Time for another watch thread
Based on the pricing, not as many as you think and I'm sure they'll sell by the bucket load, besides, Apple are hardly short on cash to cover the cost of "R&D".

And come on Jon, you should know that the R&D costs for a particular product affect its profitability and hence viability, irrespective fo whether Apple has the reserves to cover them or not.
What they clearly set out to produce was be a hard wearing case material comprising 75% gold which either by design (likely) or default (unlikely) has, what, half the gold content by volume and therefore has significantlty less material costs.
Very clever indeed but its not an 18ct gold watch as we know it.

Reckon I'm going for tomtom multisport , a real fitness machine.
No daft interruptions. Waterproof. And 80 quid
No bling 50 cent gold though, but it does tell the time
( I won't be out there posing with it)
If I need communications, I'll reach for my phone when I get home

Sure it is, that is in no doubt, however, the majority of the R&D will have been bought in since I doubt Apple are expert metallurgist. Of course R&D affects the bottom line, that's why Apple have conveniently designed a process that allows them to call Apple Gold 18ct despite using less gold than regular 18ct gold alloys. Like I said, I'm sure Watch will sell by the millions and the R&D will be more than covered. I admire their ability to post massive annual profits year in year out whatever products they bring out, that in itself is pure commercial gold.
Just part of the team. You should try Google Jon, it might help keep your foot out of your mouth.

And where exactly did I say Apple did not have any metallurgists? Apple started the Apple Watch project towards the end of 2011, your link shows he was brought in very soon afterwards.
Maybe it's Pot not Booze, that's one short memory.
Here's a great article that really shows the detail and craftsmanship of the Watch.

I know some were concerned about water resistance.
"*Apple Watch is splash and water resistant but not waterproof. You can, for example, wear and use Apple Watch during exercise, in the rain, and while washing your hands, but submerging Apple Watch is not recommended. Apple Watch has a water resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529. The leather bands are not water resistant."
IPX7 the X is for unknown dust ingress and Wikipedia stats the 7 as "7":Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion)."

Going for a run in the rain will not be a problem.

It was only last night I downloaded the new iOS on my i-gadgets, and the Apple watch icon has now come up on the desktop; luring me to buy it and then synching it to all other i-things. I did visit the Apple Watch website and I have to say that all the Apple watches look smart!
The best ones are as expensive as over 13,000 pounds!
I think I'll have to get a 500 quido one; just to feel like James Bond.
