel or watching a movie. It is pure escapism for my mind and it allows me to unwind and relax.

A few beers, a few mates online and a game or two.

That's about it really.......

Maybe the OP is getting at people who vegetate in front of their zombie boxes all day, glued to their phones when they're not.

I'm 31 but like you Norrie I work a lot of hours, I'm on near as dammit six days a week at the moment.

I'm not particularly a hardcore gamer but I do have a complete collection of PAL Mega CD, 32x and Sega Saturn games. I've got a Wii U and XBOX one which I play quite regularly, usually late at night in the winter months when there's nothing to do.

Good post.

I am "aiming" more at the obsessive gamers. I was also surprised at the number of posts in this section about games.

Anyway some good replies, some silly ones.

I still don't quite get it but maybe I'm slightly more enlightened.

You talk about having an N64 when you must have been early 20s. You will have experienced part of what I regard as the golden age of gaming, basically 1990-2002.

The majority of games I play these days are older games, or ones that follow the spirit of those from the past. The two games I play most at the moment are Halo : Anniversary Edition on XBOX One which is a re-release of a 13 year old game, and Super Metroid on my Wii U which is nearly 20 years old.

Unfortunately modern games are in my opinion, far too centred around the immersive experience of combined graphics and storyline which leads to the loss of the most crucial element - gameplay.

I hear that quite often.
The last game I chucked many days at was probably the Zelda one and Goldeneye.

In the older days it was Kick Off 2, Speedball 2 and a lot of time on Microprose sims.

Very true.

I started Gaming on a C64, then an Amiga, then a 486 pc for multiplayer Doom. Quake2 was the pinnacle of multiplayer gaming after that it all started getting a bit realistic, graphics over speed of play. Still play a little Q3 online (http://quakelive.com/#!home) and the odd MMORPG but that is about it now, but I do have candy crush on my phone

My least fave games are the call of duty games which whilst they have awesome realistic gfx, the gameplay is polar opposite. Games like Q2 dispensed with realism and as such were more fun, not to mention the modding community that came up with such amazing mods for the games like KoTH.

Case in point Legend of zelda ocarina of time, that had good graphics when it was released but the gameplay and replayability is awesome. Every so often I will play through it as it is really that enjoyable, you're spot on about new games being boring and not focusing on the element that grabs your attention and keeps it

Then again maybe not Richard

From what I grasp from what Matteeboy has written is he cannot understand why grown adults play video games

Hence the thread tittle " Computer games and adults "
and this Garbage quoted bellow

Have you not got anything better to do matteeboy
other than scrutanise what other people do in their spare time ??

The only thing I can see that is a waste of time is this thread !

Now be a good lad Matteeboy and jog on and go concentrate your time on something that makes yourself happy
