I bet that's what is causing the delay, it's encrypting the whole disk. Leave it overnight and I bet it'll be ok. I did see similar estimates when enabling this on Mavericks and it had done it's job overnight.
One downside to enabling this is if you reboot the machine you will have to enter your password, and it won't boot beyond that point. Not overly handy if you have to get into a remote machine that has been rebooted. If you need to install updates on a remote machine there is a terminal command to one-time disable this password requirement on boot up

File vault doesn't cause a delay, you can carry on using your machine even reboot it while it's encrypting the drive.
Probably the download.

Keep getting an 'error occurred' message and it stops downloading.
Cant open iMovie, Pages etc, as it says upgrade is in operation.
Getting mighty pi$$ed off with this now.

Well I have to say so far I'm really enjoying using a Mac and Yosemite, totally different in a lot of ways to Windows based systems but in good way.
In the end I bought a second hand late 2012 Mac Mini, not to save money but because you cannot easily expand the latest generation model.
I've got a 240GB SSD and 16GB of RAM on the way to speed up it's operation, as even though it's got a SATA drive it still takes what takes like an age to boot after being used to an SSD equipped Windows PC for quite some time.
I also like the integration between the Mac, iPad, iPhone and iCloud - don't get me wrong Android offers something similar but it's just not as polished or easy to use.
