P5/6 WRC budget build
They look good Ian. Are you pleased with them?
They said they were delivering to you today!
I'm picking mine up tomorrow - can't wait: fr and rear bumper and rear qtrs
All I need to do now is sort sideskirts.
I'd be interested to see how well your front wings fit to your skirts - do you think they'll mate up ok?
Cheers

No the wings need building up to line up with my side skirts , the last ones did too , do they do skirts ?
Mine have steel quarters and side sills.
The body shop says they need some work to fit in places , overall are ok , and need some finishing to be a good finish , but I expect all panels like these would

This was the first stage in Brean , was very slippy in places which kept catching me out , you think you got to grips with the conditions then it goes and bites your *** !
Did the two wings , bumper and rear quarter panel going into the bales , then kept adding to the damage as the weekend went on.
Warning , I swear a bit , ok a lot lol NSW or young ears lol
Brean 2016 stage 1 - YouTube
The guy sitting in with me has not rallied for 25 years , and then only did a bit , so to jump in at the deepend was a tall order , he was getting better the more stages he did , so fair play to him , I did study the map before going out onto the stages as I expected him to make mistakes and lose himself

Not so good the damage that was caused

Collected my panels today. Ian, Mandy confirmed they don't do side skirts - she thinks the mold went west along the way, so my quest continues!
I'll update my thread on Type RA so as not to hijack Tom's thread here.

HI Iain
I spoke to him last night and he can do you steel sills , but to get them to line up properly the only way he can do it is to make them on the car , so you would need to fit the quarters and wings , and he needs the car for three days to make and fit them , he said it would be £130 a side.
TBH with the variation in wings , you may struggle to find sills that will fit straight on , as these wings don't fit my sills , and the wings were molded off genuine steel wings , and all my panels are genuine.
Give these a try as well , can't see them listed but you never know

Wow that's a bargain Ian, many thanks for following that up
Even with transport costs (assume he's down your neck of the woods?) it will be worth while to ensure the skirts match the wing.
All I need to do is fit my wings!
I understand where you're at with your panels matching up/lining up etc. When you consider the amount of panel beating that would have gone on building the original cars, I'm sure all of them would have turned out fractionally different. By the time you get this far down the line with composite moulds it's not hard to imagine some variation creeping into the equation.
I know Jamie over in Ireland has covered similar territory to get his panels fitted well and lined up.
Rally tech are up my neck of the woods, near my Brother in Law in fact, so I've already been in touch with them regarding some smaller bits and bobs like roof vent and so on. I planned to ask them about side skirts too. I have to say though the metal option appeals on many levels (fit, structural integrity for starters).
Thanks again
Iain

Then I saw on Facebook they were going to start, with pictures of a kit being lined up and an advert for the car being for sale once it was finished. A lot of people responded, whether anyone actually went beyond just an enquiry I'm not sure.
Then, a few months later I saw a few people asking if there was any update, as did I and as far as I'm aware there was never a response.
Weird this. I first pm'd Darren on here several years ago about doing a WRC kit and he said they were looking into it. I replied to the same message a year or so later to see if there was any progress and didn't get a reply.

I'm tempted but won't be for a while yet. Would also need to find a garage confident enough to paint/fit it.
I have swapped e-mails and had some pics from Darren also in recent months before I started mine.
From what I have seen so far, it seems to be 22B kit with higher arches.
To the lay person, that might be what they think the WRC kit is, but it is different in virtually every panel.
There are many 22B shaped clues that (to date at least) remain in the panels in the pics that I have seen, and Darren has supplied. The front and rear bumper look like 22B not WRC for example. The way the front wings are rear qtr panel fit to the sills end up looking quite different etc.
If an accurate looking kit is your thing, you may need to look elsewhere.
It's still got the makings of a good looking kit however, and I don't wish to sound negative. My feeling with ABW is that they produce good quality stuff (much better than most GRP mfrs) that fits well without much messing about, which will certainly appeal to many. The shame is it wouldn't take too much for them to really get it spot on either.
Cheers

i'm moving to France at the end of march so you'd need to be quick!

You're off to France? Blimey!
They look nice in steel Tom, and I really appreciate the offer
The only thing is the WRC are quite a funky shape and change a fair bit along their length.
Here's the shape of my rear panel at the leading edge of the sill (looks like similar to yours above)

But contrast that with the shape at the trailing edge of the front wing where they mate up, which is quite square-ish...

Are yours definitely the same profile all the way along? As Ian G highlighted before the sills to wings profile is quite a fluid landscape on the S5's!
Cheers

Yea, i've been screwed over too many times in this country, time for a fresh start
Hopefully i'll be at full pace by July, so until then it's a case of sorting stuff and trying to prepare.
I got them off the guy that made my rear q's
that 'proper' sill does look a bit square ish at the front

Thanks for posting up additional pics Tom.
Your sills definitely need to be more square section nearer the front; but neither are they 22B shaped!
The square section of the OCT wings where they meet the sills would appear to be a fairly accurate replica, so maybe a bit of work needed on your sills? At least on the plus side you know you've got a good fit at the other end!

no worries
they do indeed, you can kind of see that the front of the sill isnt quite round, but it's about 20mm off matching the front wing in the worst place
i'm not going to mod the sill's until i'm happy i've got a good pair of wings to match to, i'm not sure how your wings turned out but the more I look at mine the more I wish i'd just sent them back

That's a shame.
Chuffed to bits with my front wings.
Got a pretty decent fit and sanded down nicely. Think you might have been better off with gel coat versions perhaps?
I know Jamie has fit issues with his sills to front wings (WRC spares) and that's with everything from the same supplier! I think he might end up going for OCT wings as well, so just goes to show how tricky getting a good fit is.
In fact Jamie had the idea that it would be possible to use your OEM wings as a frame to fit composite wings to.. You could re-use your original wings at the bonnet rail, fr indicator recess, and up to the windscreen pillar and down the door shut and by cutting a similar section out of your composite wings overlay and bond them to the frame you've left behind.
You'd get great fitment and shut lines this way and retain virtually all OEM fixings...
Although mine fit ok, the more I think about this method the more it appeals. I would even consider doing this and using the result as a plug for a new mould..

The original WRC steel wings are made from the top part of standard wings , and welded together , mine are like this , the ones I damaged in my off in Jersey , the guy who makes the wings say mine can be salvaged , as its the front around the light that got damaged , so he will use another wing top to repair it
As Ian says that is how the original panels were made (rear q's too although all done on the car), great idea and like you say has many benefits.
For me it's way too much messing around, I can handle laying up a few wings, but metal shaping, cutting, welding, fettling etc is too much work for wings that are so prone to damage, but I appreciate all our cars get used differently and we're all on different budgets

I finally got hold of a bonnet yesterday so they can get on fitting the front end on now , they wanted all the panels to do it right , the quarter panel , and door is finished and primed , i'll go tomorrow and see how they're getting on and take some pics.
They are also face lifting my T5 van next week , so i'm keeping them busy lol
Not sure if I will be back out in it , or time to sell
