It's just a matter of building up the load on the engine and allowing the piston rings to expand/contract in order to ensure that they 'bed' in properly.

Once the initial oil change has been done it will be a process of gradually putting the engine under more load as the miles accumulate.

I wish it was that easy, I have read about people who have done similar and haven't had a problem but knowing my luck I wouldn't get away with it.

From what I know there are several methods that can be used to run the engine in, there is the longer method which I have done before which was like torture for 1200-1500 miles it took to complete.

There is one method where the running in can be done in around 250 miles or less, and the method I am going down which is sort of in the middle.

Some more parts to add to the list, the Competition Clutch Stage 2 clutch kit and the Perrin short aerial have arrived.

Plus I have ordered from Alyn @ AS Performance a set of Performance Friction Z08 front brake pads, Goodridge Phantom uprated brake hoses, a set of inlet manifold phenolic gaskets/spacers and a Harvey 'trick' up pipe.

The parts list is nearly complete apart from awaiting for the TMIC, custom oil catch tank, and custom hard inlet pipe, plus before the new bumper is fitted I need to get hold of a Zunsport lower grille and a HT Autos front splitter.

The cylinder heads have been stripped down and have been sent away for testing and refacing, not really necessary given that there has been no gasket failure.

Plus all the bolts in and around the engine have been sent away to be re-zinced as they are out anyway.

Ryan has repainted the rocker covers in red crinkle and the sump pan in black to get them both looking their best.

The cylinder heads have come back from being pressure checked, refaced and having the valve seats cut in along with the valves being refitted.

The valve seats had a process called triple cutting carried out on them, instead of the normal valve seats being cut to 45* the seats are cut in three stages at 30*, 45* and 60*. This allows far better gas flow and creates a venturi effect which increases the speed of the gas plus allows more power to be created.

I'll be honest and say that it's a lot more expensive than traditional valve seat cutting, the proof will be found during the mapping but in for a penny in for a pound I suppose.

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2008...with-the-flow/

It was nice to see that the valve ports and spark plug ports are in great condition with no cracks, the cylinder head faces were as true as possible and only required the lightest of skims.

The flywheel was also refaced as well, again it only required a very light skim to bring it back to true.

Does the CHs light skim mean you can use OEM thickness head gaskets, maintaining the nominal OEM CR. Or are slightly thicker ones needed, to restore OEM CR?

Or, indeed, do you intend to actually go thinner on the HGs, thus increasing CR to gain better driveability (but map the turbo in at a slightly lower max boost, to suit)?

No I'm not intending to raise the CR, literally the cylinder heads had so little metal removed that it would make no difference at all plus the block faces are having a CDB inserts to bring them back to standard.

So standard thickness Cosworth Stopper head gaskets will be used.

I did think about increasing the CR to allow for more power but I'd prefer long term durability over the possibility of a slight performance gain.

A few pics of my bespoke TMIC being built for me by AH Fabrications, it's early days but it's looking good and it'll easily handle my projected power level.

Here are some further pics of the TMIC, the quality is looking exceptional and it will almost be a shame to fit it.

The engine will be ready by the end of this month, I am waiting then on the hose set to come back from Scoobyworx.

Once the engine is back in the bay then AH Fabrications are going to come over and make up a hard inlet pipe plus an oil catch can as well.

I am hoping to have the car running in mid March, but there are still some other jobs apart from the engine build to get out of the way before it can really be classed as finished.

Plus then there is the running in period and then taking it for a remap down at Enginetuner to take into account.

Default Bit Of A Change Of Direction

I had a sight change of direction with regards to the wheel colour.

It occurred to me that a lot of wheels are now in black, anthracite, gunmetal or other dark colour choices and that the more traditional colours such as gold or bronze are starting to look like the more discerning choice.

So I've had Ryan to paint my wheels (as they hadn't been done yet) in BMW Sepang Bronze in a high gloss finish.

The pics below do look very light when they were taken in the booth but they will look far darker under natural light.

The engine should be back by mid week from Alyn @ AS Performance so after that it'll be all ahead to get the car back on the road.

Thanks Simon, I'm not looking forward to the pounding my poor wallet is going to take but I suppose you can't take it with you.

Not quite as radical as your candy red, but I think the bronze will go well with the WR blue.

It's been built to handle 500bhp with headroom spare, the core is a motorsport designed for in engine bay use.

It has the same basic dimensions as the standard item but has a 'thicker' core meaning that it will sit closer to the bonnet scoop, as you can see it's been hand built to order.

I can find out the specific core details if I wanted them, but I gave AH Fabrications the design outline and they did the rest - they don't shout about their work unlike lots of companies out there, they let their customers spread the word about how good they are.
