New STi on PistonHeads
Good point
Given the issues of the past
What quality are the internals like?
And how good is the factory map?
Have they learnt their lesson...only time will tell perhaps!
Although the 2.5 block is fundamentaly a weaker thing than a 2.0, more has been machined out of it in effect.
I guess it is still the old school SCD 2.5 block?
It will be interesting to see the specification of the engine in this and interesting to see someone pull one apart at some point.

Perhaps that has been addressed, who knows.
What drugs you on?
Most people can't even drive to the potential that 100bhp can be fully exploited. 300bhp is way more than enough for road use.
Just to put this into perspective.... I did a track day @ Cadwell in my mates 2008 hatch sti in November last year, with some other Scooby boys. We had the lowest powered Subaru there, which at full chat in super sports mode (or whatever it is called) was 330bhp. I told my mate we would use intelligent mode (which is probably, on his map, 280bhp). Most of the drivers, including 400bhp classics, couldn't keep up with me all day around that circuit (which was in the wet I hasten to add). My mate suddenly realised it wasn't power he needed..... it was driver training.
My mates car is "quick enough" and fun to drive.
My biggest issue with the new one is that they're still using that piece of **** 2.5...... which whilst that continues, will NEVER see me back in a new Subaru. Trust me, I want to be back in a new one.

I consider myself to be a decent driver (did some rallying for almost 5 years(including gp N) until the money ran dry
)300bhp less transmission loss means a lot of hot hatches are much quicker in the real world though
Then we have reliability - but lets not go there

I'm not exactly from fast and the furious, I'm just stating the obvious that it's going to be a quite a pointless car, anyone who gives it stick in the a-b roads will be gutted when the 2k clio passes them. If clocking up miles on motorway is your thing go ahead and order one,
Your £2k Clio or RWD BM will be fooked on anything but a smooth road.
It's also a bit away from the norm, vanilla repmobiles owned by many. It's not image over function or badge/pub snobbery.

Let's just say for the sake of it that the 2.5 has had all it faults seen to and is now more reliable then even the 2.0 would that not make it better?.I have only driven the 2.0 but hear the 2.5 makes for a better road car.It has more power low down and is very progressive through the revs so I hear.I am sure you will all tell me I am wrong but dreamers will dream.

Read the TG Subaru/BMW test, a much better comparison and the Scoob comes out on top due to the AWD. They also say it's not an M Way car but a ballistic B road blaster and was pulling away from the BM on anything less than perfect.

A 2.5ltr engine is cool - A Subaru Impreza 2.5ltr breaks so is not cool.
If they give me a 2.5ltr engine that is reliable - then yes - I would take that over the 2ltr.

Don't knock? that's the only thing they are good at doing lol.
I'm not really getting this? Do you mean classic as in it came factory fitted to classics, which it wasn't. Or do you mean it's a classic engine as in a good one? which again it isn't. the 2.5 was a proper bag of hammers and nails have you any idea how many of those things have completely shat themselfs newly out of the dealers with very little use.

Two rebuilds in under 40k miles - awesome, NOT.

The STI doesn't have to be the quickest in its class. It's plenty quick enough as it is, and that's the reality.
You being a "driver" should appreciate what you can extract out of the STI, and fully understand that goes far beyond what we can, in reality, use on our roads.
Just seen Shaun's post as well, agreed. That's pretty much what I was saying earlier but apparently beating hot hatches is super important

Listen, beating other cars is not really the point, and to be honest, I couldn't car less.
The point I make is that Subaru 'used' to be well ahead of the opposition, and now they're not.
They also subject us to 'dodgy' engines - but that's a whole different matter

In effect the WRX STI is now back where it started; it's ugly, expensive to run, feels cheap inside compared with other cars at the same price and most mainstream buyers don't get it. And on the right road, in the right conditions, goes like nothing else.
Whenever someone mentions comparing a BMW to a Subaru I have a mental picture in my head of the cars abandoned at the bottom of Handcross hill on the A23 during the snow a couple of years ago.
If Subaru had made this model with 400BHP as standard then the mpg figures would be laughable, and the very small amount of potential buyers it has now would be even smaller. Subaru also know that 95% of it's owners modify their cars, and that companys will already be looking at making modified parts to bolt to this.
